1 The National Lottery Community Fund: Great Ideas

Great Ideas is designed to support great ideas that don’t necessarily involve people at every stage but if implemented would contribute to putting people in the lead.
Funding size: £10,000 to £500,000

We believe that working with people at every stage of the process helps communities to thrive.

However, we have learned that this approach sometimes leaves gaps for great ideas which don’t necessarily involve people at every stage of their development, but if implemented would contribute to putting people in the lead.

So we have developed Great Ideas to support projects like this. Projects that we could support under Great Ideas might include activity like testing digital approaches, developing user led approaches or developing community decision making.

If you think it might be for you, talk to the funding team in your local area, give us a call on 028 90551455 or email us at
enquiries.ni@tnlcommunityfund.org.uk

 7  Brexit Survey for RCN

Please take 5 minutes to complete this short survey on Brexit and how it may affect your rural community and/or organisation by Friday 26 July.

Rural Community Network is increasingly being asked to attend meetings and speak on some of the issues that may impact on rural communities post-Brexit. To date the focus of much of our engagement has been concerned with shaping and influencing future rural development policy, funding and service delivery. We would like to ensure that our views continue to be informed by our members.

We are conscious that there are a range of views on Brexit and the potential impacts amongst our diverse membership. However the imminent resignation of the Prime Minister means the current Draft Withdrawal Agreement is unlikely to be brought back to Parliament. A new Prime Minister may try to renegotiate the Withdrawal Agreement but the EU insists that the negotiations will not be re-opened. There is currently no mechanism by which the UK Parliament can prevent a No Deal Brexit although a new Prime Minister may seek a further extension to the negotiation period. In these circumstances the potential of a No Deal Brexit has increased significantly.

11 Football V Homophobia

Football v Homophobia is back again for its fifth year for Foyle Pride Festival 2019! Foyle Pride Festival will be marking 50 years from the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, the birth of Pride and are as determined as ever to strive towards equal rights for the LGBTQ+ community here and throughout the world. With Football V Homophobia, we aim to celebrate the equality and diversity of LGBTQ+ people in sport whilst challenging the homophobia, biphobia and transphobia and invisibility of LGBTQ+ people that currently exists in football.

Football v Homophobia will take place in The Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium, Derry City and Institute Football Club's home stadium. We are delighted that our local football team's home ground is able to host this tournament as it has grown year on year.  The tournament will take place on Monday 19th August from 5pm to 9pm.

The tournament is open to all genders and players over 16, with no upper age limit. The tournament will be split into 2 categories, 'The Rainbow Shield' for teams and players who have never played before or have limited football experience and who just want to play for fun, and 'The Rainbow Cup' for the more serious football players. Entry fee per team is £25. Alternatively you can register as an individual to play in the tournament for £5 and you will be assigned a team before the event. It has been great fun in recent years to have the involvement of our local political representatives. Alternatively if you can't play you can put up a message of support on you social media platforms supporting the initiative or if you have other ideas on how to support.

Everyone who participates will get a pair of Rainbow laces and there will be special prizes for the 'Player of the Tournament', 'Rainbow Boot', and 'Spirit of the Tournament'.

16 She Wants to be a What?

Single mother Gwen sees herself as an open-minded, liberal feminist. With her lifelong friend Maggie, she’s actively involved in a steady succession of protests aimed at putting the world to rights. Then, shortly before her fiftieth birthday, one seismic event throws her life into disarray, making her question her perception of herself.

Sole Purpose Productions is delighted to present this play as part of the 50 Years since Stonewall celebrations in association with the Foyle Pride Festival and Greater Shantallow Community Arts.

Performed by a local cast and directed by Patricia Byrne, Berni Kerr’s new drama explores the journey of a transgender man from a mother’s perspective. It charts with empathy, incisiveness and dark humour the impact on their friends and family circle, and the support that is available.  Writer Berni Kerr commented, “Understanding of the impact of gender transition on family members is not widely discussed and the importance of support cannot be stressed enough. The mother’s experiences of inpatient psychiatric care are explored as she struggles to be heard by carers who, though they care deeply, simply do not know what to say.  Hopefully this play will open up discussion around these matters.”

Sole Purpose held a Rehearsed Reading of the play last year where it received very positive responses. Audience member, Eamonn Baker in Community Development at Holywell Trust, said,“Berni Kerr’s intimate, compassionate and sometimes comic script gives voice both to the family tensions arising and to the loving family response that ultimately wins the day in this transgender story”

The local, dedicated and talented cast includes: Caitriona Cunningham, Maureen Wilkinson, Joseph O’Hagan, Paul O’Doherty, Roma Harvey,  Felicity McCall and Anita Jackson.

An award winning theatre company that has toured extensively in Ireland, the UK and USA, Sole Purpose Productions is core funded by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. This production is supported by Derry City and Strabane District Council Good Relations Programme.

Noirin McKinney, Director of Arts Development, Arts Council of Northern Ireland said, “The award-winning Sole Purpose has established a reputation for excellence in using the arts to produce powerful, moving theatre that shines a light on and encourages discussion around challenging social issues.  The Arts Council of Northern Ireland is delighted to support Sole Purpose and would encourage everyone to go along to this latest production.”
