2 The New Needs Fund

Fund objectives:

  • To help organisations and communities to respond better, addressing new needs appearing as a result of the Coronavirus and where restrictions mean finding new ways of meeting existing needs.
  • To help organisations and communities to #build back better, helping to ensure organisations can thrive and continue to provide longer-term support to communities

The funding is primarily to support communities, and as a result we would expect to see communities, and communities of interest taking action, and to prepare to implement solutions that will work in their areas.

With grant sizes of between £3,000 to £15,000, it is the expectation that this funding will support organisations to continue to provide services over the next 6 to 7 months.  Projects must be complete by the end of February 2021, with end of grant reports completed by Friday 12th March 2021.

Grant size: £3,000 to £15,000 - Projects must be complete by the end of February 2021, with end of grant reports completed by Friday 12th March 2021.

Priorities:
Initiatives that empower and connect community based organisations; Initiatives that have a clear social impact; Initiatives that involve those with lived experience; Organisations who have fewer live grants, ie: less than four live grants, at any one time. Organisations who have received financial support from the Coronavirus Community Fund are eligible to apply for this funding providing the request is for a new project in line with the New Needs Fund criteria.

The Fund will close for applications on Friday 28th August 2020 but will be assessed on a rolling call basis.  We anticipate significant demand and so we may have to close the fund for applications sooner than planned.  Groups are therefore encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

7 Charitable Status in Northern Ireland

In light of the Court of Appeal ruling of February 2020, please find below some information which may be of assistance:

https://www.charitycommissionni.org.uk/news/legal-update/

This states that all charities registered before May 2019 are no longer registered charities and those decisions are now void.

If your organisation is affected by this – it does not mean you are not a charity.  You are still a charity in law, that does not require CCNI approval.  I know for many this will seem very confusing but I want to assure you it should not have any detrimental effect on your day to day activities.
NICVA has made further comment
here

Seamus McAleavey, Chief Executive of NICVA  have been in contact with the Department for Communities and is assured that the DfC has interim arrangements in place and will bring forward legislation to amend the legislation as soon as possible.

20 Void and artist Alan Phelan are looking for your help!

Void recently announced the recipients of the Plinth commission, 2020/21. The first commission by Alan Phelan will launch in September 2020. The RGB Hyacinth Bucket Challenge Sculpture COVID19 Memorial (working title) is a crowd-sourced sculpture made by individual participants in isolation, then assembled together to create the final artwork. The sculpture will be of a hyacinth flower with petals made in papier-mâche. For this sculpture the ‘small flowers’ of the hyacinth are enlarged to the size of a bucket - 2 lightweight domestic buckets are used to make the mould for the flower which is layered with paper to make strong papier-mâché. Each flower is made by one person, at home and then returned to Void. The flowers will be assembled by the Void team onto a support structure on site at the Walker Plinth and an opening celebration will take place on the 5 September. After the exhibition is over, the bucket flower can be collected by each maker and used to make a fruit bowl or wall decoration.

No massive art making experience is needed - all the instructions will be provided and a video will be available on Void's vimeo site which follows the same guide. All materials are supplied by Void with only a few extra things needed which should be around the house.

Materials will be ready for collection on July 20th. Flowers must be returned by the 10th of August. In order to adhere to social distancing, please email Maeve at engage@derryvoid.com to arrange a collection time.
