  • Data Protection reform: Introduction to GDPR

Monday 12 March 2018
11am-1pm
The Junction, DiverseCity Community Partnership, Bishop St.

Have you heard about the reform to data protection law, which takes effect in 25 May 2018? Are you wondering what this means and how it might impact upon your organisation? Innovations in digital and communications technology have revolutionised the way in which data and information is created, stored, processed and shared.

The General Data Protection Regulation will build on the current data protection framework by providing more protections for consumers, and more privacy considerations for organisations. In this awareness raising session, NICVA staff will explore the key aspects of the GDPR in the format of what’s new, and what stays the same. Discover what your organisation can do to prepare for these changes through the impartation of information and group discussion.

This session is aimed at organisations who are at the initial stages of tackling GDPR.

**Please note places are filling up very fast on this seminar**

  • Raising the Standards of Fundraising in NI Workshop - Derry/Londonderry

Monday 26 March 2018

2:00-4:00pm
Holywell DiverseCity Community Partnership

This free workshop facilitated by the Institute of Fundraising Northern Ireland and funded by the Halifax Foundation for NI will inform and educate on fundraising codes of best practice and self-regulation for any charity involved in fundraising.

The purpose of this project is to develop best practice standards and compliance with self-regulation in fundraising across the charity sector in Northern Ireland. This workshop will provide guidance and support to charities to understand implications of fundraising self regulation and grow best practice with trustees, staff and volunteers and essentially those who benefit from charity services such as supporters, donors and funders of charities.

Funded by the Halifax Foundation for Northern Ireland this is the first in a series of 6 workshops across Northern Ireland and offers charities the opportunity to understand the requirements for Fundraising Code compliance with regards to self-regulation of fundraising activity.

Speaking about the project, Chairperson of IOF NI, Neil Irwin said

"This is a great opportunity for charities right across Northern Ireland to raise their awareness in fundraising and regulation. Any groups involved in fundraising will become more aware of their responsibilities as regards fundraising and the requirements of the new funding regulations."

The workshop will use the Good Practice in Fundraising Guide (Northern Ireland) to support the development of self‐regulation in line with developing policy and practice in the rest of the UK"

Participants from all charities across Northern Ireland will get the chance to learn about developing their fundraising best practice and compliance with legal obligations as well as benefitting from being more aware of the legal and reputational risks to fundraising practice and understand better their responsibilities.

Numbers are limited for this event so early booking is advisable: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/raising-the-standards-of-fundraising-in-n-ireland-workshop-derrylondonderry-tickets-43161521272

rfletcher@brysongroup.org by 2nd March 2018

A Partnership Project: Bryson Intercultural and TIDES Training Consultancy

Funded by the European Union’s PEACE IV Programme Managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB)

We are excited to launch our Dialogues About Race and Ethnicity (DARE). We chose the new Flagship Home of Northern Ireland Football, as it is an example of how community perceptions can be positively challenged and changed.

Our ambition is to promote peace and reconciliation in Northern Ireland and the Six Border Counties by engaging different cultural, ethnic and religious communities in a sustained and meaningful dialogue that will change our shared knowledge and perceptions of each other.

The Project will equip, through training and mentoring individuals to become Black & Minority Ethnic Champions. They will work alongside Community Hosts, who will also have undertaken our training. Together they will DARE to lead different intercommunity conversations on a large, medium and small scale.

The success of this project relies on the collaboration and participation of diverse communities, the voluntary sector, public bodies, elected representatives and most notably our ability to create new interest within the general public of NI and the border counties.

To accommodate numbers and catering would you kindly RSVP by 2nd March 2018 to:

16  Lives in Translation

Lives in Translation celebrates the human survival instinct through the story of one woman, Asha, who in fleeing the conflict of her home becomes trapped in a different struggle. She is trapped within the suffocating bureaucracy surrounding asylum seeking.

Based on interviews with female Somali asylum seekers and local support workers, this poignant drama explores how asylum seekers are forced to navigate support systems through translation. It highlights how disempowering and frustrating this system can be, and ultimately how time is controlled most by those it affects least.

The performance follows a ten-year journey through Mogadishu, Dublin, Belfast and London, as one woman fights for a life free from constant fear and a place to make home.

Suitable for 15 years and older.
“This simple but powerful drama explores the asylum industry, where the future is determined by

interpreters, and hope is dashed in transit” – Belfast Telegraph

“Lives in Translation is sharp and an international look at the appalling situation of those asylum seeking” – Irish News

17  Free Film Showing in Derry -- "Fukushima: A Nuclear Story”

(Directed by Matteo Gagliardi, 2015, 84mnts, English)

Sunday 11th March 2018 - 14:00 - Holywell DCCP, Bishop St, Derry
 Admission - free.

Fukushima Trilogy—It's not over yet
Almost 7 years have passed since the explosions of three reactors in Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. At the time of the accident, it was reported worldwide, but there has been little recent discussion of the event in the media, even though more than 70,000 people are still displaced as a result. We’ll take a look back at what actually happened at that time, and whether or not anything has changed in the meantime, by watching a total of 3 documentary films. This is not a project only about past. This project is not only about the past. This is an issue we are now facing as the UK government has just approved a plan for a major new nuclear power station in Wales.  Are nuclear power plants safe? How much do we really know about them? Do we know anything about their operation, maintenance and safety?

(synopsis)
Pio, the Italian Sky reporter, was in Tokyo on the day of the earthquake and decided to leave immediately to get to the area affected by the tsunami: “Fukushima: A Nuclear Story” offers a completely original point of view on the tragedy. Pio refused to abandon his job even though the nuclear danger was at its greatest and searched desperately for the truth regarding what really happened inside the Fukushima Daiichi plant. The former prime minister of Japan, Naoto Kan revealed how Tokyo, and probably the whole of Japan, avoided a much bigger tragedy thanks to sheer luck. It was the presence of a broken valve that actually saved Japan.

Our two other film showings on Fukushima, with talks and Q&A with the directors. are:-
A2-B-C (2013, Director Ian Thomas Ash ) -- 1st July 2018 Holywell DCCP
Little Voices from Fukushima (2015, Director Hitomi Kamanaka) -- 7th October (Sun) 2018
