2 The Big Sky programme

BBC Children in Need is here to make sure that every child has the childhood they deserve and the support they need to thrive.

Our A Million & Me fund supports children aged 8-13 years old. It focuses on their emotional wellbeing and mental health.

This fund aims to provide support at an early stage, before mental health problems are established.

  • This is an invite only programme for organisations working in rural, remote and island areas.
  • As applications are by invitation only, they will be developed through conversations with BBC Children in Need teams in each of the 4 nations and draws on our local knowledge and insight.
Contact details for local teams are here

 Edge Fund

Edge Fund is a grantmaking body with a difference: we support efforts to achieve social, economic and environmental justice, and to end imbalances of wealth and power.

We fund work that challenges abuses of power and aims to bring an end to systems that cause injustice.

We are passionate believers in 'participatory grantmaking', where the funder and the funded work together to decide where the money goes.

What we fund

  • Work with the primary objective of creating long-term change in society by addressing the causes of injustice and inequality.
  • We focus on groups addressing issues that face a particular community that are led by that community (e.g. a group working on issues around sex work should be led by people with direct lived experience of sex work).
  • We prioritise groups that struggle to get funding elsewhere, particularly if other funders might consider them to be "too radical".

This funding is open to whole island of Ireland

The funding round will close at 23:59 on the 31st of October.

4 Community Garden Grants

The grants provide funding for amateur gardeners from community groups to create or complete a garden or similar project (such as an allotment) that has a horticultural focus for the benefit of the local community or charitable group. The aim should be to bring a community together by creating or developing a space that people can share, by the acquisition and sharing of gardening knowledge and skills, and by inspiring a love of gardening.

Individual grants are between minimum £1000 and maximum £5000. Eligible costs could include, for example, site preparation (including hire of small mechanical tools such as rotavators), hand tools, plants, trees, shrubs, containers and seating.

The National Garden Scheme is committed to sustainability in gardening so it is important that your proposal demonstrates that you will be using sustainable gardening methods – for instance being as far as possible peat-free. We also celebrate biodiversity so demonstrating that your project will encourage biodiversity and wildlife, while not essential, will be a positive.

Fund closes at 12 noon on 13th November 2023

9  Independent Review of progress on implementation of the Racial Equality Strategy

The Executive Office (TEO) has committed to commission an independent review of progress on the implementation of the Racial Equality Strategy 2015-2025.
You can access the Racial Equality Strategy 2015-2025
here.

I (Sabir Zazai) was very interested to be asked by TEO to undertake this independent review of progress on the Racial Equality Strategy and to produce recommendations that will help inform the implementation of this Strategy. The strategy was launched in 2015 and since then a lot has changed that may have influenced or hindered in progressing some of the ambitions of the Strategy. This review is an opportunity to collate the input and views of a cross spectrum of stakeholders to help identify gaps and inform future approaches of the Strategy.

We are very keen to hear from you about your views on both the aims and the delivery of the Racial Equality Strategy 2015-2025 and to give you different ways to engage with us on our review.

We are coming to Belfast on Monday 30th October, Tuesday 31st October, and Wednesday 1st November, for a series of face-to-face meetings held at NICVA, in addition to having online consultations held on MS Teams on 23rd - 24th October and 2nd - 3rd November.

If you would like to meet with us, then do please book a slot in our schedule as outlined in Annex B in the
attached document.

11 Black History Summit

The North West Migrants’ Forum presents its third annual Black History Summit at our Derry~Londonderry campus on Saturday 21 October, 10am to 1.30pm, Great Hall, Derry ~ Londonderry Campus

October is Black History Month in the UK and is a time in which we celebrate and highlight the contributions black people have made in shaping the world we live in today.

The theme for Black History Month is 'Dig Deeper, Look Closer, Think Bigger’.

The North West Migrant Forum will be examining the importance of an inclusive curriculum: Exploring how black history can be taught in schools and embedded across the curriculum. They want to discuss how our view of the world shapes education and why we need to take a broader view of history and culture in NI.

Black history is not just for October, but all year around. How might this look like in practice? We invite everyone- educators, students, parents, members of the public - to come along and allow themselves to be inspired by our fantastic line-up of speakers.

This is a free event and lunch will be provided.

13 Carers Dementia Education for Nov 23 and Monthly Carers Drop In

Carers EducationThursdays 9th – 30th November at 11am @ Hillcrest Trust/Trench Road
FREE 4-week Course for those looking after someone with dementia at home but does not exclude those whose loved ones are in care homes as the understanding and communication etc is still needed for them to advocate and support their loved ones.  This course teaches what is dementia and helps carers to gain an understanding about different types of dementia, their signs and symptoms, about communication, different behaviours and coping strategies etc. It is taught weekly with time for carers to talk and make connections as well as learning together. We do encourage family members to come on together and share the learning, so places are open for several members of the same family to come onto the programme at the same time and share the learning.

Carers Monthly Drop In is hosted in OLT and alternates between day and evening sessions. This is a drop-in service for carers to meet and talk over a cuppa and we also host guest speakers as well.

22 Paint Swap Scheme

From Thursday 5th October, there will be a householder paint drop-off and collection points at Council’s three main recycling centres allowing residents to donate leftover paint and collect reusable paint for free helping bring household DIY and community projects to life.

When you drop paint off at Pennyburn, Strathfoyle or Strahans Road recycling centres, staff will check whether the paint is in a good enough condition to be reused. If it passes this test, it will be placed into the onsite Community RePaint paint collection areas of these centres where residents and local community groups can then collect the paint, free of charge, for DIY jobs and use in local projects.

Passing on your leftover paint for reuse and/or collecting FREE paint for your upcoming projects is a great way to prevent this usable paint from going to waste.

Before collecting any paint, residents will be required to sign a disclaimer and provide some personal details. This is to keep a record of where the paint is going, and to ensure we comply with our legal reporting requirements. Once you get home, if you are not happy with the quality of the paint you have collected, please bring it back to the centre for recycling.

Find out more about the Community RePaint Network.
