19 1:1 - sound performance by Belinda Quirke

Finissage event for Isabel Nolan's exhibition flotsam, jetsam, lagan and derelict
Belinda Quirke - sound performance

Saturday 18 February, 6pm

Visitors are invited to listen during this performance by artist Belinda Quirke. Quirke has made a sonic piece inspired by the exhibition at Void by Isabel Nolan.

1:1

I explore the universal geometric foundation, and nature of sound through experimentation with electronic sound materials. Every vibrating object emits a sound, a magnetic wave that travels, resonates, reflects, and is often absorbed by other bodies. The space between, how we listen, where we listen, and what we hear, is ultimately individually experiential, and species dependent.

The Greek mathematician, philosopher, and cult leader, Pythagoras’(ca. 570 to ca. 490 BCE) calculation of ratios on an ancient monochord and geometric form, exist in both in the natural and synthetic worlds. The geometric interpretation of those same mathematic principles are relayed in the triangular, ten point form of the Tectractys, and the Pythagorean theory of Musica Mundana, in which each planet creates an inaudible sound in a perfectly ordered heavenly scale. Manipulated voice, vintage Juno 6 Synthesiser and stylophone. combine palindromic medieval systems and inverted Tectractys structures in construction.
