Our grants are open to not for profit, constituted groups to deliver a wide range of activities and projects that benefit the city and district.

2 The Wesleyan Foundation Large Grants

Fund Aims
Grants will be considered from charities, constituted voluntary and community groups that focus on:

  • Education - Charities or projects that enhance learning and develop career opportunities
  • Health – Promote health and wellbeing.
  • Social – Provide local solutions to meet local needs, promote community cohesion and develop sustainable and supportive communities.

Available Funding: Grants are available between £2,000 - £10,000 and must be spent within a year.
Priority Area: Grants are available across the whole of Northern Ireland.

We Will Fund

  • Groups that have been running for at least 2 years.
  • Salary, equipment or volunteer costs that are clearly budgeted and only used for the project – evidence will be required.

Grants can be made for a wide range of purposes.
For example:

  • Start-up costs for new organisations or projects
  • Extension and development of existing projects
  • Pilot projects (to gather research and evidence)
  • The purchase of equipment and resources

The Wesleyan Foundation is in favour of funding:

  • Homework clubs / Education and upskilling
  • Employability – supporting people to move towards employment
  • Mental wellbeing – but not via arts and crafts groups – more direct working, e.g. counselling

Please note:

  • Grants can be made for a wide range of purposes including consumables, project or activity costs.
  • No more than 10% of the project costs can be assigned to operational/core costs.
  • Your application value must be no more than 20% of the organisation’s annual income.
  • Your organisation's income level must be less than £500,000, as shown in your most recent annual accounts.

You can apply to this fund if you are one of the following:

  • Registered charities
  • Constituted Community groups
  • Companies Limited by Guarantee with charitable aims
  • Community Interest Companies
  • Co-operatives - registered Community Benefit Societies and registered Industrial and Provident Societies

 Kinship Care NI's £10,000 Crowdfunding Event

24th July 2019, 6.00pm to 7.30pm, Holywell Trust, Bishop Street

During this event we hope to raise £10,000 to run programmes and activities for 362 children and young people who haven’t had the easiest start to life.   

Crowd Funding involves bringing together a load of amazing people (people just like you) who care about the issue of kinship care as much as we do.  We give a short presentation on the work of Kinship Care NI and you offer to support us by pledging a few pound.  The money you pledge does not have to be in any way substantial, although I must tell you that we would love to achieve our target of £10,000.  Depending on the size of your donation you will receive a certificate of recognition, a storybook, a feelings chart and the biggest THANK YOU in the world.  

Within our Kinship Care Support Service situated at 67 Carlisle Road we provide advice, information and support to 362 children and young people.  Some of the children we support have experienced the death of their parents.  Other children are coming to terms with their earlier life experiences, including abuse and neglect.  Our job (and now your job) is to build their confidence, resilience and self-esteem so they can grow up and achieve wonderful things for themselves, their families and their communities.  We need your support to do this.

Every year we spend around £85,000 delivering programmes and activities to kinship carers and their children.  We also spend £60,000 buying beds, school uniforms and everything else youngsters need when they come to live with a member of their extended family in an emergency.  We can’t bring their mum or dad back, but we can do our best to alleviate the hardship carers experience when they take on the full time care of children who often arrive with the clothes on their back.

Kirsty, age 7
Kirsty has been in the care of her granny, Fiona aged 63 for the last 10 months.  Prior to this Kirsty was living with her mum.  Kirsty’s mum died and she went to live with her granny.

Kirsty is a beautiful and very funny little girl.  She enjoys horse riding and going with her granny to the park.  Kirsty presents as a confident girl but behind this brave exterior is a terrified little girl who is grieving the loss of her mum and worried beyond belief about what will happen to her and who will take care of her if her granny dies.

Kirsty receives one to one support at our Centre at 67 Carlisle Road, L’Derry.  She has completed a 4 week Personal Development Programme and a 3 week Circus Skills Programme.  

Kirsty has lost everything that was once familiar to her – her mum, her home as well as having to start a new school and try and having to make new friends. 10 months on and Kirsty is doing ok.  She knows her mum is not coming back but wants to make her proud of her.   Kirsty says she wants to be a Vet when she grows up.

Our Crowd Funding event will take place on Wednesday 24th July 2019 at the Holywell Trust, Bishop Street, L’Derry, BT48 6PW from 6.00pm to 7.30pm.   

The MC for the evening will be Dale Thomas (apparently Ireland’s Answer to Paul McKenna) and there will be beautiful music by two young people William and Caitlin.  Refreshments, including supper will also be provided.

4 Hidden Hearing Hidden Hero Awards

It is our pleasure to invite your charity to get involved in this year’s Hidden Hearing Hidden Hero Awards. Every charity that nominates someone will be in with the chance of winning a £2,000 donation at a special celebration lunch in the 5 Star Intercontinental Hotel Dublin on September 9.

The Awards have been ongoing since 2011 and previous recipients of the Charity Hero Award include Debra Ireland and Crumlin Children’s Hospital.

 7  Designated Child Protection Officer Training

The training will be delivered by CiNI, Children in Northern Ireland and here are course details: 

This course will enable you to become familiar with the role and responsibilities of the Designated Child Protection Officer and develop competence and confidence in carrying out this role. 

Those who have operational responsibility for receiving concerns about the safety and welfare of children and young people, and who make decisions about what action needs to be taken, will find this course invaluable. 

This workshop will: 

  • Develop understanding of the role and responsibilities of a DCPO. 
  • Increase understanding of the structure and functions of statutory bodies. 
  • Develop awareness of the complexities of the DCPO role and strategies to deal with them. 
  • Improve understanding of forms of abuse (physical, emotional, neglect, sexual and exploitation) and risk and vulnerability factors. 
  • Improve understanding of the complex concepts of need, harm, and significant harm. 
  • Increase awareness of the legal and rights context underpinning the DCPO role. 
  • Improve understanding of the Threshold of Needs Matrix. 
  • Develop understanding of key safeguarding issues from case reviews and research. 
  • Relate roles and responsibilities to organisation policy and procedures. 
  • Increase awareness of the challenges of managing confidentiality, information sharing and data protection. 
  • Develop and improve decision making skills. 
  • Develop competence in recording and information sharing. 
  • Explore good practice in use of UNOCINI.

8 Parent/Teen Communication Training - Level 2

The Course

This 2-day workshop will be beneficial for those wanting to develop skills in the area of Parent/Teen Communication.
 
Topics include:

  • Teenage development
  • Practical ways to enhance communication between parents and teens.

  • The impact of positive parenting on self-esteem in teenagers.

9  Youth 19 – Government Ambassador’s Mentorship Programme

Derry City and Strabane District Council are now recruiting for the 2nd cohort of a new ‘mentoring’ programme for organisations aimed at forging the success of young people aged upto 24 currently employed within the Council area. 

Cohort 1 of the programme was launched in June 2019 with organisations such as DCSDC, Drumahoe Childcare Ltd, First Source, PSNI and YMCA all taking part.  

The ‘Government Ambassador’s Programme’ aims to match young employees with mentors, within their own organisations, to build their capacity and confidence by enabling them to take responsibility for their own learning, development, progression and personal growth.  This is a great opportunity to develop young people working within your organisation and also have a lasting legacy of trained mentors with the ability to nurture future young employees.

The new initiative is funded by the PEACE IV Programme which is supported by the European Union and managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB).

The Government Ambassador’s Programme provides training and post-training support for Mentors to develop their mentorship skills AND provides knowledge and understanding workshops for young employees that include: Good Relations in the Workplace; Personal Effectiveness; Decision-Making & Problem Solving; Competency Based Interviews; Presentation Skills and Introduction to Child Rights (UNICEF).  All of the training within the programme is completely FREE.  Details of the dates and venues for the training workshops can be found here.

This programme is one of a number of strategic projects led by Derry City and Strabane District Council during Youth 19 – a year dedicated to 12-24 year olds aimed at promoting the voices, needs, priorities and rights of young people. (www.youth19.com)

Mentoring is an excellent way to invest in the leaders of tomorrow through facilitating young people to grow in confidence and realise their potential. Mentors play such a vital role in helping so many young people to go on and become successful in their lives.  It is also important to note the benefits realised by the mentors themselves – who gain great personal satisfaction from sharing their experience and supporting young people to grow and develop.

10 Positive Ageing Month - October 2019

Following on from the success of last year’s Positive Ageing Campaign, The Western Trust and lead partners Derry & Strabane District Council,  Age Friendly Communities and the Public Health Agency would like to run Positive Ageing Month in October again this year.  Positive Ageing Month will be run throughout October to coincide with International Older Persons Day and we are hoping to launch the campaign on Tuesday 24th September 2019. The aim of the Positive Ageing Campaign is to highlight events throughout the month of October for older people, reducing social isolation & loneliness.

11 Go ON NI events making getting online easier

Please find link to list of free Go ON NI events which take place in libraries, community centres and various venues across NI.  These are informal technology awareness sessions to help you go online for the first time, improve your digital skills and show you more about using smartphone and tablet devices.

Job purpose
Local Funding Officers are responsible for our grant-making activity in a geographical area, including early contact, pre-application support, assessment, decision-making, grant management, gathering and sharing of learning/intelligence through report writing. You will ensure our funding responds to the local context and challenge yourself and colleagues to continually improve the way we work in supporting local communities. 

You will build long term relationships with people and organisations in the area you cover. This will include reaching out to new and under the radar groups, supporting groups who are applying and continuing to support successful groups (post-grant being awarded) to obtain and share learning/best practice. 

You will be responsible for understanding how customers funding ideas align with our funding priorities, and making good judgements about when to take a funding idea further or when to signpost to other opportunities/funders. 

You will combine local knowledge of communities and services, understanding of best practice and the experience of grant-holders to make informed recommendations about who and what we fund through concise report writing and effective decision- making structures. 

You will represent The National Lottery Community Fund within your local area including at funding fairs, external meetings, events/conferences, and create opportunities for groups and people to come together through outreach and community engagement. You will share learning from your conversations, events, grant holder reports and evaluations with other colleagues across the Fund so that we can maximise our impact and make meaningful change to the lives of people and communities who we support. 

You’ll be part of a Local Team led by a Funding Manager and including a number of other Funding Officers. Therefore, excellent team working skills are essential in this role.
Person specification
We are looking for individuals who are passionate about making a difference through our funding, who really understand communities, including the VCSE sector. 

You will have: 
• Strong written and verbal communication including report writing skills and confidence to operate in a wide range of environments 
• Ability to build, maintain and strengthen excellent working relationships 
• Ability to manage your own workload with minimal supervision 
• Sound literacy/numerical skills 
• Sound IT skills 
• Confidence to use your own judgement, take initiative and challenge when appropriate 

You will have excellent knowledge and understanding of the community and voluntary sector and the Northern Ireland context that it operates in. You can work from a geographical location, including your home and our office with the expectation that you will be flexible in order to get the best outcomes for our customers. The role involves travel around a local area and if based locally regular travel into the Belfast office and travel expenses will be paid.

17  Tender - Socially Engaged Creative Artist

The Playhouse Theatre & Peacebuilding Academy is seeking to appoint a local, socially engaged creative artist working in any discipline to deliver a socially engaged project with individuals impacted by The Troubles. By Local Artist we mean an artist living and / or working in Northern Ireland & the Border Counties.

The Playhouse in partnership with Holywell Trust, Thomas D'Arcy McGee Foundation and Queens University Belfast received significant funding from the EU Peace IV to deliver the Theatre and Peacebuilding Academy starting January 2018 - June 2020. The 2.5 year project will be delivered in locations throughout Northern Ireland and the Border Counties.

The Theatre Peace Building Academy draws from this previous work and will programme national / international theatre artists with significant experience of using arts activity in areas of conflict & post conflict to promote healing and reconciliation. Project Base: The Playhouse, Derry-Londonderry. Location: Northern Ireland & the Border Counties of Ireland. Overview / Timescale:  The successful Local, Socially Engaged Creative Artist may work in any mode or medium of the Creative Arts and should be willing to work in close collaboration with International Artist Ailin Conant to refine, enhance, and develop their own artistic practice. The successful local artist will deliver a creative project culminating in a public event by Friday 13th December 2019

18  Public Appointment - Chief Inspector of Criminal Justice

The Department of Justice is seeking to appoint a new Chief Inspector of Criminal Justice in Northern Ireland.
 
This is a challenging and demanding position with a public profile that requires a high calibre individual with the appropriate skills and experience.  The successful candidate will provide leadership, build effective relationships, drive improvements in performance and demonstrate effective communication and the ability to think strategically.
 
The strategic aim of Criminal Justice Inspection is to promote the effectiveness, efficiency and even-handedness of the criminal justice system in Northern Ireland.  It plays a vital role in the architecture of criminal justice, seeking to secure improvement and greater co-operation so as to provide a better justice system for the whole community in Northern Ireland.
 
The appointment, a full-time post which carries a salary of £112,542 is for three years, with the successful candidate being able to reapply for a second term at the end of the initial appointment.

19  LAST MINUTE: Fully funded ERASMUS+ Training Course in Spain, 31.07-7.08

This is a super last-minute call for a UK attendee on a training course which will take place in Alcaniz, Spain on 31.07-7.08. 

The group is already made up of two attendees. Unfortunately, the third one dropped out and we are looking for a replacement. 

Please find the Info Pack of the project. If you think that you may know anyone interested, please pass the message further. Perhaps with the joint effort, we will manage to find a missing participant and provide him or her with a great learning opportunity.

22  Kirstie Allsopp's Handmade Christmas show in search of NI crafters!

The home guru will be back on our screens for the seventh season of Kirstie's Handmade Christmas, and she is on the hunt for NI crafters to join her in making festive goodies to feature on the show.  

Each episode has a competition segment dedicated to a particular craft and successful applicants will be needed for filming between August and October. 

This year's craft competitions are:
1. Gingerbread House building
2. Tree decorating
3. Cake decorating
4. Stocking making
5. Best Christmas Hamper
6. Best handmade toy
7. Best hand knitted Christmas Jumper  
8. Best Christmas paper craft
9. Best handmade wreath
10. Best handmade gift
11. Best handmade Decorations
12. Best handmade advent calendar
13. Best handmade table dressing
14. Best Christmas needlecraft (to include all sewing crafts)
15. Best Handmade Pet Gift 

In addition to the 15 festive themed categories, Channel 4 is also looking to feature a wide range of other crafts from passionate makers, and are encouraging anyone interested to also get in touch.
Applications close Friday August 16 and applicants must be 16 + to enter.
Applicants aged 16 or 17 will require consent from a parent or legal guardian.
