1DfC - Call for applications to the Small Capital Grants Programme
Co-operation Ireland has been appointed by the Department for Communities (DfC) as the Intermediary Funding Body for the 2019/20 Small Capital Grants Programme for Northern Ireland. The purpose of this fund is to promote Partnership and Collaboration within the voluntary and Community sector.
Who can apply?
Applications must include a minimum of 2 organisations. Those applying must nominate a lead partner to whom the whole of the grant will be paid. The Lead Partner should complete the application form. The amount of grant available to apply for will be dependent on the number of partners within the application:
2 partner groups = can apply for £1,500
3 - 4 partner groups = can apply for up to £3,500
5+ partner groups = can apply for up to maximum £5,000
To be eligible for grant assistance applicants must be constituted voluntary or community sector organisations located in Northern Ireland, with an annual unrestricted income of less than £100,000 per year.
("Unrestricted" income relates to funds that the non-profit organisation may use for any purpose. “Restricted” income relates to funds whose use is restricted by a particular purpose and must be used in a specified period e.g. grant offer from a Funding Body)
Applicants must deliver the project, pay supplier(s) and submit a grant claim by 31st March 2020.

3 Good Relations Week: Mon 16th Sep - Sun 22nd Sep 2019
Good Relations Week is a fantastic platform to showcase the good work that organisations are doing in our local area in the field of community relations and cultural awareness.
This week will celebrate all aspects of our culture and heritage, promotes cultural diversity and tackles sectarianism and racism. It is about inspiring news projects, promoting understanding, respect and engagement between all sections of our community.
Good Relations Week will run from Monday 16th September to Sunday 22nd September and will include events such as workshops, training events, launches, music events, showcases of work, public events, private events etc. They can range from the very small to the very large; and indeed may include events that are happening anyway but fall within the dates above, such as Culture Night.
These events are being organised by a wide range of bodies’ including DCSDC, libraries, museums, community, voluntary and youth groups.
There is something within this programme that suits all ages from young to old.

5 Valued Voices: A Celebration of Women Through the Troubles

The Mayor of Derry and Strabane District Council Michaela Boyle will host a gathering in Derry’s Guildhall to celebrate the ‘strong resourceful women who were the backbone of our community throughout the Troubles.’
Following the success of a similar event last February, the upcoming ‘Celebration of Women through the Troubles’ conference will take place in the Guildhall’s Whittaker Suite on Wednesday 18th September from 10am until 1pm.
Amongst those taking part is Hazel Deeney. Hazel was with her husband Trevor when he was shot dead by the INLA in the driveway of their home on 8 April 1998. Trevor, who was 34 years old at the time, was the last person killed before the Good Friday Agreement, and was buried on the day the Agreement was signed. Hazel will speak of her experience ‘as a woman and mother raising her four children on her own with very little money, while dealing with her own grief’.
A second speaker, Creggan resident, Theresa Brown spent all her working life in this city’s shirt factories including Tillie’s and Mc Candless’s where she worked for more than twenty years. Theresa will share her story of her life and times in the factory as the Troubles raged around her.
Other speakers include Waterside resident, Liz Bishop and Creggan / Brandywell woman, Chrissie Mc Anee.
The event will once again be chaired by Catherine Cooke, Co-ordinator of Foyle Women’s Information Network, who commented, ‘This event is being held to celebrate the women who have been the glue holding together our community in the face of the onslaught of violence that has caused so much suffering over the years, from 1968 and certainly hasn’t gone totally away.
All women are welcome. It is not necessary to have a traumatic story. Everybody’s unique story is important and, during the morning there will be plenty of opportunities for the women gathered together to share their own stories and hear from other people.
Catherine added ‘ Attendance at this free event, originally mooted by Danny Toland whose father John was shot dead in the Happy Landing Eglinton is not restricted solely to women. All who wish to respectfully hear about the lived experiences of women through the Troubles will be warmly welcomed.’
Tea, coffee and scones will be served on arrival at 10am with a light lunch at 12:30pm.

6 Free Unicef UK Training - Child Rights - 18th & 19th September
Derry and Strabane are currently moving towards Child Friendly Community Status. A community where all children, whether living in care, using a children’s centre or visiting their local leisure centre, have a meaningful say in, and truly benefit from, the local decisions, services and spaces that shape their lives. As part of this journey we are training professionals and volunteers working with children and young people to raise awareness of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and a Child Rights Based Approach.
We are also offering more in-depth training on the practical side of engagement and participation. This training is ideal for people working with children and young people who wish to support us to get the voice of their networks when moving through the discovery phase.

Introduction to Child Rights In Practice

This practical and interactive session offers an introduction to the subject of children’s human rights as enshrined in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. The session comprises a mix of theory, group discussions and case study-based activities.
Engagement and Participation Training
Thursday 19TH September 2019, 9.30-4.30pm, Venue TBC
This training is aimed at staff who engage directly with young people, manage people who engage directly with young people and want to upskill their team OR staff who aspire to engage with young people in future and want to adopt a Child Rights Based Approach to participation.
Completion of the ‘Introduction to Child Rights in Practice’ is mandatory for taking part in the Engagement and Participation Training.
Strengthening Families Programme is an evidence-based parenting programme, designed to promote the protective factors associated with good parenting and better outcomes for children.
Delivered over 14 sessions SFP works with the whole family by improving relationships, parental bonds and parenting skills whilst improving social and life skills for the young people participating.
For organisations SFP Provides:
-access to a free evidence based programme to complement/enhance existing service delivery
-Facilitates greater interagency working
-Upskilling and professional development of staff
-Free training programme
-Access to additional free training
-Improved outcomes for service users

This is a two-day programme which uses experiential learning. The workshop is suitable for mental health professionals and counsellors. It provides an opportunity to enhance the awareness of their own anger. In addition, as participants gain greater awareness of these aspects of themselves, they will gain greater insight as to how to help their clients explore their own anger. This workshop will provide practical tools that will enhance the participant’s capacity to work with clients who are angry.

On this programme you will have the chance to work with professional costume designers to create costumes for the Halloween Parade. You will also create light sculptures that will be displayed as part of the Awakening the Walls Sculpture Trail.
I am the Research Assistant on a project sponsored by the 'Labor Studies Program', University of Massachusetts Boston by professor Terry McLarney. In short, the root of the task is to discover how trade unions in Northern Ireland fostered civil rights, avoided sectarianism, fostered solidarity, and advocated for equal workplace rights. For example, we would be interested in any trade union involvement in advocating for the Fair Employment Act of 1989 or the Peace Process in Northern Ireland.
We are also interested in finding out how trade unions navigated their businesses whilst dealing with the troubles, ongoing sectarianism and civil rights activism. On that note, we are equally interested in how trade unions remained non-sectarian and how individual trade union activists were able to deal with the day to day work of trade union business as well as engaging in issues beyond that.
This is where you come in-I was hoping you could point me in the direction of any activists from the 1970s/80s/90s, who had experience with other trade unionists who were involved in such activities. The information you provide can contribute to development of the history of Northern Ireland and a unique insight into the often overshadowed history of the trade unions. I believe that sharing your experience could be personally therapeutic and also encourage others to come forward to share their stories.
