1  Unscheduled Care in Western Trust area - Your experience, views and suggestions

Can you spare 15 minutes of your valuable time to answer eight straightforward questions about Unscheduled Care in this part of the Western Health & Social Care Trust area?

If so please click here to begin this anonymous survey.

North West Community Network has been commissioned by the Western Local Commissioning Group (LCG) to conduct Community Engagement around the area of Unscheduled Care.

Unscheduled Care basically refers to when someone accesses health and social care services unexpectedly.  This can occur at any time and crosses the traditional boundaries between general practitioner (GP), community and hospital services and means there must be a 24 hour service available.

Across the Western Trust area, over 1000 surveys will be completed by the end of March 2017 and then analysed to determine what changes or priorities need to be considered in the shaping and commissioning of future services.

You can decide to complete the survey yourself, share it with friends and family, colleagues and service users.  The value and analysis of responses will be greatly improved if you can include answers on Age, Gender and Post Code so you are kindly asked to record these.

Your can complete this survey electronically here or, if more convenient, print and complete by hand.  It is also available on the Network's website -  www.nwcn.org

2  Spaces 4 Change

Spaces for Change (S4C) is a UK wide programme that will find, fund, support and connect young people aged 16-24 to start and run social ventures that unlock the potential of unused or under-utilised spaces for the benefit of the local community, especially other young people.

From 2016-2019 100 awards will be available for young leaders consisting of up to £5,000 project funding, a dedicated award manager providing tailored support, cohort support, and peer to peer networking opportunities for sharing knowledge and learning.

Young people aged 18 – 24 will also have the opportunity to crowd fund alongside their award with support from Spacehive. This will enable the young person to demonstrate tangible support from the local community for their idea, learn valuable skills, as well as increasing the chances of sustainability of the social venture.

Criteria for applying: To apply for an award, see below for the criteria:

3   Applications for Foyle YouthBank open on Friday 13th January!

Foyle Youthbank is a group of 14 young people aged 17-25 representing youth groups and communities across the Foyle area.  Delivered in partnership with St Columbs Park House YouthAction N.I. has been working with the young people to form a grant making committee and become ‘YouthBankers.’ They are now very excited to have completed their training and are inviting individual young people or groups to come up with ideas to support young people’s emotional health and well being across the Foyle area.

This simple process involves young people developing their ideas around this very significant issue and filling out a short application form to explain the project and why it should be funded.  The young people as a group or as individuals will then be interviewed by the Youthbankers to decide on awarding a grant.

Laura Murphy member of Foyle YouthBank has said,

 “We are really excited to be in a position to provide this opportunity for young people. We have completed research and asked young people what is important for them to fund. Emotional health and well being came top of their priorities and therefore we are focusing on projects or activities that seek to improve emotional health and well being.’

As well as providing grants, YouthBank is also a personal development programme helping to build self-esteem and confidence as well as providing opportunities to learn their skills in leadership, team-work, decision-making, negotiation and consensus building, public speaking and lots, lots more.

Emma Johnston a Youth Worker from YouthAction Northern Ireland explained the significance of YouthBank

The really unique aspect of YouthBank is young people applying to other young people to support and actively tackle issues and concerns in their communities.  We invite young people from across the City and beyond to apply and make the most of this opportunity”

Applications from individuals or groups of young people to apply to Foyle YouthBank are going live on Friday 13th January.

For further information on Foyle Youthbank and to receive an application please contact Connor or Emma on 028 7131 8854 or connor@youthaction.org  emma@youthaction.org

YouthBank is coordinated through the Irish Youth Foundation and been supported by the Big Lottery Fund.

4 The Inside Out Programme is pleased to announce the Arrival of 'LID+'

What is LID+?

‘LID+’ is a year-long a programme of activity (funded by the European Commission Representative in London) that informs, supports, mentors and pro-actively engages young people (including those under the age of 18), young leaders, youth workers and other practitioners (with a remit for young people) in the Erasmus+ Programme in 2017.

It is one of 7 projects across the UK to be funded and is based on the work that Inside Out has been doing over the last number of years promoting access to and participation in the Youth in Action and Erasmus + programmes (at least 180 individuals have participated in more than 80 programmes across 20 countries or more since April 2008) but also in light of some of the changes affecting the Youth Service in Northern Ireland.

Outcomes of LID+

In our programme there will be four main outcomes, increases in: (i) awareness of the Erasmus+ Programme (ii) numbers expressing an interest in participating in the Erasmus+ programme (iii) the number of ‘submission-ready’ applications (post-programme) and (iv) application's submitted.  We will measure the increases against the number of users not previously engaged in the programme.

The project will work specifically to target (i) Volunteering Abroad (ii) Youth Exchanges and (iii) Key Action1 Mobility Projects.  It will do this by providing a tailor-made service to local organisations (primarily) across Northern Ireland (due to smaller population/smaller geographical reach/area) but also ensuring a presence in the rest of the UK that complements but does not duplicate the work of the UK National Agency.

Activities will include

  • Formal launch of the programme to ‘announce its arrival’ to youth work communities across Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK;
  • Information Sessions to inform local publics about the Erasmus+ Programme (all 11 local Council areas in Northern Ireland as well as areas in England, Scotland and Wales)
  • ‘Listening Service’ with individual organisations seeking advice and information in order to support the development of potential project proposals;
  • Feedback service on ‘Initial Proposals’;
  • Mentoring Service – tailored support to ensure the full development of applications;
  •  ‘One-to-One’s’ to critique draft applications that are (almost) ‘submission ready’;
  • Development Workshops specifically with young people aged 13+ to support their introduction to and involvement with Erasmus+ with the specific task of nurturing and harnessing and/or responding to identified needs that might lead to the development of themes for potential youth exchange applications.
  • A range of International Learning Opportunities for ‘interested parties’ through the on-going work of The LID (Leadership through Intercultural Dialogue) Programme and its international partners
  • Regular Localised Information Bulletin on Erasmus+ developments and opportunities (minimum bi-monthly);
  • Contact Making Seminar between experienced and non-experienced Erasmus+ users but with an interest in developing mutually beneficial applications.  It will bring together experienced Erasmus+ users with ‘new’ users to share and exchange information about their experiences with a view to not only developing projects but to also work on preparing applications during the seminar.
  • On-going: ‘Live Network’ established between Inside Out and its already existing partners (see below) so as to support the development of local proposals from potential applications to ‘submission-ready applications’;
  • ‘Market Place’ 30th Anniversary Celebration Event (NI only) affording all groups from Northern Ireland involved in YiA/E+ to ‘market’, celebrate and contribute to a one-off celebration event

Anyone interested in LID+ should contact Fergal Barr at: thekingisalive@hotmail.com

Teatime Event - WAVE Trauma Centre - Wednesday 18th January & 6.00pm

Come along to our Teatime Event at HOLYWELL - DiverseCity Community Partnership in Bishop Street on Wednesday 18th January 2017 to hear about the work of WAVE Trauma Centre locally.

WAVE is a grass roots, cross community, voluntary organisation formed in 1991 to support people bereaved of a spouse as a result of violence in Northern Ireland. It was expanded later to incorporate the needs of children and young people and anyone injured or traumatised through ‘the Troubles’.

Today the overall aim of WAVE is to offer care and support to anyone bereaved, injured or traumatised through the civil unrest in Northern Ireland, irrespective of religious, cultural or political belief.

To hear more about their work come along to the session. To confirm a place at the event please email lisa@holywelltrust.com or give us a call on (028) 7126 1941.

Trial of PH Pearse - Friday 20th January @ 7pm

‘The Trial of P.H. Pearse’ play will be staged at Holywell - DiverseCity Community Partnership in Bishop Street (tickets cost £5).
  Holywell Trust, in association with Newpoint Players and The Thomas D’Arcy McGee Summer School, is staging a rehearsed reading of Anthony Russell’s new play The Trial of Pádraig Pearse. It examines the case for and against Pearse proceeding with the Easter rising.
In this ‘Court Of History’ Pearse is defended by John Mitchell (1815 - 1875), a physical force republican and former Young Ireland comrade of Thomas D’Arcy McGee. The prosecution is presented by D’Arcy McGee, the Irish rebel, Canadian patriot and Founding Father of Canadian Confederation, who will argue that the 1916 Rising was undemocratic and unnecessary.

The good people of Holywell have offered to stage a  re-trial  on 20th January.

Citizen's Jury
A positive  engaging dimension to the play sees the audience debate the issues in the play as jurors in the jury room. This enables  a participative role for the audience as they deliberate on the issues as presented by prosecution and defence, as well as voting on the final outcome.
The musical dimension to the theme, based around the motif of Óro Se do Bheatha Bhaile (verses of which Pearse wrote, and which he reputedly whistled on his way to the stonebreakers’ yard) will be provided by Gerry O’Connor, fiddle player with the Irish Rovers.

The dramatized reading and citizens jury is part of the Holywell Trust’s community relations programme supported through the Central Good Relations Fund of The Executive Office.

Tickets @£5 are still available so call into HOLYWELL - DiverseCity Community Partnership in Bishop Street or call to book on (028) 7126 1941 or email hello@holywelltrust.com

13   Music Bridge Training Course

The Music Bridge programme is now accepting trainees onto the course for January 2017.

The programme is run by Musicians without Borders, an international non-profit organisation which uses music as a tool for peacebuilding and reconciliation in current and post-conflict regions, in partnership with Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin.

The training offers an introduction to the principles of Musicians without Borders, training youth leaders, social workers, teachers and community practitioners how to integrate musical skills into their youth support work.

While the course uses musical activities to illustrate workshop leadership skills, a musical background is not required to benefit from the course. Previous trainees have come from diverse backgrounds such as music therapy, art, psychology, community and social work.

There are three training periods of four days each. All training sessions will be held at Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin on Great James Street, Derry/Londonderry. The training dates are as follows:

January 29 - Feb 1, 2017 (9.00 am – 5.00 pm)

April 2 - 5, 2017

May 21 - 24, 2017

22 New book on Derry Shirt Factory Girls from Guildhall Press

“From Factory Floor to Dance Floor” by Patsy Durnin and Willie Deery recounts the life and times of the Derry factory workers at work and play.

Life on the factory floor between the 1940s and the 1960s resembled that of a close-knit community. It provided for the social, emotional and economic needs of the women who sang as they worked during the day, danced and dated at night, and discussed all the ‘bars’ in the parlours after the weekends. For them, the factory floor and dance floor were firmly intertwined.

In relating the story, the authors have combined a large collection of photos from the girls with their honest, personal reminiscences to give a buttonhole peep into the life of the shirt-factory workers.

This informative and fascinating insight offers an affectionate celebration of the spirit of the women and young girls who sewed and sang, laughed and cried, in all Derry’s shirt factories down the decades.
