AccessNI – Practical Workshop, The Junction 10am, 28 May 08

AccessNI, the government’s new service for carrying out background checks for recruitment purposes went live on April 1st 2008.

For community & voluntary sector groups, the key area of interest is not only on how to satisfy legal requirements in relation to salaried posts but also in relation to volunteers, so important to the core work of many organisations.  This is especially important if your organisation delivers services to groups such as children/young people or vulnerable adults.

The new procedures replace the previous POCVA system and all future checks must be made according to the new regulations.

AccessNI’s website provides a range of essential information for groups of all sizes who may require to conduct checks for staff/volunteers.

A very useful resource is included online at:

www.accessni.gov.uk/ecrit-guidance-document.pdf

This document describes the various levels of disclosure now possible, the relevant terminology and the timelines that all groups need to build in to their recruitment processes if a background check is likely to be required.

As useful as the website is, any new system usually becomes most familiar through experience.  For this reason, the Network and the North-West Volunteer Centre have come together to organise a practical workshop to deal with the operational issues that most groups will face in these early stages of the new system.

This workshop will take place in:

The Junction, Bishop Street, Derry~Londonderry

10 – 12noon, Wednesday 28th May 08

Interest is expected to be high and with places limited, you are advised to register your interest early.  Contact the Network on 71 279090 or email info@nwcn.org.

Dance/ Movement in Therapy and Education - Echo Echo Dance Theatre Company

Echo Echo Dance Theatre Company will be offering an exciting and innovative series of training and personal development events in Dance/ Movement in Therapy and Education, from the 30th May to the 21st June in Derry.

The notion of Dance/ Movement Therapy is founded on the principle that movement reflects an individual’s patterns of thinking and feeling. Guest teacher, Fabian Chyle is returning to Derry for a lecture demonstration on Friday 30th May and a practical workshop on Sunday 1st June. A participant from last year said: “ I have a much better understanding that there are other ways to express feelings or experiences. As a psychotherapist I feel we are limited in that 'talking' therapy is not the only way.”

Adding an extra twist to this year’s event, Co-Artistic Director of Echo Echo, Ursula Laeubli introduces her series on Dance/Movement in Education. Dance and Movement is at the core of any creative learning process and this has recently been recognised as an important element in the revised curriculum in schools. Ursula has designed this series to give anyone who teaches or works with children and young people the skills to include dance and movement in their daily work. There will be a lecture demonstration on Friday 13th June followed by 2 workshops on Saturday 14th and 21st June.

All events will be held at Echo Echo’s dance studio in The Waterside Theatre, Derry. For detailed information, visit www.echoechodance.com, e-mail info@echoechodance.com or phone +44(0)28 7134 2266.

Launch of Zoela’s Stories – CD Resource for Children

Zoela's Stories is a new CD of original stories for children.  They have been written by Dr. Helena Schlindwein with a therapeutic purpose for children. “Hopefully they will stimulate the creativity and imagination of the child and build resources within.”

Co-hosted by the Chamber of Commerce and Women In Enterprise the event will be at Chamber of Commerce House, 1 St Columb's Court, Bishop Street, Londonderry BT48 6PT.
