Stronger Leaders Programme for Community & Voluntary sector. Applications are now being accepted for the Stronger Leaders programme, a groundbreaking professional development programme specifically tailored to equip the leaders of Ireland’s community and voluntary organisations with the knowledge and skills required to guide their organisations through the current period of legislative, social and economic change. The Stronger Leaders Programme has already been provided to two groups of 16 leaders respectively in 2006/2007 and was phenomenally well received. It has been developed based on research conducted by The Wheel, and is the first of its kind for our sector in Ireland. Intended for the most senior paid manager in a community / voluntary / charitable organisation, the programme offers leaders and their organisations an invaluable opportunity for growth and development. Please note that the closing date for receipt of applications is 11 July 2008. For further information email: info@wheel.ie or go online to register www.wheel.ie |

Demonstration at Stormont, Sustaining Women’s Community based Training & Education
Monday 23rd June - This demonstration is around sustaining women's community-based training and education. For some of you, that means coming to the end of Peace projects, difficulty in securing match funding for ESF projects, uncertainty around future working relationships with colleges or general sustainability of the women's training and education sector.
The plan is to hand a letter in at 11.30, so people are asked to be assembled in front of the building by 11.00, but preferably try to get there earlier. Those arriving should tell security they are there to see Jennifer McCann.
The event is to raise awareness of the issues and highlight problems individual groups are facing. The event can be used by individual groups to highlight their own issues in the local press.

Giving a Voice to Africans in Northern Ireland, West of the Bann – book launch
Mr Chinedu Onyejelem, Editor & Publisher, Metro Éireann at 1.00 pm on Thursday 26th June, Minor Hall, Magee campus
This report offers for the first time an insight into the experiences of Africans in Northern Ireland, drawn from the ‘invisible’ group in the West of the Bann. In a post Good Friday Northern Ireland and in a context where diversity is increasingly recognized as an asset, this work presents a unique opportunity to answer central anthropological questions concerning the ways of life of the African community in Northern Ireland. The project was managed by Professor Máiréad Nic Craith who originally conceived the idea together with Dr Rachel Naylor. It was generously funded by European Peace II funding via the Community Relations Council. The researchers were Elly Odhiambo and Khanyisela Moyo who are both of African background, and currently live in Northern Ireland. Their ethnographic experience was invaluable since they both live in and spend a lot of time with the community which is the subject of study.
RSVP (acceptance only) by 21 June 2008 - Please post, email or fax your acceptance of an invitation (admits two) to: Mrs Gemma Thornton, Academy for Irish Cultural Heritages, University of Ulster, Magee campus, Northland Rd, Londonderry, BT48 7JL; g.thornton@ulster.ac.uk; fax: (+44) 028 71375435. |
