Victims and their relatives urged to apply to £1.8m Memorial Fund

Conflict victims and victims’ relatives who may be eligible for financial assistance from the Memorial Fund are being encouraged to apply.  Some £1.8m has been made available to the Memorial Fund by the Office of the First Minister and Deputy First Minister.

The funding will help some of the most vulnerable citizens in our society and their families in a practical way.  The new Victims and Survivors strategy, when fully implemented, will see a more focused, co-ordinated and needs-led approach to how we provide support to victims and survivors.

The payments will be distributed through several schemes currently operated by the Memorial Fund.

People over 60 who have lost a brother or sister or a child or who were injured themselves during the conflict can apply for a £250 payment to help with the cost of living, particularly winter heating costs.

If you are a new applicant for this scheme, you are also entitled to an initial £200 payment upon approval by the Memorial Fund.  If you lost a parent, child or have been injured yourself as a result of the conflict, you can apply for a £500 respite break voucher.

If you are a registered carer or a primary carer of people injured during the conflict, you can also apply for a payment.  Registered carers will need a letter from their GP to confirm they are a registered carer.

If you think you are entitled to financial assistance from any of these schemes, or if you would like further information, please contact the: Northern Ireland Memorial Fund, Unit 1, Massey Avenue, Belfast, BT4 2JT

The Women Caring Trust

The Women Caring Trust is now open for Bridge Building Grants of between £5,000 and £10,000.  The Trust is looking for projects which aim to build bridges between communities through creative activities such as music, dance, drama or the arts.  Collaborative activities such as hiking, mountaineering, or orienteering will also be considered.

The Trust wants to encourage collaboration among young people by encouraging them to work together to achieve a common aim be it musical, theatrical or practical, giving them a new skill and a better understanding of each other’s community.

WCT will not fund individuals, salary costs, capital costs, national organisations, publications or research (unless as the output of a project e.g. a book of artwork), playgroups or mother and toddlers groups, foreign travel or expeditions, or projects devoted solely to the welfare of those with learning or physical disabilities.

Priority will be given to applications that demonstrate cultural inclusion and promotion of good relations.

The deadline for applications is 28 February 2010.  Successful applicants will be notified by the end of March.

For more information call Sandra Faulkner at VSB on 028 9020 0850, email Sandra@vsb.org.uk or visit
