Repair Grants for Places of Worship

This programme is designed to help sustain and conserve heritage at risk, through urgent repairs to places of worship.  The UK-wide scheme is delivered through four separate programmes in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

HLF will only offer grants for urgent repairs to the fabric of the building. They will not consider applications for other work (including proposals for new facilities) for a grant. It may be possible to apply for a grant for projects other than fabric repairs concerning places of worship under their other grant programmes, as long as any urgent structural repairs have been done.

Grants range up to a maximum of £100,000 with a minimum of 25% match funding from another source.

All grants will be based on a two stage process and they will only support urgent repair projects. If it is clear that the application is appropriate and there is an urgent need, they will consider requests for a full award decision to be made without the two stage process. Stage one development funding may be available for those projects that successfully meet the assessment tests and seem most likely to qualify for a stage two grant towards the main repairs. They will only provide repair grants when projects are fully developed and you know the actual costs.

They will divide applications into two competitive batches each year. This will make sure that the Lottery money that is available goes to urgent repairs to buildings. They recommend that you contact their office in Belfast to check the dates when you should send them your application and when they will make their decision.

Guaranteed public access:

One of their main priorities is to promote a wider appreciation of historic places of worship. Repairing important buildings can benefit the community, but visitor access is an important way of providing for increased understanding and enjoyment of their heritage.

They welcome applications from all faith groups and denominations, Christian and non-Christian. However, you must be a formally constituted religious organisation. Your building must be listed. In all cases, the building must be regularly used as a place of public worship on at least six days of the year. They expect that any building they offer a grant to will stay in use as a place of regular public worship for at least 10 years after the grant-aided repairs have been completed.

Important Dates:

Repair Grants for places of worship - 31 March 2010

Repair Grants for Places of Worship - September deadline - 30 September 2010

Community Relations through Sport

Donegal Sports Partnership wishes to invite you to the launch of our Community Relations through sport on

12th March 2010 at 10.30am in the An Grianán Theatre, Letterkenny.

RSVP: Office No 7, River Front House, Pearce Road, Letterkenny

Tel: 074 911 6078 / Email: michael@activedonegal.com

Community Relations through Sport proposes to address social exclusion, racism and sectarianism through the medium of sport and physical activity. There is widespread belief in the key role sport can play in combating social exclusion at community level. The project seeks to address these social exclusion issues by engaging young people between the ages of 14 and 18 years of ages from all religious backgrounds through a programme of capacity and confidence building, improving self esteem thus contributing to a more vibrant and inclusive community. The programme will operate in partnership with the established community/ youth organisations within the identified areas in order to empower young people to provide answers to building trust within divided communities. The programme model will include the practical support from national governing bodies of sport from majority sports and minority sports including FAI, IRFU, Cricket Ireland, Athletics, Badminton Ireland and Cycling which will be twinned with community relations and cultural diversity workshops to allow young people to explore their own cultures beliefs and traditions and challenge the stereotypes in order to acknowledge and address difference. Two integral education courses will run alongside the sporting sessions. One from FETAC called Living in a Diverse Society and The Community Sports Leadership Award from Sports Leaders UK.

The project objectives include;

Promoting a model of sport and education to raise an awareness of the social exclusion issues and prejudices, which currently exist within border communities of Newtowncunningham, St Johnston, Lifford and Raphoe in Co Donegal and communities within the Strabane and Derry City Council areas.

Empowering and providing a forum for young people irrespective of culture, belief or tradition to explore stereotypes. Set up a Youth Forum to discuss relevant topics surrounding the project. E.g. racism, sectarianism, culture.

Creating a steering group within key personnel of the existing community and sports organisations in the identified areas in order to share the principles of the programme.

Providing a specialised sports specific training module in each identified areas of a cross section of majority, minority and traditional sports including soccer, rugby, Gaelic games, cycling, cricket and badminton.

Provide young people involved in the programme with The Community Sports Leadership Award from Sports Leaders UK.

Allowing the young people to develop their leadership and teamwork skills in coordinating, developing and delivering a festival of multi sports and physical activities in each location and on a cross border basis.

Bringing young people together for residential sessions in order to develop social contacts and promote the ethos of the programme.

Providing a club/school link in each of the identified areas.

Creating a forum for coaches and sports organisations to come together to share ideas for future development within the area.

We would be delighted if you could attend on the day.
