The Drapers' Company aims to improve the quality of life and expectations of people and their communities within the UK, particularly those disadvantaged or socially excluded, through the award of grants in the fields of education and relief of need. Drapers fund in the following areas: Relief of need, Education and Training, Textiles, Northern Ireland and Heritage, Arts.
The average level of grant is between £1,000 and £5,000, however, from time to time, the Trustee aims to make occasional larger grants (£10,000 - £25,000) where our support will make a marked difference to the success of a particular project. Grants are usually made on a one-off basis rather than recurrent. Further submissions will not be expected for at least two years after an initial grant has been made. Grants payable over a set term, i.e. two or three years grants, are occasionally approved by the Trustee. In such cases, recipients will be required to provide feedback and a yearly progress report to confirm that satisfactory progress is being made. These grants are also subject to the continuing availability of funds.
They do not have a standard application form. Written applications should be sent to the Charities Administrator in the form of one or two sides of A4, clearly outlining the purpose of your application, level of funding required and details on how this will specifically be allocated, detailed budget of your project, targeted beneficiaries, details of other funders or grants secured and any other relevant information, that you feel would also be helpful. You should also include any supporting literature together with a copy of your most recent audited accounts and annual report.

1. What Does The Charities Act (NI) 2008 Mean For Community Groups? Friday 19 Feb 2010, The Junction, 9.45am – 12.30pm
Northern Ireland’s charities and not for profit organisations are facing major changes as the new provisions of the Charities Act (NI) 2008 are implemented.
NWCN has teamed up with accountancy firm, Moore Stephens, to deliver a customised session for the Community & Voluntary sector to help develop understanding of what practical implications will flow from the Charities Act. Under the Act, a new charities regulator, the charity Commission for Northern Ireland, has been established. The Commission will play a key role in how the charitable sector is organised and will establish a compulsory charity register of all charities operating in Northern Ireland which will go live in April 2010.
2. A Northern Ireland Bill of Rights – What Do You In The North-West Think? Tue 23 February 2010, 10am – 12noon, St. Columb’s Park House
As a member of the Consortium, NWCN has organised a local discussion on the proposed Bill of Rights to give you in the North-West the chance to contribute to the consultation ending 1 March 2009. Kevin Hanratty, Campaigns Manager with the Human Rights Consortium, will take us through the background to the Bill of Rights campaign, and the process to date. This will include the Human Rights Commission’s advice and the government response in the form of the consultation document. Our discussion will deal with how you can get involved in the campaign with the consultation deadline now looming – it is important that our elected representatives receive an unambiguous message that a strong Bill of Rights is what is needed for the protection of everyone.
To register for either of these free events or for further information please contact the Network at your earliest convenience on 028 7127 9090 or email info@nwcn.org |

Want to recycle an old computer?
Camara, a charity which takes in used computers and refurbishes them and sends them to schools in Africa, will be collecting used computers at a shopping centre near you this month. The charity is constantly on the lookout for members of the public and organisations that will donate their used computers. There is a minimum spec (Pentium 3, 256 MB RAM, 600Mhz processor, 10GB) but a good rule of thumb is if the computer is under 10 years old and switches on, Camara should be able to reuse it or some part of it.
Collection details are as follows: 16 January - Sprucefield Shopping Centre - 9.00am-6.00pm 23 January - Quays shopping Centre, Newry - 9.00am-6.00pm 30 January - Crescent Link Retail Park, Derry - 9.00pm-5.30pm
For more information contact Ann Fitzpatrick at Camara on 028 9033 2470 or email: belfast@camara.ie. |

Call for Participants for St Patrick's Day Parade
The North West Carnival Initiative are calling on all community groups, schools, youth groups, students, individuals and artists to take part in this year's St Patrick's Day Carnival Parade, which has the theme 'Springtime in Wonderland' .
We want to hear from groups who have ideas of how they would interpret the theme and make their group unique within the parade, especially imaginative ideas that showcase either Springtime and Wonderland or both. It may be a representation of Alice's magical Wonderland or it may a group's very own unique wonderland with a springtime twist! Other suggestions include ideas that capture Springtime, which is a time of growth, renewal and of new plant and animal life.
We are offering free Carnival skills workshops to interested Groups; workshops could include mask making, dance, performance, Costume design and making, fabric painting and carnival prop building to create your own pageant. These workshops will take place in your own community centre or local venue and will be facilitated by fully skilled Carnival Art Facilitators who will assist with deciding on a theme, teach you new skills and prepare you for the wonderful finale parade. All costs are covered by the NWCI. We also want to hear from Freelance artists who possess carnival art and/or community engagement expertise to facilitate community workshops and to contribute innovative ideas for creating carnival spectacles.
Interested? Please contact Helen Harley by either: Tel: 028 71 365151 Ext: 6938 or e-mail: Helen.harley@derrycity.gov.uk This project is core funded by National Lottery funds through the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and Derry City Council. |
