Comic Relief grants open today!
We accept applications from the voluntary and community sector throughout the UK including: constituted voluntary and community groups, charities, social enterprises, co-operatives, faith organisations, and community interest companies. We make grants in the programme areas outlined below. You can make only one application to one programme at a time. Comic Relief will be funding: Mental Health / Domestic and Sexual Abuse / Refugee and Asylum Seeking Women / Sport for Change Local Communities / Older People
Young People aged 11-25: Sexually Exploited and Trafficked Young People / Young People and Alcohol Young People with Mental Health Problems
We fund work in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland - and are very keen to make sure that we reach all parts of the UK, especially areas which often miss out, such as rural communities. We can pay for all or some of your project costs, but we encourage you to get some of your funding from other sources if you can. There is no minimum or maximum grant in most of our programmes, but where there are limits, these are clearly stated in the programme guidelines. Our grants on average vary between £25,000 and £40,000 per year, and rarely exceed this upper limit. We are unlikely to make large grants to very small organisations, and we will not usually fund all the costs of an application made by charities with an annual income over £10 million.
For further information and how to apply for a grant see: http://www.comicrelief.com/apply_for_a_grant/uk |

Youthlife - “Bereaved by Suicide” - Growing Through Change Programme
Friday 26th – Sunday 28th February 2010
Grieving is a natural response to loss. It brings with it many different feelings and emotions. The bereaved need to be given time and space to express and work through their feelings of grief. When a loved one dies by suicide, the grieving response can be more complex and even more difficult to cope with. The feelings and emotions can appear so intense and unbearable that you may feel that you will not be able to cope.
Families bereaved by suicide often feel socially isolated. Friends and neighbours not knowing what to say may withdraw or avoid you. As a result families may feel stigmatised and isolated. You may not know anyone else bereaved in this tragic way. This may add to the intense feelings of grief and loss and make your unique journey through grief especially lonely and difficult.
The trauma is particularly difficult for children and young people to deal with because their limited life experience does not yet contain the tools to cope with such a situation. Often the family tries to protect the children by not telling them what has happened and by keeping them away from the funeral. Young people need to work through their grief also. They need to know that it is alright to show their grief in their own way without feeling guilty or wrong.
The Growing Through Change Residential Weekend is a structured programme presented by a team of trained young volunteers who themselves have experienced loss in this tragic way. Young people take a strong leadership role in all aspects of the weekend. They will be presenting their personal stories of grief and loss and will be reaching out to their peers with compassion and care. In small discussion groups the Youthlife team will create a confidential, supported and neutral environment for young people to feel safe to explore and share their individual stories with the support and acceptance of their peer group.
The weekend is residential and takes place in the Residential Centre, Ulster American Folk Park from 8 pm on Friday 26 February until 5 pm on Sunday 28 February. The activities of the weekend consist of: personal experience presentations by young volunteers, small discussion groups, audio and visual presentations, role plays, recreational and fun activities.
For further information and application forms please contact: Bridie or Pat at the Youthlife Centre Tel: 028 71377227 Mobile: 07912507388 Email: youthlife_be@hotmail.com or visit our web site www.youthlife.btik.com |

At the March meeting of the Foyle Family History Society, Rosemary Sibbett, the Vice President of the Northern Ireland Family History Society and former Belfast City Registrar, will be giving a talk on researching family genealogy. The talk, entitled 'My Family History - Filling in the Gaps' will focus on her own family research and the ways in which she was able to work around missing records to complete her family tree. This will be very useful information for family researchers. The talk will be followed by a question and answer session. The Foyle branch is actively looking to recruit new members and would encourage anyone who's interested in genealogy and local history to come along on the night and perhaps take their interest further. The Society is a voluntary non-profit making organisation encouraging an interest in family history. We hold monthly meetings at which there may be a talk, a research visit or a discussion of members' genealogy problems. We also hope to establish a small collection of local genealogical research material for members. It is also our intention to digitise and computerise some local archive material including newspaper Marriage and Death columns. The more people who join, the greater will be our potential for achieving these aims. Further information is available on the North of Ireland Family History Society website at www.nifhs.org. The NIFHS is a member of the Federation of Family History Societies. The talk will be held at the Central Library in Foyle Street at 7 PM on Monday the 1st of March. |
