Rural Derry urged to attend DARD briefing

People working and living in rural areas of Derry are being urged to attend an event in Eglinton this week which could help shape how their communities are treated by government in years to come.

The appeal was made by local Sinn Féin Martina Anderson who is bringing officials from the Agriculture department to Derry on Thursday.

“The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Michelle Gildernew is currently developing a rural white paper – the first time such an initiative has ever been taken in the North,” Ms. Anderson commented.

“The Rural White Paper provides a real opportunity to consider and address the needs of our rural communities across government and to help maximise the contribution made by rural areas to the region as a whole.

“The Minister has already indicated her willingness to working with local stakeholders in order to address the challenges facing rural areas and in identifying measures we can take to help ensure the future sustainability for our rural communities.

“This is an excellent opportunity for people in rural areas of Derry to make their needs known and help shape how their communities are governed in the future. All are welcome to attend and I am encouraging as many people as possible to come along.”

The meeting will take place at 11am on Thursday, November 19 in the Eglinton Community Hall, 40 Main Street, Eglinton, BT47 3AD.

Impact of the Conflict on the Lifford/Strabane Area – Research Project

Holywell Consultancy has been appointed by Donegal County Council, in partnership with Strabane District Council, to facilitate a process of engagement to assess the impact of the Conflict on the Strabane/Lifford area. This process involves a range of engagement techniques – focus groups, interviews, research analysis and this questionnaire.

The end result of the engagement with the local community, and other research elements, will be a report that will be used in partnership by Donegal County Council and Strabane District Council to attract much needed resources to the local area.

Holywell Consultancy is acutely aware that the Conflict of the last 40 years has impacted to some extent on us all. This process is an effort to gauge the impact that the Conflict has had on the areas of Strabane and Lifford and to identify opportunities for social, economic and physical regeneration which facilitates cross border and cross community reconciliation.  The research project is being supported by the PEACE III programme managed for the Special EU Programmes Body by the Donegal CDB Peace and Reconciliation Partnership.

Anyone who is interested can have their say in a number of ways. The most straightforward is to complete an online questionnaire available through the websites of both Councils (www.donegalcoco.ie and www.strabanedc.com) and Holywell Consultancy –

Little Orchids Needs Your Help - It’s People’s Millions Time!

Little Orchids Childrens Centre is a charitable organisation based in Gransha Park.  We provide therapeutic intervention, respite and support for pre-school children with special needs and their parents and carers.  We cater for children aged 3 months to 4 years and also work with parents providing one-to-one counselling and support.  Parents are also given the opportunity to receive training on various issues.

The centre has secured a place in the final of UTV / The Big Lottery funds Peoples Millions.  The prize, £50,000 will be used to create an outside sensory garden/children’s play area which will enhance the lives of young children and their parents.
This play area will be for the use of the children who attend the centre during their morning sessions but will be open to the general public during weekends and school holidays.
Little Orchids night in the spotlight is Monday 23rd November. A short video about this project and the competing project will also be shown on the news between
6.00pm and 6.30pm.  Voting is by telephone and lines will be open from 9am to midnight.  The number will be released by UTV, The Daily Mirror and on the website www.peoplesmillions.org.uk on the day.
This centre has so much to offer its community but for this project to be successful we need your help.  Please give us your vote.

Book Launch - Spirit of ’68: Beyond the Barricades

VOID, Patrick Street, Wednesday 25th November 2009 7.30 pm

Speaker: Peter Bunting, Assistant General Secretary, Irish Congress of Trade Unions

Supporting Artists: Poetry Chicks, with music by Connor Kelly

Book Synopsis:
The 1960s was a period of rapid economic and social change characterised by the emergence of independence movements in many Third World countries and of new social movements and new forms of cultural and counter-cultural politics, civil unrest and civil disobedience in the more economically developed societies. The issues and struggles that these different movements represented formed the context for the emergence of the Civil Rights Movement in Northern Ireland and their influence on local politics and social action leading up to and following the 5 October 1968 Civil Rights March in Derry is here examined. But international forces are always mediated through the local context and mediation generates lacunas, contradictions and compromises. How for example did traditional social movements such as the trade unions deal with civil rights demands in a communally divided society? Where were the voices of women and of gay people in the local civil rights discourse? How did the Civil Rights struggle come to be perceived as a campaign for Catholic rights? How did the Protestant population understand and experience it? These issues and others are addressed in the book’s different chapters, as is the legacy of civil rights struggles for working class people today.

Chapter contributors include: Eamonn McCann, Dermie McClenaghan, Goretti Horgan, Emmett O’ Connor, Terry Robson, Bernadette McAliskey, Míchaél Kerrigan and Jeanette. The book is edited by Pauline McClenaghan with a foreword by Peter Bunting.

European Emergency Number 112

The European Emergency Number 112 is used to contact emergency services free of charge all over the EU. However it is not currently accessible to the majority of disabled people.

Now this is set to change with the start of REACH112, a european wide initiative involving France, the Netherlands, Sweden, Spain and the UK. The project will introduce improved communication solutions for disabled people, allowing them direct access to emergency services.

Users will also be able to call each other in video, voice and text via the Internet and across national boundaries. It will also allow sign language users to communicate through remote interpreting services, and via other relay services, using text to talk to voice users.

Visit the website REACH112 or email the project coordinator Uberto Delprato - u.delprato@i4es.it
