Ministers announce funding package for victims and survivors

First Minister Peter Robinson, MP, MLA and deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness MP, MLA have announced that £1.8million will be made available to individual victims and survivors and their families over the Christmas period. In total over 5,000 individuals and families will benefit from the funding package.

The Leadership Voyage Conference in the North West

The Leadership Voyage Awards will take place on 4& 5 February 2010 in the Derry City Hotel.

The conference will focus on leading in tough times and is designed specially for sector leaders, charity chief executives, Northern Ireland Directors of UK and Ireland charities, senior staff and trustees in the third sector.  In these challenging times, we believe it is essential to give leaders in Northern Ireland’s third sector space to consider future trends and developments, skills to manage the forthcoming change and inspiration and passion to lead their organisation through change.

-Oona Chatterjee Reebok Human Rights Award Winner and Co-Executive Director of Make the Road New York, who will talk about leading a grass roots immigrant and low income rights organisation.

-Patricia Thompson who is a Metcalf Innovation Fellow from Toronto, talking about the resource that needs to be most protected and developed in these tough times.

-Sandy Houston, President of the Metcalfe Foundation who will give a funder’s perspective on leadership.

The conference also hear from many leading Northern Ireland figures including:

You can read more about the conference by visiting  www.conference.co3.bz

An exciting new addition to the conference, marking our 25th Anniversary, is the introduction of the Voyager Awards, which will recognize the great leadership that we have in this sector as well as highlighting the significant contribution the sector makes to the economy and society in Northern Ireland.  We are delighted that 4 leaders from the North West have been nominated!

We think this will be an important flagship leadership conference, and as such we are pleased to extend  our members rate to all our North West colleagues ( Cost: £150 Day Delegate –  2 days;  £245 Residential)

We hope that having sampled the experience, you will be encouraged to join the 200 plus other 3rd Sector leaders who benefit from CO3 membership!  To book a place at the special rate please contact Tracey McCreanor by email on tracey@co3.bz or tele. 028 9024   5356

Help us find BT's Internet Ranger

The BT Internet Ranger of the Year Award

We are looking for young people, up to the age of 16, who have used their ICT skills to help other people get online. If you know a young person who has done this, you can either nominate them or encourage them to nominate themselves. We are looking to have BT Internet Ranger award winners in each of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Each winner will receive an HP laptop plus £250 worth of IT vouchers, together with a certificate. A best of the national winners will receive an additional £250 worth of IT vouchers.

BT Internet Ranger Schools Award

This year, for the first time, a separate award will be made to a school or a group of schools who encourage young people, up to the age of 16, to use their ICT skills to help other people learn about computers and how to surf the internet.  This is a "forward looking" award scheme to promote future activity rather than the more traditional "backward looking" recognition for work which has already been carried out. The winning school or group of schools will receive £5,000.

Deadline for applications: Friday 15th January 2010

The online application form is available at:

Screening of ‘Bloody Sunday’

The Ancient Order of Hibernians’ (A.O.H) winter film festival, which had an historical theme throughout, will end this Sunday evening, in the Criterion Ballroom, 23 Foyle Street.

An invitation has been extended to over thirty families of those killed and wounded on January 30th 1972 in Derry’s Bogside during a civil rights demonstration against internment without charge or trial and the ill-treatment of detainees which began on the previous August 9th.  Other special invitations for the screening of ‘BLOODY SUNDAY’ have been accepted by Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Cooper, and the Irish film actor James Nesbitt, who played the central character, has been contacted. This film, written by the renowned director, Paul Greengrass, was inspired by the Derry-born author, Don Mullan, who penned the harrowing book, “Eyewitness Bloody Sunday”. The factual drama follows the civil rights leader, Ivan Cooper, through that fateful day in the history of our city. Other prominent civil rights leaders and veterans of that era have also been invited to attend.

An A.O.H. spokesman said, “This film is a remarkable account of what happened on that day, a day when the celebration of free expression turned into a terrible tragedy. All are welcome to attend this event. Screening commences at 8 p.m. and admission is free of charge”.

Festive tips and advice from nidirect

The government website nidirect has lots of useful advice to help people have a safer and potentially healthier Christmas.
There’s a lot to think about in the run-up to the yuletide celebrations, from buying presents to cooking the turkey, nights out partying to nights in with the relatives. It’s a busy time and www.nidirect.gov.uk, which has had more than 2.5million page impressions since its launch in March 2009, can help.

There is plenty of advice on how people can enjoy themselves without overdoing it. Also, if they leave the car at home, they can find out how to get home via public transport.
Most people will be buying presents for family and friends. Be careful not to get caught out by any scams this Christmas, and if too much has been spent, there’s advice on how to manage debt.
From wrapping paper to your real Christmas tree, find out what to do with all the recyclable waste once the turkey has been eaten and the presents opened.
Christmas should be a happy time and it’s important to take care around the home. There are many hidden dangers at Christmas, from faulty fairy lights to undercooked turkeys, and nidirect has tips on how to be safer around the home.
Christmas can also be a lonely time for some people. If anyone is feeling lonely or in despair, and needs to speak to someone confidentially, nidirect can point the way to the help that is available.

Finally, if anyone needs to access government services over the holiday period, some offices might be closed. But there are things that can be done online, from booking an MOT test to applying for a new passport, finding out what benefits you might be eligible for to making a complaint about unfair trading.
The nidirect website offers everyone with access to the internet an opportunity to easily look at government information or carry out transactions - all on the one site and at a time that suits them. They can save time by not having to visit a number of websites.
