Strengthening Families Programme

The Strengthening Families Program (SFP) is a nationally and internationally recognized parenting and family strengthening program for high-risk families. SFP is an evidence-based family skills training program found to significantly reduce problem behaviors, delinquency, and alcohol and drug abuse in children and to improve social competencies and school performance. Child maltreatment also decreases as parents strengthen bonds with their children and learn more effective parenting skills.

The Strengthening Families Program is a 14-session, science-based parenting skills, children's life skills, and family life skills training program specifically designed for high-risk families. Parents and children participate in SFP, both separately and together. Group Leader Manuals contain a complete lesson for every session. Parents' and children's Handbooks/ Handouts are also provided for every session.

Ages of Children

-Pre-school children, SFP 3-5 years, higher risk: SFP3-5 parallels SFP6-11 and can easily be delivered at the same time.

-Primary school children, SFP 6-11 years, higher risk: Use the original SFP6-11

-Junior secondary school students, SFP 10-14, general/universal population: Use the seven-session plus four booster session SFP10-14

-Middle – Senior Secondary  School, SFP 12-16, higher risk

The CAWT Alcohol Project Board will be holding a briefing session on this structured and internationally approved Programme on Jan 5th 2010 in the Boardroom of Gransha Park House, Gransha Park, Derry @ 2.00pm. The programmes developers Prof. Karol Kumpfer and Dr. Henry Whiteside will be present. This is an excellent opportunity for potential parties to the SFP delivery under the cross-border project to hear at first hand about SFP and also to question the developers directly.  The availability of such a programme locally can support the work of your organisation or agency.

If you would like to book a place at this workshop please contact:  Adrian Loughrey, Derry Healthy Cities, C/O Nurses Homes, Altnagelvin Hospital, Glenshane Road, L/Derry.  Tel: 028 71611384.  Email: info@derryhc.com    before Monday 4th January. Please note places are limited.

Community Involvement in Planning Hospital Services

In recent years there have been major changes in the organisation of health and social care services on both sides of the border. Many of the services based in border region hospitals will be – or have already been – moved to new locations. Some of these services are now being delivered in community settings. Some services have been centralised in larger regional hospitals.

-How have these changes affected your community?

-Do you know the reasons for the reorganisation of hospital services?

-Do you agree with the changes?

-Do you think hospital services or other health services could or should be delivered on a cross border basis?

-How can local communities influence the decision-making process?

The Centre for Cross Border Studies (CCBS) has been awarded funding from the EU INTERREG IVA Programme to carry out research about how community involvement has influenced planning around hospital services in the border area. Alongside this research is a study now being carried out on behalf of CCBS by consultants Horwath Bastow Charleton to explore where hospital services could be located to most effectively meet the needs of people living in the border region. As part of this research, CCBS is visiting a number of border communities to gather the views of local people.  Come and have your say. Please complete the registration form attached and return it to:

Mince Pies & Measurement

Two well known Northern Ireland social enterprises, Work West from Belfast and Cúnamh ICT from Derry, have come together to roll out a new social impact measurement tool for the sector.

Social Impact Tracker is a resource that social enterprises and voluntary and community organisations can use to manage their client and project information. The system is pre-set with monitoring forms and templates for funders such as ESF/DEL, the Community Relations Council, and Peace III. It can save your group days in administration terms as you roll out your projects. The system can also link your organisation’s activities to your social objectives, allowing you to take your project monitoring to the next level and also start reporting on your social impact. Work West have used the Social Impact Tracker Pro version for the last 18 months in their work in the enterprise support arena. Rachel Marshall, Programme Manager at Work West says, “The tool has proved to be a great resource for us to manage our non-financial programme information and track the distance travelled by participants on our initiatives. We have partnered with Cúnamh ICT to help promote the tool to other groups across NI who could also benefit from it. There was a bit of work involved in setting up the database, but now it’s up and running it saves us so much time”. Peter MacCafferty, Managing Director of Cúnamh ICT, who developed the tool is delighted to have formed a partnership with Work West. He states, “Work West are a key support… Work West use the system themselves so they understand it from a user’s point of view and can help other groups embed it within their organisations and to understand how the outcome measurement functions of the tool work.”

To see the Social Impact Tracker tool for yourself, come and join Work West from 10.30am on Thursday 17th December for a coffee morning, mince pies and a demonstration in the new Work West Social Economy Village, Hannahstown Hill, Belfast. For further information visit www.socialimpacttracker.org or contact Lynsey Cameron at Work West T:028 9061 0826 or Peter at Cúnamh ICT on T:028 71 308 166

Trócaire marks ten years of ethical Christmas gifts

Trócaire has launched its Christmas gift campaign marking ten years of ethical Christmas gifts from people in
Ireland to people in the developing world.
Since the campaign began people in
Ireland, north and south, have bought over 600,000 gifts that have changed the lives of over a million people living in the world’s poorest countries.

The gifts are real gifts for real people, such as Burmese fishermen whose lives were devastated by a cyclone last year. Thousands of fishermen and their families were left without an income. One of the gifts this year will replace boats and nets for these fishermen and enable them to rebuild their lives, earn a living and feed their families.
The gifts give families a helping hand out of chronic poverty and every gift bought here finds a very special home with a poor family overseas.

Global gifts range in price from £9 to £180  including school lunches for children in Zimbabwe (£9), chickens for families in East Africa (£13), vegetable gardens for Indian families (£22), life-saving food for families in Mozambique (£30), goats for families in Zimbabwe (£40), education for young people in Burma (£63), clean water for people around the world (£90), fishing boats and nets for fishermen in Burma (£135) and houses for families living in desperate conditions (£180).

To purchase a Trocaire Global Gift this Christmas, or see them in action, log onto www.trocaire.org/globalgift or call Freephone 0800 912 1200 (1850 408 408 in ROI).   The gifts are also available to purchase locally in Veritas (Derry & Letterkenny), The Holy Shop (Derry & Strabane), Café
del Mundo, Café Nervosa, An Gaeláras, Void and the Gasyard.

Beware of buying fake goods online

With Christmas shopping in full swing, a warning has been issued by Consumerline about the dangers of buying counterfeit goods online.
Consumerline, Northern Ireland's consumer telephone helpline, has received an increasing number of complaints from members of the public who have bought fake goods online. The most common complaints are about GHD hair straighteners, UGG boots and jewellery, however consumers have also reported buying a wide variety of fake goods ranging from shoes to iPods.

Stephen Thompson, Manager of Consumerline, highlighted the potential risks. He said: “Consumers should always check for a postal address on a website. If there no postal address, then the trader's location is unknown. They may even be as far away as China, making it extremely difficult to seek any form of redress, if the goods purchased are in fact counterfeit.
If consumers are thinking about making a purchase from a relatively new website they should exercise extreme caution, especially if prices are low and website requests pre-payment. Also, negative feedback or comments from other consumers often acts as a warning sign and there may be good reason to be cautious.

Concluding, Stephen Thompson advised consumers that if in doubt they should use the ‘Ask Howard’ search facility on the European Consumer Centre website (http://www.ukecc.net). He said: “The ‘Ask Howard’ feature will research a website for you and help you decide whether to use it. It will research when the website in question was registered and it will perform a Google search for feedback from other consumers. It can also be useful to do a ‘who is’ search to see where the website is registered. One site where you can do this is http://whois.domaintools.com”

Consumers who suspect they may have purchased counterfeit goods, should report it to Consumerline on tel: 0845 600 6262 or tel: 028 9025 3900 or log onto the Consumerline website at http://www.consumerline.org
