The Committee on the Administration of Justice (CAJ) will be running FREE training on the Bill of Rights in Belfast on 9th September 2008. Training will run from 10am – 4pm, lunch included This training will cover: What are human rights? What is a Bill of Rights? What will a Bill of Rights for NI mean? How do I get involved in a Bill of Rights? And an update on where the process is of getting a Bill of Rights – final advice will be given to the Secretary of State this December so don’t miss out! Participants will receive an information pack on the Bill of Rights and CAJ’s new report ‘The Best Bill of Rights – a guide’. Funding for Demonstration Programme of Community Food Initiatives
Safefood and the Healthy Food for All Project are looking for applications for funding from community/voluntary organisations running food projects throughout Ireland (north and south). There is potentially £60,000 over three years available for a project that fits their criteria. Closing date for applications is 30th September 2008 and the details can be found on the Healthy Food For All website including the application form and Q&A’s. The purpose of this funding is to establish a Demonstration Programme of Community Food Initiatives (CFIs) on the island of Ireland. CFIs are projects that improve the availability and accessibility of healthy food for low-income groups at a local level, using a community development approach. Each CFI will receive annual funding over a period of three years to set up, manage and sustain a project. Funding will be provided on an incremental basis over the three year period. An Introduction to Employment Equality Legislation This seminar at NICVA on 25 September 2008 is suitable for all employees in the voluntary sector seeking an introduction to equality law. Common themes such as direct and indirect discrimination will be explored as well as the unique requirements of Northern Ireland’s Fair Employment Legislation. By the end of the workshop the attendees should be aware of: The groups protected under employment equality legislation in Northern Ireland; The key elements of this legislation; The responsibilities placed on both employers and employees under this legislation. Financial Training for non financial managers Do you have some financial responsibility within your organisation but haven’t had any formal training? Would you like to feel more confident when dealing with financial matters? Finance for non financial managers will improve your knowledge of finance through topics such as accounting language, income and expenditure accounts, and SORP 2005. It is aimed at managers who are involved in some aspect of finance within their organisation. This two day course takes place on 9 and 16 September 2008. Cost: £160 NICVA members, £230 non members. Transform your helpline service with these courses Telephone Helplines Association is holding one day courses in Belfast this September for helpline workers. Want to make sure that new helpline workers get a head start with the basic skills they need to handle calls efficiently and effectively? The Level 1 Foundation Skills course on 9 September 2008 fits the bill. For those with some helpline experience who want to cut through common challenges confidently and assertively but with sensitivity, the Level 2 Developing Skills on 10 September will help. If your helpline aims to provide emotional support, the Level 3 course on 11 September will build the additional knowledge and skills required to do this effectively in a way that protects your callers, your people and your service. All courses start at 10.30 and finish at 4.30 and are held at NICVA, 61 Duncairn Gardens, Belfast. Amma Ireland presents Charity Holistic Fair
Indian Community Centre, 86 Clifton Street, Belfast, Saturday 23rd & Sunday 24th August. Amma’s group in the Belfast area are organising a charity holistic day. Creating an open peaceful environment, where people from the community can take time to ‘Relax, relate and rejuvenate’. A range of holistic therapies are on offer, including, massage, reiki and reflexology to name but a few. Each therapy aims to treat the whole person; body, mind and soul and offer a listening ear to anyone who may desire it. Amma’s multi-faceted organisation reaches out to help as many people as possible. Inspirational projects in social care, education and healthcare provide shining examples for many other organisations to follow. Funds raised internationally enable the immense work to continue. By attending the holistic day, it is not only yourself who is being helped but others also. A Two-Day Introduction to Motivational Interviewing Workshop OiWillo Training & Practice Development is delighted to again facilitate this very successful Motivational Interviewing training workshop in the Millennium Centre, 400 Springfield Road Belfast on Wednesday 3rd and Thursday 4th September 2008. This initial two day practice development workshop, led by Glenn Hinds, a member of the international Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT), is an introduction to the clinical method of motivational interviewing. It is designed to help practitioners get started in developing their competence in MI. It will be of particular interest to practitioners who are offering support to individuals and families who are experiencing difficulties engaging in ‘traditional’ service structures or those assisting people who wish to change their smoking, alcohol or drug use, diet, exercise routine, criminal behaviour, medication maintenance or any other health or life style behaviour. Barefeet Zambia in Derry!
A young and dynamic theatre group from Zambia is coming to Derry to perform and create spaces to engage with local community groups. There will be workshops organized for groups or individuals to come along and have a taste of Zambian culture in a fun and accessible way! The workshops will be on Tuesday 19th August at the Liberty Consortium Playtrail, 15 Racecourse Road, at the following times: 9am – Workshop one – Children aged 10 – 14 11am – Workshop Two – Young people aged 14 – 18 1pm – Workshop Three – Young people with special needs 3pm – Workshop Four – Young people and adults 18+ Advance booking is essential and we would request that you would make a donation of £5 for participation in the workshop as Barefeet are dependant on fundraising. Barefeet Theatre will also be staging a performance at The Playhouse, St Columb’s Hall on Wednesday 19th August at 8pm. Friday 26th to Sunday 28 September 2008, Emmaus Retreat Centre, Swords, Co Dublin (www.emmauscentre.ie) For: Youth leaders and youth workers (working directly with young people aged 13 – 25 years) interested in running a Causeway Youth or Contact/Exchange who are looking for partners. Aims of Contact Making seminar: To provide contact making opportunities for youth leaders and youth workers form Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales. To give information about exchanges and other funding opportunities within the causeway programme. To help participants to develop projects & ideas for exchanges with young people To assist participants to prepare quality Causeway applications for the 1st November 2008 deadline. To provide the opportunity to learn new skills and share your experiences. There is a €50 nominal fee payable by all participants, while Léargas will cover the accommodation (room sharing), food and training costs for all participants. Participants from the Republic of Ireland are required to pay for their own travel to the event. Participants will be taken through a series of practical activities giving them greater insight into good practice in Causeway youth exchanges. Participants will learn the basics in developing a quality programme of activities for an exchange, and how to present it in a funding application.
