New Children’s fiction from Northern Ireland - Open call for writers and illustrators
Have you ever wanted to write or illustrate a book for children? Do you like children’s stories?
If so, our year-long programme is for you. YES! Publications in partnership with The Verbal Arts Centre, are offering this programme to members of the public designed to support, mentor and encourage amateur writers and illustrators through workshops and master classes. This project will provide an exciting opportunity for writers and illustrators to create new children’s books and get published. This project has been funded by The National Lottery through the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.
There are very few children’s books emanating from this part of the world. In fact most children’s books have very little relevance to children in Northern Ireland in terms of the landscapes, names and themes. We want to address this by creating a new type of children’s literature which is - of this place - the language will be recognisable and the visual landscapes will reflect here. We are aware of the challenges this also creates, if a story is too colloquial it immediately limits a wider readership. However, told sensitively and with a strong enough message all good stories transcend these limitations.
Building on our successful programme in 2009, we are inviting submissions from anyone interested in taking part in this project. From March 2010 – December 2010, our selected group will have the unique opportunity of being actively supported, advised and nurtured in the development of their work. YES! Publications will manage and deliver a range of workshops, publication debuts, master classes and readings/showcases for the group. It is our intention that from this incubation programme new creative material will be produced which we will then publish. This project will be a platform for the creation of new children’s fiction emanating from Northern Ireland.
The project has been designed to suit people who work, have family or daytime commitments (most sessions will be timetabled in the evenings and at weekends).
If you wish to be considered for this programme please submit sample/s of your work (writing or illustrations) no more than six A4 pages, along within one A4 page telling us why you want to take part in this programme. Please also supply all contact details. A selection panel will consider all submissions and applicants will be informed before the end of March 2010.
Deadline for submissions Monday 15 March 2010. Please send submissions to: By Post: YES! Publications, 10-12 Bishop Street, Derry/Londonderry, BT48 6PW Tel 028 71261941 www.yespublications.org Or email: yes@yespublications.org |

Pilots Row and Eden Place Art Centre will host an exhibition featuring the art and photography of three Americans on 18 February. These three Americans also happen to be siblings and proof that it’s not too late to do what you love. This small sample of their art work includes photography, painting and quilting. The idea for a joint show came about when they were talking about how great it was that even though they had reached an age that most people stop doing any work; they were embarking on new creative careers and were encouraging one another in these endeavours. Instead of there being any sibling rivalry, they were enjoying sibling ‘revelry’. The opening for Sibling Revelry will take place on Thursday 18 February 7.30 p.m. at Eden Place Arts Centre, Rossville Street, Derry, BT48 6LP For more info contact : Judi on 71 269418 or email judi_edenplaceartscentre@yahoo.co.uk Exhibition continues until 25th February |
