The Leadership Voyage Awards will take place on 4 & 5 February 2010 in the Derry City Hotel.

The conference will focus on leading in tough times and is designed specially for sector leaders, charity chief executives, Northern Ireland Directors of UK and Ireland charities, senior staff and trustees in the third sector.  In these challenging times, we believe it is essential to give leaders in Northern Ireland’s third sector space to consider future trends and developments, skills to manage the forthcoming change and inspiration and passion to lead their organisation through change.

The conference will play host to a number of renowned international speakers from the USA and Canada.  These include:

-Oona Chatterjee, Reebok Human Rights Award Winner and Co-Executive Director of Make the Road New York, who will talk about leading a grass roots immigrant and low income rights organisation.

-Patricia Thompson, who is a Metcalf Innovation Fellow from Toronto, talking about the resource that needs to be most protected and developed in these tough times.

-Sandy Houston, President of the Metcalfe Foundation who will give a funder’s perspective on leadership.

The conference will also hear from many leading Northern Ireland figures including:

-Margaret Ritchie, MLA and Minister for Department of Social Development

-Angela McGowan, Northern Bank Economist

There will also be a chance to hear from recently appointed chair of the Big Lottery NI, Frank Hewitt.

You can read more about the conference by visiting  www.conference.co3.bz

An exciting new addition to the conference, marking our 25th Anniversary, is the introduction of the Voyager Awards, which will recognise the great leadership that we have in this sector as well as highlighting the significant contribution the sector makes to the economy and society in Northern IrelandWe are delighted that 4 leaders from the North West have been nominated!

We think this will be an important flagship leadership conference, and as such we are pleased to extend  our members rate to all our North West colleagues ( Cost: £150 Day Delegate –  2 days;  £245 Residential)

We hope that having sampled the experience, you will be encouraged to join the 200 plus other 3rd Sector leaders who benefit from CO3 membership!  To book a place at the special rate please contact Tracey McCreanor by email on tracey@co3.bz or tele: 028 9024  5356

Review of effectiveness of Disability Duties as per Section 49 of the Disability Discrimination Act 1996

The Equality Commission for Northern Ireland will soon publish its review of the effectiveness of the Disability Duties as per Section 49 of the Disability Discrimination Act 1996 (as amended by Article 5 of the Disability Discrimination (NI) Order 2006).

This letter is to advise you of the publication and to give you advance notice of a planned launch event and workshops on 10 February 2010

The review report entitled “Effectiveness of the Disability Duties Review Report” provides an evaluation of progress to date by public authorities and the Commission in implementing the duties.  The review report will be available from 1 January 2010 via our website www.equalityni.org

The Commission will be formally launching the review report by hosting a stakeholder event on 10 February 2010We will issue full details, including how to register for the event in January.  We hope that this advance notification will allow you and/or your stakeholders to reserve the date in your diary.

Your views are important as we seek to better implement the Disability Duties and so alongside presenting a summary of the review report, we shall be hosting a number of workshops to explore the general findings and discuss how best to implement the Disability Duties, taking into account the recommendations of the report.

As well as hearing the views of representatives from the public sector and the voluntary and community sector, the views of disabled people are particularly welcome.  I would therefore encourage you to circulate this notice widely and would ask you in particular to encourage disabled people to attend to ensure their contribution to the discussions on the day.

If you have any queries at this time please contact Chris Towell via switchboard on 02890 500 600 or email: research@equalityni.org

Foyle Family History Society event postponed

Tonight’s talk by Mr Randal Gill has been postponed due to the adverse weather conditionsit has been rescheduled for Monday February 1st at 7 PM in the Central Library.

Mr Randal Gill, the President of the North of Ireland Family History Society, will be giving a talk on 'Tracing Your Family History' at the monthly meeting of the Foyle Family History Society. He previously gave this talk in October but a large number of people had to be turned away due to capacity problems at the Central Library. Randal is returning to the City particularly to accommodate those who were disappointed and those who could not attend on the night.

Coming from a long established expert genealogist and historian, this will be an interesting talk for anyone wanting to trace their family history. The newly established Foyle branch is actively looking to recruit new members and would encourage anyone who's interested in genealogy and local history to come along on the night and perhaps take their interest further. The Society is a voluntary non-profit making organisation encouraging an interest in family history. We hold monthly meetings at which there may be a talk, a research visit or a discussion of members' genealogy problems. We also hope to establish a small collection of local genealogical research material for members. It is also our intention to digitise and computerise some local archive material including newspaper Marriage and Death columns. The more people who join, the greater will be our potential for achieving these aims.

Further information is available on the North of Ireland Family History Society website at www.nifhs.org  The NIFHS is a member of the Federation of Family History Societies.

Anyone with disabilities who needs to reserve a seat, or those who wish to ensure a seat, should leave their name with the Central Library staff.

Holocaust Memorial Week: Visit to Omagh to hear Holocaust Survivor 27th Jan 2010

'Holocaust Memorial Week' is held annually in January to remember victims and survivors of the Holocaust.  Omagh District Council's Good Relations section, in conjunction with the Holocaust Educational Trust, have organised a speaker, Joanna Millan, who survived the Holocaust, to share her story of surviving the Holocaust.  Derry City Council Community Relations Officers will be running a free bus trip to this event.

Joanna was born Bela Rosenthal in August 1942 in Berlin.  Her father and mother both died in separate concentration camps, leaving Bela, age 2, orphaned and alone in Theresienstadt, a concentration camp 50 miles outside of Prague.  On 3rd May 1945, the Red Cross took over control of the camp and Bela was liberated by the Russians.  After the liberation Bela, along with five other surviving orphans, was flown to England in British bomber planes.  Eventually adopted by a Jewish couple living in London, today Bela is a magistrate and speaks regularly about her experiences of the Holocaust and anti-semitism.

If you are interested in hearing more of her story you may wish to book for the following event:
