North-West Community Network – AGM
The Junction, 12 noon - 2.30pm, Fri 19 March 2010 (Lunch provided)
Community & Voluntary sector groups are invited to attend this year’s Network AGM. All are invited though only existing member organisations are entitled to vote or be elected to the incoming Executive Committee. We also welcome attendance and participation by colleagues and partners from other sectors - only through cross-sectoral engagement can we seek to deliver the best outcomes for all of our communities.
Membership call will take place in April 2010 - if in the meantime you wish to take up and/or renew membership for 2010-11, please complete and return the attached Membership Invoice (nominations towards the Executive Committee must bear the signature of a representative of your organisation).
This year’s AGM will feature discussion informed by presentations from the new initiative, Platform for Change, which describes itself as “a voice for citizens of Northern Ireland who believe that now is the time for a new politics focused on the common good. It is a place for people who feel there is more to be gained from positive politics and want to be involved.”
Officially launched last week in Belfast, and headed by, among others, Dr. Robin Wilson (policy researcher/analyst) and actor Nuala McKeever (of Hole In The Wall Gang fame), Platform for Change “believes there is a public appetite for a positive political agenda which does not endlessly replay arguments linked to Northern Ireland’s troubles… Citizens need to feel that they have a genuine say in government.”
If interested in attending the AGM/Discussion, it is important that you register this with Neola at the Network as soon as possible and no later than Mon 15 March. Tel: 028 7127 9090 / email: neola@nwcn.org |

Charity Finance Charity Awards
Nominations for the Charity Awards are invited under a number of broad categories of activity, covering areas of impact across the full range of the voluntary sector. Recognising these achievements helps to spread best practice throughout the sector and draws attention to the breadth of talent, commitment and expertise that exists within voluntary activity in the UK.
Nominations will be accepted from any charity in the UK. Shortlisted nominees will be invited to the awards ceremony in London on Thursday 12 June 2010 where the winners in each category will be announced and honoured.
The ten categories for the Charity Awards 2010 are: Animals and the environment; Arts, culture and heritage; Children and youth; Disability; Education and training; Grantmaking; Healthcare and medical research; International aid and development; Research, advice and support; Social care, welfare and religion.
More information on the hallmarks of excellence are available on the website.
Nominations for an Outstanding Achievement Award In addition to the charity award winners, there is an Outstanding Achievement Award to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to excellence in charities over time. As the underlying principle of the awards is management excellence, the judges are particularly looking for nominations for individuals whose professional lives have been integrated to a substantial degree with charities. While recognising that inspiring contributions are made by private individuals who devote themselves to charitable work, the purpose of these awards is to identify contributions to the management of charities as organisations, leading to improved services to beneficiaries. It is not necessary to have worked in charities for a lifetime to be nominated for this award.
Successful nominees will have many positive characteristics, including the following: Innovation: Someone who has taken the management of charities in positive new directions, or advanced achievement in the sector by applying concepts originating in other sectors. Inspiration: Someone who stands as an example of commitment to excellence, perhaps having demonstrated leadership and achievement in a variety of contexts within the charity sector. Influence: Someone who has played a significant part in promoting excellence in charities, and represented a positive image of the sector to a wider audience
The independent judging panel will take a range of factors into account when choosing winners.
Use the link on the website (below) to submit your nomination, describing a management initiative which has improved the delivery of your organisation's charitable objectives.

Working Towards a Way Forward is targeted at the community and voluntary sectors and has been convened by the Community Foundation for Northern Ireland at the Europa Hotel on Thursday March 25.
Also aimed at those in government with responsibility for supporting community development and delivering services, a platform will be provided to discuss sustainable development challenges confronting policy makers, managers and community activists in a time of significant change.
Charlie Fisher, Observatory Facilitator at the Community Foundation, is encouraging interested parties to get registered well in advance of the event. He said; “Already we’ve finalised our platform of speakers for the conference and 'think tanks' will be organised to provide direct feedback to decision makers. “On the agenda will be the proposed new infrastructure for public administration and the introduction of community planning, the challenging economic context and a reduction in funding available to support community development. “Numbers are very limited so we’re encouraging those wishing to attend to contact us immediately”.
"This is an opportunity for you or the organization you represent to make their voices heard, as we work towards a way forward for Northern Ireland’s third sector." To book a place at Working Towards a Way Forward, contact Elaine Canavan at the Community Foundation on ecanavan@communityfoundationni.org or call 028 71 371547. |
