Age Concern Derry Good Neighbour Award 2010
Do you know someone who is an exceptional neighbour to an older person? If so, why not nominate them for the Age Concern Derry Good Neighbour Award 2010!
The Age Concern Derry “Good Neighbour Award” encourages people to care for their older community members and aims to promote community spirit by recognising those people who have made positive contributions to the lives of those older people living in our community.
Everyone likes good neighbours and Age Concern Derry would like you to tell them about yours. Have they helped out at a time of crisis? Do they help you with your garden or do the shopping for you when you are unable to do so? Maybe they have just been there when you need someone to talk to or running simple errands, including regular visits, helping with household chores, providing transport for outings to church or shopping or simply giving some time and company to an older person living alone. The award is confined to the Derry City Council area, and is a chance for older people to pay tribute to someone special, either adult or young person, whose kindness has made a real difference to their life. If you know someone, or a group of people, who deserve recognition for the help or devotion they show to an older neighbour, why not nominate them for this prestigious award and let them know that their input into an older person’s life is appreciated and an example to us all! Any school, group, family or individual can be nominated!
The Good Neighbour Award will be presented at a Presentation Evening on Monday 8th March 2010! To obtain nomination forms, please contact Age Concern Derry, Malvern House, Chapel Road, Londonderry, BT47 2AN or telephone 028 71 347 478. The closing date for nomination forms is Friday 26th February 2010! |

Promoting Accessible Rural Childminding
NICMA have recently been awarded funding from DARD through the Rural Childcare Programme to develop a Rural Childminding Project. The project will last until 31 March 2011 and targets 15 different rural areas identified as being in specific need of additional childcare provision.
As it is vital that we bring together all interested parties in rural childcare in order to inform and roll out the project I would like to invite interested individuals to sit on a multi-agency ‘local Rural Task group’. There will be an overarching REGIONAL Working group, providing some strategic direction as well as four local Task groups bringing local issues to the table. The commitment is not huge - we are asking you to attend a meeting approximately 2 hours 3 - 4 times throughout the project. We will be holding the meetings in a central rural location.
The first meetings are as follows: Northern Area - Loughguile Community Centre - Thursday 18 February 2010 - 2.00 -4.00pm. South Eastern Area - NICMA Office, Newtownards, Tuesday 23 February 2010 - 11.00am - 1.00pm. Western Area - Newtownstewart 2000 Centre - Thursday 25 February 2010 - 11.00am - 1.00pm. Southern Area - Armagh Teachers Centre - Tuesday 2 March 2010 - 11.00am - 1.00pm
If you wish to discuss this further please contact Bridget Nodder or Maeve Milne on 07855 144138 or email maeve.milne@nicma.org |

You are warmly invited to a review of the Maiden City Festival at the Guildhall, 7 – 9pm, Friday 5th February 2010. An evening of music, dance and drama from the 2009 Maiden City Festival. Refreshments and food will be served. RSVP by email to: info@maidencityfestival.com or call/text: 07713 273011. www.maidencityfestival.com
The Maiden City Festival is a flagship celebration of diversity which takes place the first week of August each year. Of course, early August is a time when traditionally, locally, many are on holiday. To provide an opportunity for the Festival organisers to engage with as many as possible we have organised this review of the Maiden City Festival 2009, a revue style evening of music, dance and drama. The Festival embraces history & heritage, community and a diversity of performances. Originally it provided us with an opportunity to open the doors of the Apprentice Boys and the Memorial Hall to everyone. The Festival now includes many venues and partners within and around the Walls, working and celebrating diversity together. We would greatly appreciate the opportunity this review event offers to meet with you, showcase our Festival, and look forward to greater engagement in the future. |

“Imagine the scene for just one second, youth workers from many different countries mixing together with local practitioners, all with a diverse range of skills and talents sharing in a cacophony of colour, noise, debate, discussion, music, arts, dance, food and so on and so on for a limited period only with a focus on sharing and learning from each other but in doing so creating a family and young person friendly atmosphere and in a range of unique settings, both indoor and outdoor making for a most wonderful, unique, treasured and beloved spectacle not to mention being a significant boost to the local economy, year on year.”
‘YouthFest’ is arguably the first ever-known festival organised for youth workers only. It proposes bringing together 200 youth workers, (100 local and 100 from overseas) to celebrate all that is positive in youth work. Practitioners from twenty countries will meet and engage with youth workers, young leaders and children and young people from right across Northern Ireland in a mass celebration of youth work practice but most importantly right here in Derry Londonderry.
YouthFest is a series of organised events and activities designed to illustrate all that is good in youth work, to raise its profile to a wider audience, demonstrate best practice, provide a platform for practitioners to share learning and exchange views and provide opportunities for children and young people to engage in activities that will promote the development of their skills and knowledge alongside a greater awareness of and use for inter-cultural dialogue.
There are ten themes: Sports and Outdoor Education, Music & Dance, ICT & Media, Drama & Theatre, Humour, The Arts, Poetry, Film, Food and Circus Skills. Activities include performances (Indoor and Outdoor), presentations, exhibits, workshops and a conference
The rationale behind YouthFest is varied but among the many reasons for its development is that there currently exists no festival for youth workers only, there is a distinct lack of interaction between youth workers in Northern Ireland and the rest of Europe, youth workers have many hidden talents that go unnoticed, it presents an opportunity to share and exchange practice and has the potential to become the ‘key social networking event’ of the year for youth workers from all over Europe.
YouthFest Aims to bring together practitioners from all over the world in a common celebration of youth work practice and in doing so acknowledge the talent and skills that exists among the broad youth work community so as to promote greater awareness of and respect for the youth work profession among local publics whilst providing space for youth workers, young leaders and young people to engage in shared learning experiences.
Fergal Barr who is heading up the project has been involved in hosting over 300 youth work practitioners from more than 31 countries over the last 11 years. Programmes have explored a range of themes including conflict, young men’s work, environment, participation, human rights and citizenship to name but a few.
An information meeting on YouthFest will be held at The Junction, Bishop Street on Wednesday 3 February at 2pm. If you wish to attend or you’re interested in becoming involved in the event please contact Fergal on 079 4459 5864 or mail him at thekingisalive@hotmail.com. |
