Changing the Conversation - Listening to voices of this generation

Thirty years ago, in 1979, two organisations, the Community Foundation for Northern Ireland and Co-operation Ireland, were established to help build a better society for everyone by creating and improving better relations between all our communities.

Since then, both organisations have worked tirelessly to improve the lives of people at local community level and to promote peace and positive change on our island.

Thirty years on and a generation later, both organisations want to hear the views of the young people who have grown up with us - those thirty years old and under, who are or will become the next generation of decision makers.

Changing the conversation is a two week long programme where organisations, groups and individuals are encouraged to organise events, promote discussion and frame debates around the issues relevant to them today, their vision of the future and the challenges and hopes that will impact on their lives in the years to come.

Both the Community Foundation and Co-operation Ireland realise the importance of giving young people a chance to be heard so we’re giving them this opportunity to make their views known.  The Changing the Conversation Programme has been developed by both organisations, but we hope it will gain a momentum of its own, with a wide range of organisations and groups of people bringing suggestions as to how they would like to either facilitate, or engage in the conversation.  We see the programme as being about people making connections - not about attending conferences.

If your organisation, group, sporting club or social circle would be interested in arranging a conversation between 12th - 22nd April 2010, please let us know by Friday 19th March.  There are a number of small grants available

(Up to £150) to help facilitate events or activities.

Contact Martin Flynn, Communications Officer at the Community Foundation, with your event ideas on

028 9040 8702 or by email on mflynn@communityfoundationni.org

Please consider joining us in changing the conversation.  We look forward to hearing from you.

Women Building Bridges  - International Women’s Day 2010 - Exhibition 8th – 27th March 2010

The Art Exhibition and Workshop Programme Women Building Bridges celebrating International Women’s Day 2010 showcases women’s artworks from the city and beyond,  promoting community bridge building and demonstrating a willingness and capacity to engage with ‘difference’ and diversity. International Women’s Day itself offering a communicative platform for women, the Exhibition is accompanied by a discussion programme – allowing connections between women, current issues for women and women’s perspectives to be explored.

Discussion Forums include:

Below the Radar: a session for female youth and community workers and other women working with the lesbian gay and Bisexual women in issues of invisibility. (Please see below for further information).

Women and the Sex Industry: a session for women, focusing in on the social injustice of sex trafficking. (Please see below for further information).

Community Bridge Building: an open session aimed at women who have been active in community bridge building which asks the question – how does space support sustainable relationships and is physical regeneration and re imaging the easy part?

A Her-story Tour is also being piloted

Women Building Bridges theme was chosen in response to the building of a new footbridge (Peace Bridge) which will connect the West and East Banks of the city, and the project is funded by Derry City Council Community Relations Programme.  See www.thewomenscentre.co.uk for Programme Info.
