TalkTalk Digital Heroes Awards 2009 now live
The TalkTalk Digital Heroes Awards have now been launched in conjunction with Citizens Online; they are the only awards of their kind in the UK. They reward 12 individuals, one from each region of the UK, who are doing outstanding work using digital technology to bring about positive social change and improve the lives of people in their local communities. Martha Lane-Fox
said: “Hidden away in charities and local community groups across the
UK are countless
unsung digital heroes who recognise the positive impact the internet can
have on everyday people’s lives. Eleven of the Digital Heroes winners will win £5,000 to put towards enhancing their digital project, with one overall winner receiving a grand prize of £10,000. All 12 winners get free broadband from TalkTalk for 18 months. You can find out more information on the awards and how to enter at: www.talktalk.co.uk/digitalheroes. A new BBC campaign launches in September called My Story - it is an invitation to people across the UK to write a personal story in their own words and to submit it to the national BBC My Story website. This is an unprecedented search across the UK for true life stories. The stories once submitted to the website can be entered into a storywriting competition and from the thousands submitted a selection will be shortlisted for publication and television promotion. Stories can be anything from 300 to 2,500 words and must not have been published before. For us, working with the Learning and Community sectors in Northern Ireland provides a unique opportunity to capture those untold stories across the North West. We would very much like to partner with community groups, women’s groups, history and story telling/writing groups to maximise entries to the website from Northern Ireland and of course to hear your stories. As there is a writing competition element to My Story - the timescale of the campaign is short - it launches in September (during Adult Learners Week) and entries to the website close in December. We have no doubt many budding writers will happily put work forward but it is the harder to reach groups we would especially like to target as we have done before with BBC Raw. It would be amazing to have stories from people who have never written before - after all, everyone has a story. There are support materials available on the website link below and we hope to run workshops across Northern Ireland for facilitators in September. There is a really helpful magazine which is in development and will be available from August through local libraries. So many people in Northern Ireland are familiar with the hugely successful 'Days Like This' which airs daily on Radio Ulster - My Story now seeks to capture those life moments across England,Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland in written form.
