Regional Food Programme re-opens

The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) and Invest NI have temporarily reopened the local Regional Food Programme (NIRFP) for 2009/10.
A limited amount of funding is still available after the first two tranches and DARD will be accepting applications up to 12 noon on Wednesday 11 November 2009.  Any applications must be for projects that will be completed by 31 March 2010.
The aim of the Programme is to promote quality regional food and to help increase its consumption by provision of financial support in five key areas namely:
· Regional fairs/shows;
· Information programmes;
· Award ceremonies;
· Seminars/ workshops; and
· Market intelligence/research.

State Aid restrictions mean that only agri-food groups representative of producers and/or processors who have local membership, registered charities or regional development agencies can apply.
Within the last three years, the Northern Ireland Regional Food Programme (NIRFP) has supported a wide range of initiatives which have not only promoted local quality produce, but have also led to greater collaboration across the entire local agri-food sector.

An application form for funding can be downloaded from http://www.dardni.gov.uk/index/publications/pubs-dard-grants-and-funding/nirfp_2009-10.htm or obtained from:
Ms Una Hollywood, Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Room 516A, Dundonald House

Secondary Schools Log on to Net Survey

Ilex, the urban regeneration company in consultation with Foyle Learning Community is undertaking a survey of schoolchildren between 11 and 18 years to determine the level of access to digital media on-line. The survey will determine whether there are significant inequalities in accessing broadband in specific areas of the city and seek to gain information on use of digital services in homes across the city. It will also help Ilex compare local usage levels with those of other regions in the UK. Ultimately, the results will help inform the Regeneration Plan which is currently under way.

All secondary schools in the Derry City Council area have agreed to take part in the on-line survey which will be completed during school hours. Every pupil who completes the survey will be entered into a draw and one person from each of the 15 participating schools will win a Netbook.

Michael Gallagher, Ilex’s Strategy & Regeneration Manager said: “While we rely on the internet more and more for all aspects of our daily lives, access to it is not as widespread as it should be. With access you can shop on-line, surf, pay bills, manage your money, etc. Children and young people don’t just use the net for social reasons, they are increasingly relying on it to complete course work and do research. But households without access are paying more for goods and services and their children are disadvantaged.

Schools are already planning for a future where all work will be set, completed and submitted on-line in a virtual learning environment. This new way of learning will be more environment-friendly and will better equip students for the world of work. Ilex’s recent Citiscope household survey found that education and training are amongst the top priorities for citizens with unequal access to the internet being highlighted as a key concern”.

The survey started on October 20th and will finish on November 13th.

For further information contact Mo Durkan, Ilex - 028 7126 9226 or 07917 544297.
