North West Seminar - Developing a strategic approach to meeting funding needs

St Columb’s Park House, Derry - Wednesday 8th April 2009

North-West Community Network and the Community Foundation Northern Ireland would like to draw your attention to the above event, organised jointly by the two organisations.

It has been devised in response to the current challenging circumstances facing organisations in the community & voluntary sector and the changing nature of funding in general.

The event will hopefully be of greatest interest and value to smaller community groups who may face the greatest challenge in modifying their approach to funding.

All groups welcome – you are requested to share the event details (see attached programme) with especially smaller groups with whom you are in contact.

Places are limited to 50 and filling up fast so it may be necessary to prioritise amongst groups registering to attend.

If you wish to participate in this event, please register before Tuesday 31 March by contacting either Neola Nelis at the Network on 028 7127 9090 / neola@nwcn.org or the Community Foundation - Patricia Stewart or Betty McNally, tel: 90245927.  Lunch is provided.

Charity Bank

In a very difficult financial environment, more and more voluntary and community organisations are turning to Charity Bank to seek advice and finance, in order to help secure their future and achieve their aims.  Charity Bank is a unique organisation.  We are the UK’s only regulated bank which is also a registered general charity.  We’re the only bank that uses our depositors’ savings purely to support charities, voluntary and community organisations and social enterprises.  We have approved over £70 million in loans to over 600 organisations.  While the average loan size is over £80,000, we lend from £5,000 upwards.  We have made loans to every part of the third sector from community regeneration to housing, sustainable development to umbrella organisations and sport, arts and heritage to social care.  We lend for buildings and land purchase and regeneration, working capital, capital investment and to bridge finance gaps until grant funding comes through.  We also provide a range of deposit accounts for individuals, charities and other organisations, providing a social benefit as well as a financial return.

£120,000 lent to Newry and Mourne Carers Association to help them finish renovating their Carers Centre...

£12,000 lent to the Women’s Resource and Development Agency to meet pension commitments and protect their cashflow.

Search is on for the most enterprising place in Northern Ireland

Invest Northern Ireland is searching for our most enterprising locality today via the Northern Ireland regional heat of the Enterprising Britain 2009 competition.

Enterprising Britain seeks out areas of enterprise excellence from across the UK – villages, towns, cities and neighbourhoods which have embedded a culture of enterprise that supports and encourages entrepreneurs and businesses. It is funded locally by Invest NI and delivered by Ballymena Business Centre.

Last year, Ashton Community Trust in Belfast was named the most enterprising place in Northern Ireland and went through to compete in the national competition in London. The organisation has been at the centre of physical and social regeneration of the area since its foundation in 1991. The Trust has renovated community buildings, attracted over £15m of inward investment and assisted regeneration. It has enabled more than 2,000 people to gain training accreditations.

Enterprising Britain is free to enter and is open to all places in Northern Ireland that can demonstrate the impact enterprise has had on their community in the past two years. To download an application form visit www.ballymenabusiness.co.uk or email your contact details to melanie@ballymenabusiness.co.uk.

Volunteer Counselling with ChildLine:  Whatever you do, you could do this too.

ChildLine is a 24 hour 7 day a week free telephone helpline for children and young people.  The ChildLine online service, which offers callers the opportunity to engage through live chat, message boards and private inboxes, is currently being rolled out across bases nationally and will go live in the Foyle Base in September.  The organisation relies on volunteers to listen and respond to those who contact the service.  ChildLine Foyle is currently seeking volunteer counsellors in the dual role of telephone and online counsellors. We are looking for people who are open-minded, non-judgemental and genuinely care about children and young people. Initial training of 10 modules including counselling skills and child protection, observations and mentored shifts is offered in addition to ongoing issue based and refresher training as well as supervisory support. An information meeting will be held in the Foyle Base in April: please call Cormac Nolan, Volunteer Coordinator on

Echo Echo offer performance skills weekend workshop

Echo Echo introduces another of its ever-popular weekend workshops this spring. The company has designed a workshop based on Movement Improvisation in Performance to be held on 4th and 5th April.

Created for beginner to intermediate performers (although more experienced people are welcome to attend), it will be led by Co-Artistic Director of Echo Echo Steve Batts along with dancer/choreographer Ayesha Mailey, who each bring their own individual style and influences to the teaching.
Each day of the Movement Improvisation in Performance workshop will be divided into two parts. In the morning participants will work on developing physical skills and sensitivity through structured explorations of movement with Steve Batts. Throughout Steve’s teaching the focus will be on the deep pleasures in discovery and creativity.
In the afternoon sessions, Ayesha Mailey will guide participants on how to place individual skill and creativity inside improvisation structures and scores framed with rules and themes.

Ayesha says: “By allowing your imagination to guide you, we’ll have the chance to dance and create together.”

The Movement Improvisation in Performance weekend workshop will be held on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th April in the Echo Echo Dance Studio, Waterside Theatre Derry. It costs £40 or £20 concession.

For more information or to book a place on this course, contact the Echo Echo office on 028 7134 2266, email info@echoechodance.com or visit www.echoechodance.com
