£2million Tourism Innovation Fund can bring local stories to life

Tourism Minister Arlene Foster launched a £2million Tourism Innovation Fund to support tourism projects which will attract more visitors to Northern Ireland.
The fund aims to help revenue projects to increase tourism, stimulate product development and improve the visitor experience with a particular focus on bringing local stories to life.
This scheme will encourage unique, individual and compelling reasons for visitors to come to Northern Ireland and return in the future. It will focus on revenue projects such as creative interpretation and innovative ways to showcase our many tourism products.
The NI Tourist Board is seeking revenue projects which provide innovative and creative solutions to market demands. With grant levels starting at £20,000 and up to a maximum of £150,000, this is a real opportunity for tourism businesses in Northern Ireland.

New look Community NI

Originally launched in 2005, CommunityNI was created to provide an online home for voluntary and community organisations to advertise jobs and events and publish news. The site has around 1,300 visitors a day, with hundreds of people regularly contributing articles on behalf of their organisations.
The look of the site has been updated, though it retains most of its previous features. Not only will you be able to add your news, events and jobs to the site as before, but you will also be able to edit or remove any of the items you've added, even when the content is live. Also, there will be no delay in getting your information on the site. As soon as you submit it, it will appear.
CommunityNI will also have a social networking functionality, allowing you to search for organisations, create and join groups, and more. You will also be able to search for individuals who have registered on the site, allowing for fantastic online networking capabilities.

New immigration detention emergency helpline

The Refugee Action Group (RAG) has announced the launch of it’s out of hours Immigration Detention Emergency Helpline 0800 8400 495.

Any person who is stopped and detained by Immigration Officers in Northern Ireland can now call the free and confidential helpline number. A trained volunteer will notify the detainee’s family where possible and will contact an Immigration Adviser who may be able to assist the detainee in challenging her/his detention.

Several NGOs and voluntary sector organisations, such as Law Centre (NI) and Amnesty International, welcome the launch of the Helpline which will provide an invaluable service to detainees.

The process of immigration detention can be extremely frightening and disorientating. People may find themselves detained in Northern Ireland and then quickly transported to detention centres in GB. Uprooted from their home, family and support networks, detainees may find it extremely difficult to obtain help.

The Helpline number is 0800 8400 495 and is available outside office hours, weekends and holidays. Any person at risk of detention should make a note of the Helpline number. However, RAG also urges members of the public to also ring the helpline if they witness a person being detained by Immigration Officers.
