Annual Picnic in the Park

Next Saturday, the 29th August, will see the fourth annual Picnic in the Park event at Brooke Park. The event organised by the Friends of Brooke Park and SEEDS, and supported by Derry City Council, will provide a packed programme of activities for young and old alike from noon to 5pm. As in previous years the event has been geared towards maximising the positives of the park.  And don’t worry about the weather as there will be four large marquees with each one hosting specialised activities. In one tent the cream of Derry’s up and coming young bands; the Future Chasers, Evacuates, Reverb and Revolution Monday will be appearing. In another marquee there will be the mellow sounds of Jazz, Folk, Classical, Traditional and choral music. A third tent will provide a full programme of artistic activity programme for children while the fourth marquee will house an historical exhibition about the Park, storytelling and other activities for a more sedate audience. And if you can’t bring a picnic there will be the now famous Brooke Park BBQ offered again by the Changaro Trust with all monies raised going to their street children’s refuge in Kenya. Throughout the day the Park will come alive with clowns, jugglers, balloon modellers, samba bands and a host of children’s games where every child has a chance of winning a sack race, three legged race or egg and spoon race. It is a great day for families and the perfect remedy for the ‘going back to school blues’ with a fun filled family friendly day which is of course free; free entry and alcohol free. The Friends of Brooke Park need volunteers to help organise and run the wide range of events so if you have a few hours free on Saturday afternoon maybe you can help your community and play your part in providing our families with a great day’s entertainment. If you require more information please contact the Friends of Brooke Park on 71-370989.
