Share your vision on the future of the social and economic future of the EU
The European Citizens Consultations are the first ever pan European debate involving citizens from all 27 Member States to debate the future of the European Union across the boundaries of geography and language. This online debate on the question: ‘What can the EU do to shape our economic and social future in a globalised world?’ 27 national websites in all official EU languages will generate proposals which will contribute to the discussions held by 1,500 randomly selected citizens from all EU Member States. These discussions will take place in the 27 national citizens’ consultations in March 2009. In May 2009, citizens from all EU countries will present their recommendations for our social and economic future to European leaders and candidate Members of the European Parliament. You can help them in this challenging task. The ideas which receive the most support will be discussed at he European Citizens’ Consultation in your country and then at a European level. Engaging in the debate enables you to take part in ECC 2009 and get your voice heard. Find out more about how to participate at: www.european-citizens-consultations.eu/ |

Do you want to support refugees and other immigrants?
Can you be on call for one night per week from 5 PM until 9 AM? If so, then you could be a Refugee Action Group (RAG) helpline volunteer. The Refugee Action Group (RAG) is setting up an out-of-hours helpline for refugees and other immigrants in Northern Ireland who are stopped and detained by the immigration authorities at times when solicitors’ offices and other advice centres are closed. The helpline will be an emergency contact number for people who are picked up in immigration enforcement operations by the UK Border Agency, such as the secretive Operation Gull which targets people arriving at sea and air ports in Northern Ireland who are then held in police custody at unknown locations. The helpline may help the detainee to contact a friend or relative to tell them and can signpost the caller to legal advice. It will also allow some records to be kept of people detained, which can be used in lobbying and campaigning against anti-refugee and anti-immigrant measures. To volunteer and to find out more, please contact RAG Chair, Paul Kazadi at kazadip@hotmail.com giving your full name, email address and telephone number. All volunteers will be provided with training before working on the helpline. You may want to read this eyewitness account of immigration enforcement operations by RAG supporter here. Please get involved! RAG is also looking for a Vice Chair to join the four-person Executive of the Group. Ideally, this person should be a refugee or an asylum-seeker but all are welcome to put themselves forward and to find out more information from the Chair, Paul Kazadi at kazadip@hotmail.com / http://www.refugeeactiongroup.com |

Earth Hour - show the world you care
Be part of a massive global event, WWF’s Earth Hour offers a significant way for your organisation, staff, colleagues and friends to show for global action to tackle climate change. On Saturday 28 March 2009 at 8.30 pm, WWF wants individuals, businesses, companies and iconic buildings across Northern Ireland to turn of their lights for one hour - WWF’s Earth Hour. WWF’s Earth Hour is a key milestone in our international campaign to convince world leaders to agree an effective global deal when they meet at the UN climate summit in December 2009. WWF aims to get a billion people in 1,000 cities across the world involved. In Northern Ireland the Assembly has agreed we should be part of the UK Climate Bill, but has not yet committed to Northern Ireland specific targets or plans for reducing emissions or playing our part in tackling climate change. This is your chance to show that all governments, including our own Assembly and Executive must commit to clear climate change targets and actions. Let’s make sure we send out a message that cannot be ignored by turning off our lights for WWF’s Earth Hour. If we all turn out our lights, we will send a truly dramatic message to the decision makers that we need an effective treaty that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and keep the rise in average global temperatures below 2ºC, so why not sign up now? The WWF website is full of ideas for ways to get involved including a business toolkit to help your workplace get involved. Find out more at: www.wwf.org.uk/how_you_can_help/earthhour/index.cfm |
