Galliagh Development Trust Community Engagement

Galliagh Development Trust has engaged Holywell Consultancy to carry out an independent community engagement process on two proposed redevelopment schemes within the Galliagh area. Holywell Consultancy is keen to hear from the community on their views of the following proposed developments.

Playpark & MUGA

This proposed redevelopment will result in a new, purpose built playpark and Multi Use Games Area (MUGA)\u8200 ?for the local community.

These facilities, which will both be fenced and secure, will be an asset for the local community. The playpark, which has been designed with the input from local children, will have facilities for children up to the age of 14. This park will provide a much needed safe playspace for the local community. The MUGA, which will be open for all to use, will be equipped to be used in a range of ways. This floodlit facility will provide diversionary activities for local young people in a safe environment.

Plans for the delivery of this development are at an advanced stage.

Neighbourhood Centre

Galliagh Development Trust is spearheading a consortium of local groups and agencies in the development of a Neighbourhood Centre for the wider Outer North area. The proposed site for this development is at Carnhill Roundabout.

The plans for this centre, which are at the early stages of development, are for a place where the community can access a wide range of services and support. The Centre will be open and accessible by all local people and will be an icon of the redevelopment of the local area.

Community ownership and support is crucial for any redevelopment scheme and Holywell Consultancy is committed to ensuring that the local community has the opportunity to have their voice heard on these redevelopment schemes. The local community is being engaged through a community newsletter, door-to-door interviews conducted by Off The Streets staff, an online survey (see link below), interviews with community representatives and 3 open evenings to be held on:

Monday 27th July 2009, 7.00pm - 9.00pm, Skeoge House, 59a Leafair Park

Tuesday 28th July 2009, 7.00pm - 9.00pm, Lenamore Youth Centre, Lenamore Road

Wednesday 29th July 2009, 7.00pm - 9.00pm, Greater Shantallow Area Partnership, Units C3 &\u8200 ?C4, Northside Village Complex, Glengalliagh Road.

These sessions are open for all to attend. The online survey can be accessed through www.holywellconsultancy.com/surveys

Transport Minister announces the preferred route for A5 Western Transport Corridor

Transport Minister Conor Murphy and his southern counterpart Minister Noel Dempsey TD, announced the preferred route for the A5 Western Transport Corridor, the proposed 86 kilometre long dual carriageway from Derry to Aughnacloy, estimated to cost between 650million and 850million.
Speaking in Omagh, Co. Tyrone the Minister said: The A5 Western Transport Corridor is one of five Key Transport Corridors identified in the Regional Transportation Strategy for the North of Ireland. This major road improvement scheme represents quite a significant step in improving connections between Dublin and Derry and
Donegal in the North West of Ireland.
The Minister outlined the preferred route saying: "It starts at the Derry end with a new single carriageway by-pass to the west of New Buildings. Immediately south of New Buildings there will be a roundabout which will be the start of the new dual carriageway. This roundabout will also facilitate possible future road links between the A5 and the A6 and also across the River Foyle to the west of the City and
Donegal. Running southwards from New Buildings, the preferred route tracks west of Magheramason, east of Bready, west of Cloghcor and Ballymagorry and by-passes Strabane to the west.
"The preferred route passes between Sion Mills and Glebe, passes west of Victoria Bridge and Newtownstewart and continues west of Mountjoy and Omagh. At the southern end, the preferred route tracks to the west of Garvaghy and Ballygawley before bypassing Aughnacloy on its east side to meet with the A28 Armagh/Newry route. From this point, a short section of single carriageway will facilitate connection to the proposed improvements to upgrade the N2 route in County Monaghan."

Public exhibitions, at which more detailed maps will be available to inform the public about the Preferred Route, are being held at the following locations:
The Silverbirch Hotel, Omagh on Monday 27 July from 12.00noon to 9.00pm
The Fir Trees Hotel, Strabane on Tuesday 28 July from 12.00noon to 9.00pm
The Everglades Hotel, Derry, on Wednesday 29 July from 12.00noon to 9.00pm
St Ciarans College, Ballygawley on Thursday 30 July from 12.00noon to 9.00pm
Staff from Roads Service and their advisors will be available to answer questions.
