Thursday 30 April 2009, St Columb’s Park House, 10.30 – 1.30 (lunch included) A North-West Seminar on “Coping with the Recession” has been organised jointly by North-West Community Network and NICVA. Prompt booking is recommended as places are limited. In the plainest terms possible, what many of us have observed occurring in other sectors – closures, job losses etc. – is a prospect that the Community & Voluntary sector must consider seriously. Analysis of past economic cycles indicates that the most severe recessionary impacts affect community & voluntary activity between nine and twelve months after other sectors. This can be directly linked to cuts in public spending, hits on investments by charitable trusts and foundations and of course reduced income earned from reserves, especially for larger organisations. The seminar will set out the key areas that community and voluntary organisations need to be aware of and action in order to survive. The Agenda for the seminar aims to set the context for what we may face as well as providing practical advice that will be relevant to groups of all types and size. For further information or to register, contact: NWCN - Neola Nelis, tel: 028 7127 9090 or neola@nwcn.org or NICVA - Cathy Breslin at tel: 028 9087 7777 or cathy.breslin@nicva.org |

The Peace and Reconciliation Group are holding a Forum on Forgiving on Monday 27 April 2009 From 10.30 to 12.45 at 16 Bishop Street. Speakers: Maureen Hetherington (The Junction) and Brian Lennon, S.J. Given the backdrop of the conflict, forgiving is a highly emotive issue for many people who have been directly or indirectly impacted by violence, in all its forms. But if we are to move forward, we need to talk and debate this at length until we are talked out, and we have explored what it means to us as individuals and as a collective society. This Forum will not pressure us to forgive. It will offer us an opportunity to think through and process some of the inner conversations that fill our heads when we hear the word forgiving mentioned.
Some of the questions which may come up in the Forum are: What does real forgiving involve? What happens when you can't forgive and want only revenge? Do we put unfair demands on those who have suffered most? Do we focus too much on victim hood? What price do we pay if we define ourselves as victims? Does society help people to move in this direction, or towards becoming survivors? Brian Lennon’s latest book: So You Can't Forgive...? Moving Towards Freedom, published by Columba Press will be available at the Forum. For further information, contact: Michael Doherty, Peace and Reconciliation Group, 7136 2906 or Maureen Hetherington, The Junction, 7136 1942 or Brian Lennon, 3751 0630. |
