Thursday 30 April 2009, St Columb’s Park House, 10.30 – 1.30 (lunch included) A North-West Seminar on “Coping with the Recession” has been organised jointly by North-West Community Network and NICVA. Prompt booking is recommended as places are limited. In the plainest terms possible, what many of us have observed occurring in other sectors – closures, job losses etc. – is a prospect that the Community & Voluntary sector must consider seriously. Analysis of past economic cycles indicates that the most severe recessionary impacts affect community & voluntary activity between nine and twelve months after other sectors. This can be directly linked to cuts in public spending, hits on investments by charitable trusts and foundations and of course reduced income earned from reserves, especially for larger organisations. The seminar will set out the key areas that community and voluntary organisations need to be aware of and action in order to survive. The Agenda for the seminar aims to set the context for what we may face as well as providing practical advice that will be relevant to groups of all types and size. For further information or to register, contact: NWCN - Neola Nelis, tel: 028 7127 9090 or neola@nwcn.org or NICVA - Cathy Breslin at tel: 028 9087 7777 or cathy.breslin@nicva.org |

Community Relations Week - What’s it to you?
25th April 2009 - 3rd May 2009 Derry City Council will be asking the public to give their take on Community Relations in a programme of over 50 events for Community Relations Week which runs from Saturday April 25 to Saturday May 2. This year's theme of "Community Relations - What's It To You?" asks ordinary people to think about what good community relations means to them. Community Relations week aims to challenge racism and sectarianism and promote peace building, cross-community and cultural diversity work. It is a way for everyone to show that they support building a shared and better future for all. Locally, Derry City Council and Community and Voluntary Sector groups have created a diverse packed programme. There really is something for everyone! Highlights of Community Relations Week include the launch of the "Do You Get The Guildhall" Education Programme. The fascinating "Siege and Celebrations" tells the historic story of the siege, the Apprentice Boys of Derry association and modern day commemorations allowing a wider understanding of the events. The week will also see the opening of "The Tunnels" at Lisnagelvin that have had a dramatic face lift by local school groups. Other events include a talk and tour entitled 'From Protest to Peace and Reconciliation', 'Toddle Together' where local toddlers will be encouraged to toddle together to St Columb's Park House and 'A Different Drum' a musical workshop at St Patrick's and Brigid's College in Claudy. Full event details are available by clicking on www.derrycity.gov.uk/goodrelations. This year’s campaign is called 'Community Relations - What's It To You?' Let our local politicians know what is important to you about Community Relations by filling out our online postcard or by visiting us in Foyleside 24th and 25th! Foyle Hockey Club puts Northwest back on map again!
Men’s Senior Hockey is poised to return to the North West next season and there will be a real international flavour to the new team based at St Columb’s Park. Foyle HC has just received confirmation from the Ulster Branch in April that they will be playing in Senior Two of the Ulster league in September ‘09. Foyle Hockey Club has attracted players from Spain, South Africa, Scotland, Wales, England, India and Pakistan and not forgetting a few home grown ones too. We wish to appeal to more prospective players to get in contact to bolster our number as we prepare for our very first season whilst others are winding down. The Northwest region has not provided the opportunity for boys to play hockey at any level whatsoever for about 40 years or more! Therefore it genuinely has a perception of being a girls sport here! This perception does not exist in any other part of Ireland, so we need to acknowledge and redress this imbalance. When you think of an area from Portrush to Derry to Strabane to Dungiven there is no schoolboy’s hockey and I hope this can be seen as a renaissance and exciting choice for kids and their parents to play this fast sport which can keep you fit and playing into your fifties and sixties! Our club management committee firmly believes that the future of the club needs local kids coming through from voluntary community groups as well as primary, secondary and tertiary sectors The support received from the Ulster Branch, the Irish Hockey Association and from the Derry City Council’s Sports Development Officer Tommy McCallion has been superb. Membership is open to all, so if anyone would like to join or learn more about Foyle Hockey Club please contact FHC Chairman Alan Mc Cague on 07764499495. |

One way of helping to ensure that everyone can fully participate in the Information Society is for industry to design Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) products, services and applications that we all can use. The Design for All concept encourages manufacturers and service providers to produce new technologies for everyone: technologies that are suitable for the elderly and people with disabilities, as much as the teenage techno wizard. Design for All (DfA) embraces the idea that it is perfectly possible to produce ICT goods which can be accessed by nearly all potential users without modification or, failing that, products should be easy to adapt according to different needs, or should use standardised interfaces that can be accessed simply by using assistive technology. Assistive Technologies (ATs) can provide the vital link that adapts mainstream Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to the needs of people with disabilities. ATs are adaptive devices that enable people with special needs to access all manner of technical products and services. ATs cover a whole range of ICTs, from customised keyboards and speech recognition software to Braille computer displays and closed captioning systems for TV. The European Commission is committed to promoting DfA as part of its wider pledge to ensure equal access to the Information Society. Find out how technology is being used to support an accessible information society through short videos and podcasts, case studies or via the EC's e-Accessibility page. Visit the Finalists and Winner of the e-Accessibility category in the European e-Inclusion Awards 2008 or learn about the EU Council's recent report which aims to support the standardisation of technology use across Europe. If you need support to develop partnerships that could facilitate the accessible use of technology, Citizens Online are here to help on behalf of the European Commission.
