In light of the number of people now suffering from or at risk of, fuel poverty, Derry Sinn Fein would like to invite you to take part in an information day on this issue in the Minor Hall of the city’s Guildhall on Wednesday 22nd October 2008 from 1.00pm to 5.00pm. The event will focus on both benefit uptake and energy saving, to ensure optimum household income and that household bills are at a minimum. Eleanor Gill of the Consumers Council will make a key note address at the conference and take some questions, and a number of organisations such as your own will also be attending. This event coincides with energy efficiency week and with people facing into a very uncertain winter we would encourage your attendance at this important event. We would also ask that you welcome and encourage any of the groups or residents that you deal with on a regular basis to also attend this event. 1.00pm: Information stalls, 2.00pm: Address by Eleanor Gill, 2.30pm: Q&A, 3.00 - 5.00pm: Stalls RSVP ASAP please to Sinn Féin Unit R3E Blighs Lane, Derry, BT48 ODY or call 028 71377551. |

Save money with more efficient home heating
Top advice from the Energy Saving Trust: It shouldn’t be hard work keeping your home nice and warm and your hot water hot. But if your boiler is more than 15 years old, it’s probably not as efficient as it should be. Around 70% of carbon dioxide (CO²) emissions from your home are down to your boiler. An efficient boiler could save you up to £130 on your household bills as well as 875kg of CO². Add in a full set of heating controls as you will increase the savings to around £230 a year. When replacing your old boiler, you could also consider installing a wood pellet boiler which can save around £300 to £350 per year for a detached home off the gas network and also save up to 5 tonnes of CO² every year. There are plenty of other simple things you can do around the home today to help you save energy and money. For example: Be switched on - take a free online home energy check at www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/proxy/view/full/165/homeenergycheck Switch off your appliances - don’t leave them on standby or charge unnecessarily and save around £32 a year. Wash your clothes at 30 degrees instead of at higher temperatures and use around 40% less electricity. When making hot drinks only boil as much water as you need - but remember to always cover the element in an electric kettle. To learn more about what you can do to help save energy and money call the Energy Saving Trust Advice centre on free phone 0800 512 012. |
