Derry City Council, through the Community Support Plan, and the Audit of Community & Voluntary Sector Training Needs within the Derry City Council Area, is offering a series of training courses free of charge across the Community and Voluntary sector in the Council Area. One of these courses is an anti-racism training day, which is taking place on the 11th June 2009 in St Columbs Park House, L'Derry. This free training day will focus on racism in Northern Ireland and will also feature the experiences of migrant workers living and working in Northern Ireland. Creggan CORE Project Creating Opportunities to Return to Education
The CORE Project will target those who are unemployed and economically inactive and will assist them to begin a process of learning, leading to qualifications, further education and employment.
New courses being offered through the CORE Project June – July MOUS (Word Core) – Thursday 10 - 12
Also registering for courses beginning September 2009 Full range of ICT courses including Start IT, ECDL – CLAIT, MOUS Core modules - Word, Excel and Access GCSE English / GCSE Maths, Access Course (Foundation Studies Diploma), Business Administration / Accounts, New Opportunities Course leading to units from the ACCESS Diploma & Employment Skills
All those registering on any course will also receive career progression training, CV writing and interview skills training and will be supported in moving towards further education, training and employment. Participants should be unemployed or working less than 16 hrs and will receive childcare support where applicable

“Managing the challenge” of living with a long term condition
Self management entails both a positive mental attitude and positive actions that help you get on with living your life the way you want to. It involves knowing when to recognize the limitations that your condition has put in your life and meeting the challenge of living your life to the full in spite of them. It is a course that will help you manage your condition more effectively. It will enable you to deal with pain, fatigue and stress by giving you helpful techniques such as exercise, relaxation, action planning, problem solving and by sharing experiences with others. The course is delivered to a group of 12-15 people over 6 weeks in 6 consecutive 2 hour sessions. It is delivered by 2 trainers that work and or care with people with long term conditions and that have received training to deliver the course. In just 6 weekly 2 hour sessions you will understand more about your condition and learn new skills in how to self manage it through various methods such as group work, working in pairs and listening to talks. There is no cost for the training it is free to anyone that has a long term health condition and is interested in learning new skills in self managing. The courses are run throughout the Western Health Trust Area from Limavady borough council area, Derry city council area, Strabane district council area, Omagh borough council area, and Fermanagh district council area. Trauma research - Looking for volunteers for 20 mins!
Melissa Milanak, a researcher from Bucknell University, is looking for local volunteers to give up 20 minutes of their time to assist with research. No prior experience is needed - she simply requires a range of adults living locally to record their reactions to a range of images on a computer. The purpose of the research is to increase our knowledge of the effects of trauma and to create programs to give back to the community.
