Discounts available for domestic ratepayers

A 4% discount is available to all
Northern Ireland domestic ratepayers if they pay their rate bill in full by 5 May.
Payment must be received and credited to rate accounts by this date - five working days should be allowed for the payment to be received.  A spokesman for Land & Property Services explained: “Rate bills can be paid in full by cheque, cash or debit card at any post office, bank or building society.
“Direct Debit is the most flexible way to pay. If customers have already signed up to pay the 2009/10 rate bill in full by direct debit, the payment will be taken from accounts on May 7 (not on May 5). Such Direct Debit customers will still receive the discount.”
Those who choose to pay their bill in
instalments will not be eligible for a discount.
For the full range of payment methods visit our website: www.lpsni.gov.uk

Local Foundation offering funding in Derry and Belfast

A local foundation that does not seek publicity for its charitable giving is inviting applications for funding from projects designed to help the relief of poverty and homelessness in Belfast and Derry/Londonderry.  The trustees meet quarterly to award grants totaling £2,000 to £5,000 or around £20,000 per annum.

Given the overall level of funding available from the Foundation those considering applying should ask for a modest amount within overall grant total.

Organisations are invited to apply in writing to:

Mr W McKeown, Secretary to the Charitable Foundation, 13-21 Queen’s Arcade, Belfast BT1 5FE.

Community Food Initiatives

Health Food for All and safefood are establishing a demonstration programme on Community Food Initiatives (CFIs) and are looking for funding applications from eligible groups and organisations.  CFIs are projects that improve the availability and accessibility of healthy food for low-income groups at a local level, using a community development approach.  This funding is open to community groups or groups which have an anti-poverty focus in their work.

Applications are particularly welcomed from partnerships/collaborations of different groups.  As the programme has an all-island focus, a minimum of two projects will be selected from both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.  The programme will be targeted towards Community Food Initiatives, which include:

Buying equipment for a kitchen, e.g. pots and pans, or a garden, gardening tools/seeds.

Renting space to carry out training and education initiatives.

Establishing and supporting food access initiatives such as community cafes and local food co-ops.

Education and/or training in skills development programmes e.g., cooking, shopping, parenting and budgeting.

Seed funding to establish a food market with support from local authority and other partners.

Buying the time of a professional on a part-time basis, e.g. part time nutrition expert to work with groups and give classes advising on food purchasing, preparation and safe cooking practices and/or horticulturist to work with groups on community garden projects.

Supporting groups to develop food related micro business e.g. fruit tuck shops in school/food co-ops.

Community Supported Agricultural projects which help develop sustainable local food economies through supporting local networks.  Each CFI will receive annual funding over a period of three years to set up, manage and sustain a project. Funding will be up to a maximum of €75,000/£70,000, which will be provided on an incremental basis over the three year period.

Application forms and supporting information can be downloaded from: www.healthyfoodforall.com or by contacting Dr Joanna Wydenbach on 00353 (0) 86 770 8541 or cfi@healthyfoodforall.com

Crunch: The Effect of the Credit Crunch on the Developing World

On Thursday 23rd April, Children in Crossfire invite Dr Matthias Fiedler to present a seminar at the Junction on ‘Crunch: the Effect of the Credit Crunch on the Developing World’.  Matthias has been recently appointed Director of the Irish Development Education Association (IDEA). IDEA’s main goal is to advance and support a professional, cohesive and creative development education sector in Ireland. Prior to that Matthias worked for two years for the DICE (Development and Intercultural Education) project, an Irish Aid funded project that aims to integrate development education and intercultural education in initial teacher education in Ireland.

Children in Crossfire invite Matthias to speak on how the financial crisis in economically developed countries is affecting the lives of people in developing countries.

As the credit crunch continues to effect more economically developed countries such as England, Ireland and the United States, the natural inclination is to implement protectionist solutions.  These protectionist solutions, however, leave many underdeveloped countries in the world vulnerable to the many crises they face –climate, food, and economic crises.   As a result, it is important for developed countries to maintain their commitment to aid the developing world.

If you would like to learn more, Matthias Fiedler will be speaking at The Junction, Bishop Street on Thursday 23rd April from 1:00 to 3:00 pm.  We encourage you to come along.  There will be tea, coffee and sandwiches provided, and a space for discussion following Matthias’ talk.
