Big Thinking Reports

The Big Lottery Fund is to pump a multi-million pound package of funding into communities to help them cope with the effects of the recession and increase its funding commitment to the voluntary and community sector following its Big Thinking consultation.

£43 million is to be invested across the UK to tackle the longer-term effects of the recession on the UK’s communities.  BIG is working closely with stakeholders to determine what form the support will take, but it is thought that it could include targeted funding for specific services such as debt advice and support to help train increasing numbers of volunteers.

Responding to the increasing pressure facing the sector, BIG has also reprioritised and refocused its portfolio and increased the budgets of some of its most popular programmes, to the tune of around £45 million.  All these adjustments have been made to help get funding fast to where the sector says it is most needed.

A key difference in BIG’s approach will be an enhanced UK wide target that at least 80% of funding goes directly to the voluntary and community sector from 2009 - 2015.

A range of other factors that will determine BIG’s approach to funding through to 2015 are contained in BIG’s strategic framework, published at:  www.biglotteryfund.org.uk/bigthinking

Awards for Bridging Cultures

The Awards for Bridging Cultures (ABCs) reward grassroots projects run by voluntary and community organisations that help to build bridges between communities and cultures.  The Awards are funded by the Baring Foundation and run by iCOCO.

The Awards for Bridging Cultures are open to organisations across the UK and are keen to attract more applications from Northern Ireland, to highlight the good work that is going on here.

There are three categories for organisations (two for voluntary sector, one for public/private sector) and one category for individuals.  The voluntary sector winners and commended organisations will receive cash prizes.

All applicants are invited to attend a one day learning event and awards ceremony at a prestigious London venue in December.

The application and assessment process is simple but fair.  The emphasis is on the impact of the project itself and how well it meets the judging criteria, rather than on how well written the application is!

Download the ABCs guidance for applicants to see if your project is eligible for an award or visit www.bridgingcultures.org.uk for more information, see last years winning projects and apply online.

The deadline for applications is 5.00pm on Monday 14 September 2009.

For further information, please contact the ABCs team at awards@bridgingcultures.org.uk or call:

Drinkaware grants

The Drinkaware grants scheme aims to change the UK’s drinking culture for the better.  It works to positively influence public behaviour and find innovative ways to raise awareness about the effects of alcohol, to help reduce alcohol misuse and minimise alcohol-related harm.

Funded projects include peer-led education schemes, alcohol education work, awareness raising among disadvantaged people who are at risk of harm form alcohol misuse, pilot projects and innovative work.

Grants are available to groups in any part of the UK, working with any population group, through three schemes:

Ideas fund - up to £2,000

The Ideas Fund is ideal for community-based projects needing to support to work out an initial idea before applying for a larger award.

Awareness Projects - up to £25,000

Perhaps you need a larger award to help with project costs, resources or publicity for work already developed? This scheme offers the funds you need to deliver messages which raise awareness about alcohol misuse and bring about tangible change.

Big Impact Awards - up to £100,000

This initiative is designed to help larger scale projects pack a more powerful punch or reach a wider audience.  Proposals need to show how an organisation’s work has impact, and how it contributes to learn about alcohol awareness and education.

To apply or to download an application form, see the grants guidelines at: http://www.drinkaware.co.uk/grants/how-to-apply

Community Dialogue - ‘Steps into Dialogue Programme’

Community Dialogue have recently been funded through Peace III to deliver a ‘Steps into Dialogue Programme’

The overall goal of the project is to use dialogue as a mechanism that allows those affected by the conflict to deal with and address their past and to begin to respect and understand the views and past of others.

In order to initiate the programme and get some feel of the issues, we intend to organise a Dialogue Session at the Community Relations Office Linen Green Moygashel Dungannon on 10th September at 7pm.

Key questions which we wish to pose at this session include:

What are the issues that you and the people in your community need to discuss?

Who do we need to be target and engage around those issues?

Are there barriers to getting people involved?

Is there a need to provide safe spaces to enable people to discuss the issues?

Are there creative approaches that would be useful?

Your input at this event would be greatly appreciated. If you would like to come along, please confirm if you are able to attend by Friday 21st August so that we can finalise numbers for catering purposes. For more information, contact Dialogue Development Officer Jim O’Neill at admin@communitydialogue.org

What are Transition Committees and how can we get involved?

The establishment of Transition Committees is the latest development in the work to implement the Review of Public Administration.  There are eleven committees - one for each new council area - with membership drawn from elected members from each existing area.

The Committees are important as they have the power to try our community planning in local areas as well as discussing and agreeing key priorities for the council.

This seminar at NICVA on 16 September 2009 will give voluntary and community organisations the opportunity to find out more about the work of transition committees and catch up on other developments in changes to local government and discuss any issues or concerns.

If you would like to attend, please contact Cathy Breslin at NICVA on 028 9087 7777 or cathy.breslin@nicva.org

Rural Community Network’s Annual Conference & AGM 2009

A Changing Sector in Challenging Times

Friday 25 September, 10am to 4pm, Millbrook Hotel, Ballynahinch, Co Down.

Our 18th Annual Conference is held against the backdrop of a continuing recession. The community and voluntary sector will not escape the collateral damage caused by new policy directions implemented in recessionary times. There is a major challenge to examine how we do our work.

As times and circumstances change, is what we do at present still the best way to do our business? Are there areas of our work which can be amended or cast aside and others where new opportunities must be grasped? These are challenging questions for the sector to ask – but ask we must. The sector must be responsive to change - indeed the sector should be a key driver for change in such a way that enhances the services to our members, our users and, ultimately, our rural communities.

The Annual Conference is a timely reminder that we are not on our own during this journey. Several organisations at regional, sub-regional and local level have embarked on a change programme and these journeys will be highlighted by the various speakers within the Conference. The event will also afford us the space to reflect on all our change experiences and give critical assistance and impetus in the continual development of a rural community development networking infrastructure that will not only meet current and future challenges but will create and seize opportunities that may arise from them.

To view the programme, find out who the speakers are and to register please contact:

028 8676 6670 or email:info@ruralcommunitynetwork.org or visit  http://www.ruralcommunitynetwork.org/databasedocs/doc_456345289.pdf

The Length of Ireland

On Thursday 3rd September, Graham Elliot starts a sponsored cycle ride from Mizen Head at the southern-most tip of Ireland, to Malin Head at the northern-most point to raise much needed funds the work of the Rural Women’s Front in Sri Lanka.

The shortest possible route is 362 miles through the centre of Ireland; the scenic route up the West coast is nearer 400 miles. If the weather forecast is reasonable I will take the scenic route.

RWF continue to support rural women and children in poverty in 10 work areas in southern and central

Sri Lanka. This is a difficult time for the Island as it tries to recover from the terrible effects of the war, the 2004 tsunami and the on-going grinding poverty of rural families. Having spent considerable periods of time in

Sri Lanka with RWF since October 2006, I know that this is a very worthy cause.

Please support me generously. All the money raised will go directly to the Rural Women’s Front. No deductions will be made for the cost of the ride. I have included a sponsor sheet but if asking family, friends or colleagues to support this event is not possible, a one-off donation would be very much appreciated.

Donations can also be sent to the Rural Women’s Front Support Group at 5 May Street, Derry-Londonderry,

BT47 6EZ, Northern Ireland, UK. (Please don’t make cheques payable to me personally.)

Donations can also be paid directly into the RWF Support Group account at: Nationwide Building Society.

Sort Code: 070093; Bank account: 33333334; Account number/Reference: 0944/703910440.

All money raised will be transferred directly to the RWF account in Sri Lanka.

Please see attached for further details of Graham’s cycle and sponsorship form……
