NICVA’S Annual Conference – What is the Role of the C & V Sector?
NICVA’s annual conference and AGM on 21 November 2008 will look at the voluntary and community sector's role in Northern Ireland. Entitled The value of voluntary and community organisations: our role in the future’, the conference will ask: ‘are organisations just cheap service providers or do they bring more fundamental values of association, collaboration and build the behaviours that underpin democracy?’ This conference will build on the work of the Carnegie Inquiry into the future of civil society in the UK and Ireland which has been exploring themes such as: the distinctive roles of civil society associations in tackling increasing fragmentation and socio-economic divides in society; the links between civil society, social justice and growing pressure on global resources; The distinctive roles that civil society associations play in creating safe spaces for meaningful deliberation where difference can be articulated and acknowledged. Based on this, NICVA will begin to explore what the voluntary and community sector’s role should be in Northern Ireland. This conference will be the opening event in a series of conversations that we hope to facilitate over the coming months. The agenda includes a keynote address by George Reid, former Speaker of the Scottish Parliament and Vice-Chair of the Carnegie Commission on The future of civil society — findings from the Carnegie Inquiry. There will also be a panel discussion with Maeve Walls, head of the Voluntary and Community Unit, Bill Osborne, VSB and a number of elected representatives, followed by workshops to reflect on the key issues raised, each featuring a different MLA. Check www.nicva.org for updates and see the brochure in the NICVA News mailouts. |

Free workshops by Holywell Trust
Holywell Trust is offering 4 free workshops in November/December '08 to interested groups. Background to the workshops: Some individuals, particularly young people, who are continually verbally abused, may sadly begin to lose that spirit and spark that we wish all people to have. Some people lose their ability to concentrate on their work and some even withdraw. Others turn to self-destructive behaviour such as abusing drugs and/or alcohol. Finally, some people, in despair, may turn to suicide. These workshops aim to increase the awareness, skills and power of participants to: Stop some members of our community from having to feel the fear, anger and loss of spirit that accompanies the use of degrading language. Stop and interrupt the pattern of escalation from words to stronger words and finally to threats and violence. Model for other people the confidence and skills to stand up and speak out for civility and respect. Contact Tony Carlin or John Donaghy at Holywell Trust. Telephone 02871261941 or 07843587757. |
