Policy and Lobbying Forum

The Policy and Lobbying Forum aims to bring together activists and lobbyists in the voluntary and community sector that have an interest in the work of the Northern Ireland Assembly. It is a place to share good practice, tips and inside information and to learn from each other.

The Forum also aims to increase the knowledge and capacity of its members by inviting a number of guest speakers. Previously, these have included: Mervyn Storey MLA, who spoke about influencing the DUP party group; Dr Brian Crowe, Head of Policy at UUP, who spoke on influencing UUP party policy and; Michael McKernan, Special Advisor to DSD Minister Margaret Ritchie.

The next meeting will be on Thursday 2 October 2008 from 10.30am to 12.30pm in NICVA. Dr Gareth McGrath, the new director of engagement of the Northern Ireland Assembly, will be the guest speaker.

Skills for Community Development

Co-operation Ireland is offering, through Queen’s University School of Education’s Open Learning Programme, an introductory community development course from October 2008.  The purpose of this course is to link us closer as an organisation with local communities and to develop a relationship with a range of diverse community groups and organisations to promote life long learning education.  A follow on and practical skills based course will also be offered from January 2009.

The course runs over five weekly sessions, beginning 1 October 2008.  The course fee is £27.00.  Please contact Barry Fennell, Development Officer, Co-Operation Ireland for more information on 028 9032 1462 or bfennell@cooperationireland.org or if you would like to enrol please contact the School of Education on

New round of funding opened!

The Community Development and Health Network (CDHN) are opening a new round of funding through its Building the Community-Pharmacy Partnership Programme (BCPP).

Level 1:  This funding is for those interested in working on a local community-pharmacy partnership.  We are now offering grants of up to £2,000 for a maximum of nine months.  This funding will help to get the project off the ground by developing ideas, partnerships and giving an insight into the needs and issues in your area.

Closing dates: 23rd October 08; 12th February 09 & 18th June 09.

Level 2:  This is for those who have a clear vision of what their project will do, what issues it will look at, who it will partner with and how it will go about achieving its aims and objectives.  This funding is open to all constituted community groups and pharmacists and grants will be awarded up to £10,000 for a maximum of 2 years.

Level 3:  This tier is for those who have already completed and evaluated a BCPP project and are now keen to sustain the work their project has already carried out.  In this level you could be eligible for a grant up to £10,000 per year for a maximum of 3 years.

Closing dates Level 2 & 3 – 20th November 08.

Help to End Child Poverty – Keep the Promise Campaign

It is simply unacceptable that 122,000 children in Northern Ireland live in poverty. Join the Keep the Promise campaign and support the Northern Ireland Child Poverty Alliance. You can help make it happen by signing an online petition and adding your name to the growing list.

The Northern Ireland Child Poverty Alliance is holding an event from 12.00 noon to 2.00pm in the Long Gallery at Stormont on 23 September to persuade as many MLAs as possible to sign up and urge the Prime Minister to Keep the Promise to end child poverty.

Voluntary and community organisations supporting the campaign are encouraged to come along to the event. If you would like to attend it is important that you register with I.MacDonald@savethechildren.org.uk to receive the necessary invitation.  The Government has pledged to end child poverty by 2020 and halve it by 2010. It is in danger of missing the 2010 target. With your support, we can ensure it ‘Keeps the Promise’ of a generation and end child poverty once and for all.

Age Awareness Week 2008

29 September to 3 October 2008 is Age Awareness Week, which this year has a Rights theme, with a particular focus on Human Rights and Equality.  The aim of the week is to raise awareness on the right to equality and non-discrimination and on the problem of multiple discrimination faced by many older people.

Launched by the Changing Ageing Partnership in 2006, this is Northern Ireland’s third Age Awareness Week.  The Changing Ageing Partnership (CAP) brings together Age Concern Northern Ireland, Help the Aged in Northern Ireland, Queen’s University Belfast and the Workers’ Educational Association and is funded by Atlantic Philanthropies.  CAP’s goal is to empower older people to transform how they are viewed by sections within our society and its vision is of a strong, informed voice capable of challenging attitudes and approaches to ageing.

On Thursday 02nd October 2008 in association with Age Awareness Week you are invited to attend a research event on Making Older People Equal – How to reform the law on access to services at Magee Campus (Great Hall) at 12.15pm for lunch and at 1 – 2.30pm for seminar.  Please contact Deaglan Coyle on 028 9097 3472 or email: d.p.coyle@qub.ac.uk or John Kennedy on 028 9031 2089 or email: john.kennedy@agesectorplatform.org
