A Unique Opportunity for Emerging Community Leaders
Are you currently engaged in making a positive difference within your local community or area? Are you part of a new generation of community leaders who became active since 1998? Are you interested in learning more about ‘dealing with the past’ issues in Northern Ireland and internationally?
INCORE at the University of Ulster, Intercomm Ireland, Belfast, and the Peace and Reconciliation Group, Derry/Londonderry are currently accepting applications for community leaders to participate in an exciting project called ‘Journeys Out’. The Journeys Out Project aims to engage a new generation of community leaders in the debate about ‘dealing with the past’, to explore these issues within their local communities and to learn more from international experiences of ‘dealing with the past’ following conflict. During 2009-2010, the project will work with 20 emerging community leaders from a variety of backgrounds and experiences to explore the legacy of the conflict and how local communities can make a contribution to the on-going debate on how to ‘deal with the past’. The target areas for the first cohort of participants are North/East/West Belfast; Strabane; Ballymena and Derry/Londonderry. For more information and to download an application form visit www.incore.ulst.ac.uk/policy/jo/, email je.farren@ulster.ac.uk or call 028 71375575 to request further information and an application form. Closing date for receipt of applications is Friday, the 20th of March, at 5pm. |

Older people within our community have told us they need to be able to access a range of flexible intervention services, which help to support them living independently, and help combat social isolation. Older People have said they want to be able to call upon person centered, locally provided, preventative services to help them enhance their health and wellbeing supporting them to live independent fulfilled lives in their own communities for as long as possible. Flexi Care is one of a number of Western Board preventative services, intended to augment independent living for older people and support them in their vision. The Western Trust on behalf of the Board plan to shortly tender to commission Flexi care services across the Western Trust area. The tender will be for one year initially, commencing in April 2009, with the possibility of extension of contract following review. Flexi Care will comprise of a range of low-level intervention services. Based on need, and provided on an ad hoc basis Flexi Care will provide low-level support, particularly for clients who have no significant family support network. Flexi Care will be provided by the local community within the local community, at a time and place to help the service user, and even their carer. It will consists of a range of life enhancing services which aid people who are experiencing difficulty maintaining their independence, but who do not necessarily qualify for domiciliary care services. It will consist of a range of services, which take the form of: Shopping: Providing support to enable clients to undertake shopping themselves, or undertaking shopping for them, this could also include help with unpacking. Individual support: For example, providing a one to one time-limited service such as chaperone, befriending, through bereavement, accompanying someone to a healthcare appointment, collecting prescriptions, undertaking one-off cleaning tasks. Handy Help home maintenance scheme: Providing essential but light maintenance services such as: decluttering; odd jobs for example, light bulb changing, repair dripping taps; and safety and security measures for example, fitting of smoke alarm, fitting of key safes.
Flexi care will: Be delivered in a partnership approach by a local consortium of organisations focusing on older people Be co-ordinated by a single lead organisation within the community, co-ordinating services and linking with the Trust. Be provided across each of the Trust’s four Localities (Limavady & Waterside, Cityside, Strabane & Omagh, Fermanagh). Focus on the promotion of health and well-being, linking with other local services within the community providing support/advice/information on for example, health promotion messages and practices.
It is anticipated that the provision of Flexi care will promote the development and provision of additional local community services in response to local need. The public tender is due to issue this Friday 13th March 2009 - see Belfast Telegraph and it will instruct the reader to access further information form the Central Services Agency’s website www.csarss.net – with a closing date of 1st April. |

Support group in Clooney Hall Centre
A support group for those with a cancer diagnosis will be starting in Clooney Hall Centre beginning on Wednesday 18 March from 1.00pm until 3.00pm and running each Wednesday afternoon until Easter. This is an initial series of meetings to see the level of support for such a group and to assess how we can help meet the ongoing needs of the participants. Action Cancer has offered to provide assistance with speakers and facilitators if this is required while the group is starting up. It is hoped however, in the longer term, that the group members themselves will decide the format of the afternoons and determine the length and frequency of the meetings We hope attending this group will give you the opportunity for a relaxing and sometimes informative session, meeting with others over a cup of tea or coffee and biscuits. If you are interested in attending this group, I would ask you to contact our office to leave your name and a contact phone number. This request is made so we can estimate numbers attending and also be able to contact you should there be any change in arrangements for this meeting. The information gathered from these calls will not be used for any other purpose. Should you decide to attend we will ask you to complete a form on attendance that will repeat these basic details but also give emergency contact details to be used in the event you are unwell while attending. All such information will be treated with the utmost confidentiality and be made available only to people who are leading or organising the group. Please feel free to contact us for more information: Tel/Fax: (028) 7134 8531 or Email: manager@clooneyhall.org.uk, Website: www.methodistcitymission.com |

Does Art Matter Here? Was the question being raised by local arts organisation director Oliver Green of Greater Shantallow Community Arts this week as he launched a campaign to encourage local residents and the citizens of Derry to sign a petition in support of local Arts provision for one of the most deprived areas of the North of Ireland. In unveiling the 20ft high bill board, Mr Green said, “whilst everyone recognises that in the current depressed economic climate people in our city are suffering greatly because of job losses and factory closures it is vitally important to remember the potential that the Arts in its many forms and mediums can bring to our communities and city and as we seek to create better futures and opportunities for all our children and young people we should see the Creative Industries as a very real and potentially very profitable way forward for our future workforces. Derry will never return to the shirt factory generations and call centres will relocate to their cheapest bidder. The real potential of our city lies in investing in our people, in their creativity and their ingenuity and so when we see funding being cut, withdrawn and refused to a local arts organisation like ours that has as its core the aspiration to encourage our people, especially our young people to aspire to reach their full creative potential then we must ask the question, Does Art Matter Here? In places like Galliagh, Shantallow and other working class areas across our city or do those in positions of power within different government departments and bodies feel that the arts is only for the few or should only be available within select Cultural Quarters? In asking people to sign our petition and to speak out in support of the Arts at a community level, we are supporting the stated government policy of bringing ‘Art to the Heart of communities’ and we are encouraging those in positions of power to back up the nice words with real actions and invest in our communities and our children’s creative future. Mr Green finished by saying I would appeal to all the people of our city and our public representatives to support our petition by emailing your comments to info@gscaderry.com or by signing our petition at one of our local supermarkets and show your support for community arts and a creative future for all our people. |

The Pajama Game 1950's Musical
The Pajama Game is a musical set in late 1950' America, taking place in the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory, where workers are being underpaid and the Union is trying to come up with solutions for getting their deserved higher wages. Of course, there is the love interest between the new head of the Factory and the head of the Union grievance Committee. The show wouldn't be complete without the show-stopping dance numbers, Steam Heat, Hernando's Hideaway and Once A Year Day. The show has a cast of 54 students from Enniskillen Collegiate, Erne Integrated, Mount Lourdes, Portora, St. Fanchea's, St. Michael's and Southwest College. NOT TO BE MISSED! Shows are Wednesday through Sunday at 7:30 PM Sharp at St. Fanchea's on the Coa Road ENNISKILLEN Co Fermanagh opposite the MOT Testing Centre. Tickets are available at Portora Royal School Enniskillen Reception, Monday through Friday, 10 to 4 or at the door (though tickets are going fast and may be best purchased in advance). |
