Ministers announce introduction of new transport scheme for rural dwellers

Transport Minister Conor Murphy and Rural Development Minister Michelle Gildernew have announced the introduction of two new rural transport schemes.
These new schemes have been developed to help meet the transport needs of rural dwellers.
The new Dial-a-Lift services will be available to members of Rural Community Transport Partnerships. These services are similar to the Door-to-Door services that are available in urban areas and are designed to allow individuals who have limited access to transport to get to local services and facilities.

The second scheme announced today is the Assisted Rural Transport Scheme (ARTS). This scheme is being supported by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and will allow eligible members of Rural Community Transport Partnerships to obtain concessionary travel when using community transport. This initiative, which is being launched as a pilot, will help ease the financial burden on rural dwellers.
The Ministers fully recognise the importance of transport for people in rural areas and their Departments have worked closely together to introduce the Dial-a-Lift scheme and Assisted Rural Transport Scheme pilot. Both these initiatives will improve access to essential local services for users and will be available from early December 2009.

Trócaire marks ten years of ethical Christmas gifts

Trócaire has launched its Christmas gift campaign marking ten years of ethical Christmas gifts from people in
Ireland to people in the developing world.
Since the campaign began people in
Ireland, north and south, have bought over 600,000 gifts that have changed the lives of over a million people living in the world’s poorest countries.

The gifts are real gifts for real people, such as Burmese fishermen whose lives were devastated by a cyclone last year. Thousands of fishermen and their families were left without an income. One of the gifts this year will replace boats and nets for these fishermen and enable them to rebuild their lives, earn a living and feed their families.
The gifts give families a helping hand out of chronic poverty and every gift bought here finds a very special home with a poor family overseas.

Global gifts range in price from £9 to £180  including school lunches for children in Zimbabwe (£9), chickens for families in East Africa (£13), vegetable gardens for Indian families (£22), life-saving food for families in Mozambique (£30), goats for families in Zimbabwe (£40), education for young people in Burma (£63), clean water for people around the world (£90), fishing boats and nets for fishermen in Burma (£135) and houses for families living in desperate conditions (£180).

To purchase a Trocaire Global Gift this Christmas, or see them in action, log onto www.trocaire.org/globalgift or call Freephone 0800 912 1200 (1850 408 408 in ROI).   The gifts are also available to purchase locally in Veritas (Derry & Letterkenny), The Holy Shop (Derry & Strabane), Café
del Mundo, Café Nervosa, An Gaeláras, Void and the Gasyard.

Debut Performance of Galliagh Based Theatre Companies: “Arsenic & Old Lace”

Derry’s newest drama group “Here We Go Theatre Company” will take to the stage of the Waterside Theatre for their debut performance on Thursday & Friday night bringing the classic Joseph Kesselring play Arsenic & Old Lace to “life”. This enchanting tale of two loveable old sisters, who develop a deadly and poisonous habit, will thrill audiences and have people rolling in the isles.

“Here We Go Theatre Company” which is based in Galliagh and is a collective of new and experienced actors, directors, writers and general Theatre enthusiasts has come together this year as part of Greater Shantallow Community Arts , Arts in the Community Programme and have been supported by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland  to give local people the opportunity to get involved and enjoy and develop the long tradition of theatre and drama that has been part of Derry for so long.

Speaking ahead of the debut performance of Arsenic & Old Lace , Oliver Green, Artistic Director of Greater Shantallow Community  Arts we are delighted to have supported the development of  “Here We Go Theatre Company”, the new vibrancy and energy that each and ever member of this new company have brought to their debut performance and all the hard work and effort that everyone has put into this their first independent production has been truly inspirational, I have no doubt that Arsenic & Old Lace be a wonderful success and that Here We Go Theatre Company will evolve as a huge asset to the development of the Arts here in the Northwest.
