Community Reference Group for Derry~Londonderry & North-West

Members will be aware of NWCN’s close involvement with the ongoing regeneration process via its position on the city’s Strategy Board.  Recent weeks and months have seen activity intensify yet further with the commencement of Sectoral Working Groups, and the Planning & Co-ordination Team (PCT) working to support them.  There is now a Community & Voluntary sector presence on this PCT (as well as an expanding presence on the actual Strategy Board) a role which requires significant support from the wider sector.

The Community Reference Group has been conceived, by NWCN and others, to cover a number of elements such as: a platform to share views, experiences, and insights on the regeneration process from a community perspective; support to individuals and groups participating in e.g. the Sectoral Working Groups; a developing sense of collectivity for the community & voluntary sector around regeneration and beyond this into Community Planning and the continually changing/challenging landscape for grassroots community activity.

You will find attached notes of the most recent (second) meeting of this evolving Community Reference Group, which includes a list of those who were invited – there is no barrier to participating in the Community Reference Group.  Your motivation to help renew the sense of collective, whilst prizing the diversity, within the sector is the key ingredient sought.

A regular meeting pattern has not yet been established for the CRG but if you wish to be included in future notifications, please contact Colin Devine, NWCN Co-ordinator at your earliest convenience on (028) 7127 9090
or email: colin@nwcn.org

National Lottery looking for 'viral' idea to celebrate 15th anniversary

To celebrate its 15th anniversary, The National Lottery is launching a nationwide search for a unique viral idea. Since its launch in 1994, National Lottery players have raised £25 million a week for Good Causes across the UK, with grants given out across the arts, sport, heritage, charities, health, education and the environment. These grants have changed people's lives for the better, and had a positive impact on communities all across the UK.
A viral video is a YouTube style video that is spread across the internet and the National Lottery is inviting budding filmmakers to submit an idea for a viral video which shows how the National Lottery has changed your life or the life of your community for the better.
The judges will be looking for creative, simple, thought-provoking films, rather than ideas for lavish or overcomplicated productions. They will pick their top five ideas, and these five finalists will then have to 'sell' their ideas to the public with a short film which will be uploaded to YouTube and Vimeo, where the public will vote. The idea with the most votes from the public wins.
The winner will then work alongside an award-winning digital agency and film director Nick Hamm, on a one-day shoot with a film crew, lighting, wardrobe, hair and make-up, to turn the winning idea into a viral video. The viral video will then be distributed across the web.  Deadline:
31st August 2009

Public meeting with Margaret Ritchie, Minister for Social Development

Margaret Ritchie, Minister for Social Development will be holding a public meeting at the Verbal Arts Centre in Derry-Londonderry on 20 August 2009.  This will be an informal meeting and the public will be invited to ask questions and air their views on the issues facing the Department.  The aim of this meeting will be to explore her work as Minister and to seek views from the general public on the challenges facing her work as Minister and for the Department.

The Minister will discuss the challenges in tackling poverty and disadvantage in local communities through her work as Social Development Minister.  She wishes to garner opinion and ideas around how her policy responsibilities can facilitate a ‘normalising’ of Northern Ireland society following the years of conflict and stalemate.  In particular how segregation in housing and other aspects of community life in Northern Ireland can be addressed in order, for example, to reduce religious and racist tensions in the years ahead.

The event will take place in the evening from 7.00 - 9.00 pm.  The meeting will open with tea and coffee and there will be an opportunity for the general public to put questions to the Minister and engage in open discussion with a view to what the future priorities should be for her as Minister for Social Development.

The Minister would welcome input from individuals and organisations that work on delivering services to our most disadvantaged communities and would very much welcome your participation in this event.
