Commissioned Research on Suicide Prevention

This Commissioned Research Call is in direct response to the recognition by the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety (DHSSPS) of the high priority for greater understanding of the complex needs of those affected by suicide in Northern Ireland.

The Northern Ireland Suicide Prevention Strategy and Action Plan, "Protect Life - A Shared Vision", published in October 2006 highlights the need for further research in a number of areas relating to suicide prevention. The DHSSPS in conjunction with the Health & Social Care (HSC) R&D Office has therefore undertaken to commission a programme of research in the area of suicide prevention.

The HSC R&D Office has already commissioned a research project in partnership with the Belfast Health & Social Care Trust  and the Southern Health & Social Care Trust  entitled 'Providing meaningful care: learning from experiences of suicidal men to inform mental health services' which focuses upon young suicidal men. This two and a half year research project commenced in March 2007. It is hoped that the findings of the overall commissioned programme of research will prove valuable in helping the Department implement the "Protect Life - A Shared Vision" Strategy and Action Plan, which can be accessed using the following link: http://www.dhsspsni.gov.uk/phnisuicidepreventionstrategy_action_plan-3.pdf

The deadline for receipt of applications is Friday 12 December 2008 at 4.00pm.

Application forms and guidance notes can be obtained from the R&D Office or from our website: http://www.centralservicesagency.ni.nhs.uk/display/rdo

Have your say on Community Health Provision and win £100!

Derry Healthy Cities is the lead partner for a Big Lottery Fund application for the North West Community Well-being Project to the Big Lottery Fund Safe and Well Programme.  Holywell Consultancy has been contracted to assist Derry Healthy Cities with their bid.

This project will increase and enhance the provision of community based health and community safety activities as well as building and strengthening partnerships between agencies in the North West. The project will place the service user centrally in the design of the services that they will use thus increasing community ownership throughout the Derry City Council, Limavady Borough Council and Strabane District Council areas.

As the final element of the consultation process to inform the bid to the Safe and Well Programme we are seeking the views of the local community through this brief questionnaire. We are keen to hear your views on community health provision and would appreciate it if you could take a few minutes to complete and submit this questionnaire.

One lucky respondent, to be drawn at random, will receive £100 so complete and submit the form to be in with a chance to win!

There is a short window of opportunity for you to submit your response – please ensure that your questionnaire is submitted by 21 October 2008. Questionnaires can only be submitted online at: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=Szrdrk1S2Eb8xdd573DW6A_3d_3d

Northern Ireland Anti–Poverty Network Event

In order to mark 17th October ‘International Day for the Eradication of Poverty’ NIAPN is holding a public event which will provide a platform for people experiencing poverty to speak out loud and be heard.  Started 25 years ago by people living in poverty, this is the one day of the year where like minded people stand up and say that poverty and social exclusion is totally unacceptable.  It is a day when those experiencing poverty have their voices heard!

In light of the network’s current funding crisis your support at this event would be greatly appreciated.  We need to demonstrate the strength of the network and its impact for those it works with and on behalf of.

The NIAPN Annual General Meeting will be held at 10.30am-11.00am on the day and will be followed by this open platform event 11.00am-12.00pm at Unison NI, Unit 4 Galway House, 165 York Street, Belfast BT15 1AL.

The venue allows for some display stands, should you wish to display information materials please contact the NIAPN office in advance.  NIAPN cannot provide display stands.

Launch of 'A Piece of Me, a Piece of Us' Quilt

The IPOD Young Women’s Group at The Women’s Centre, in conjunction with Eden Place Arts Centre would like to invite you to the launch of “a piece of me, a piece of us” quilt that will take place on Tuesday 14th October 10.15 – 11.15 at the verbal arts centre.

The IPOD* Young Women’s Project is an innovative and dynamic project that runs from the Women Centre four times per week. “A piece of me, a piece of us” quilt was crafted in the emotional health programme and made in conjunction with Eden Place Arts Centre. The quilt was inspired by “The politics of Chilean Arpilleras” exhibition held at the Harbour Museum April 2008.

The quilt consists of seven individual “arpilleras”, five of which were created by the participants of the project and the additional two were completed by the IPOD project coordinator and the community art facilitator. The group met over a 10 week period. Stories were shared and peer support was offered. Each piece offers a window into the life of the young woman who made it and gives an insight into what is important to each of them on a daily basis.

The Creggan Story

Friday 10 & Saturday 11 October at 8 pm

After its acclaimed performance in Creggan last weekend “The Creggan Story” comes to the big stage in The Playhouse at St Columb’s Hall. The play which is produced by The Playhouse for Café Creggan as part of their 60 years anniversary celebration of the Creggan Estate, is a drama about the indomitable spirit of three women, whose lives become inextricably bound together when they move to Creggan Estate.

The marital and family relationships differ but their ways of coping with the joys, sorrows and challenges of their families pushes them apart and finally draws them together. Against a background of building up a community, getting to know and depend upon neighbourliness, striving to better themselves through employment, education and music, they learn that they are better than they think they are. Those circumstances called for them to give more than they thought they were capable of giving.

Tickets: £10/ £7, For further information see www.derryplayhouse.co.uk <http://www.derryplayhouse.co.uk>
