Little Orchids is through to the Peoples Millions – Please support…

Little Orchids Childrens Centre is a charitable organisation based in Gransha Park.  We provide therapeutic intervention, respite and support for pre-school children with special needs and their parents and carers.  We cater for children aged 3 months to 4 years and also work with parents providing one-to-one counselling and support.  Parents are also given the opportunity to receive training on various issues.
The centre has secured a place in the final of UTV / The Big Lottery funds Peoples Millions.  The prize, £50,000 will be used to create an outside sensory garden/children’s play area which will enhance the lives of young children and their parents.
This play area will be for the use of the children who attend the centre during their morning sessions but will be open to the general public during weekends and school holidays.
Little Orchids night in the spotlight is Monday 23rd November. A short video about this project and the competing project will also be shown on the news between 6.00pm and 6.30pm.  Voting is by telephone and lines will be open from 9am to midnight.  The number will be released by UTV, The Daily Mirror and on the website www.peoplesmillions.org.uk on the day.
This centre has so much to offer its community but for this project to be successful we need your help.  Please give us your vote.

Do your service users need advice?

Do you want to make sure they get the best advice possible? Free training is available for your organisation to help you:

-Provide information to users in response to advice enquiries

-Enable users to access advice services

-Help users find other sources of advice or information that will be of use to them

-Safeguard your users’ confidentiality

We offer this free training, with lunch included, to help local organisations that do not have paid, trained or dedicated information and advice staff. The course is designed to help them provide basic information to service users or signpost them to advice providers.

The training is also useful for local organisations; that need to train new employees/volunteers to provide information and signposting to service users. Although the course is organised by Age Concern and Help the Aged, it is relevant to all user groups, not just older people. Sessions will take place in November in Belfast and Derry.

Storytelling Sessions

Towards Understanding and Healing is offering a six two-hour storytelling programme including an optional residential experience for people who have been affected by the conflict in Northern Ireland.

We are also offering facilitators and those interested in becoming facilitators the opportunity to learn about our storytelling methods, enabling them to facilitate sessions within your own community/group.

Our programmes will be of interest to victims and survivors, those working with victims and survivors and anyone wishing to work with them.

Storytelling in a safe and secure environment gives people the opportunity to begin to articulate their personal stories and listen to other stories or “truths” in a respectful way and begin to move towards a peaceful future in our community.  Story telling programmes are led up by experienced facilitators.

If you are interested in participating in a storytelling session or learning about our facilitation methods, please contact us on 028 7126 7519

Dates and venues can be arranged to suit participating individuals or groups.

Opportunity Youth, Reaching them young project.

Reaching them young is a community based project working with young people in the Derry city area. It is for young people:

-Aged 11-21

-At risk of exclusion within their communities

-Currently excluded or not engaging positively within their communities

-On whatever issues are identified as contributing to exclusion

-On a voluntary basis

Reaching them young will support young people to understand themselves, support communities to understand young people and provide opportunities for young people and their communities to reconnect. We will do this through one to one mentoring, group work, an education trip, a community project and a residential.

We will use a holistic approach and will work in partnership with the communities.

New park, ride and share facility opens in North West

Transport Minister Conor Murphy welcomed the opening of new Park & Ride/Park & Share facility at Drumahoe in Derry which will serve over 120 cars.
The Minister said: "This site will play a vital role in encouraging commuters to car share or to complete their journey by public transport. By choosing sustainable alternatives to the private car for all or part of their journey travellers can save themselves money, help reduce traffic congestion and improve the environment.

The work on the site has been taken forward by the Department for Regional Development Roads Service.  The new site will be served by Translink Goldline Express 212 coach services for passengers travelling between Derry and Belfast.
Aileen Gault Head of Travelwise NI which promotes sustainable travel said: "The car park situated beside Drumahoe Bridge has spaces for 118 cars with an additional four spaces reserved for disabled drivers, and will be served by two new bus stops on the A6.   It will provide a secure and convenient parking place for motorists wanting to park and to catch the Goldline Express Service on the Belfast route."

The site is enclosed by a secure fence, is fully lit and will be covered by a security camera.

Camara – Computers for Africa

Camara take in used computers, refurbish them and send them to schools in Africa.  At present Camara are working in seven countries in Africa: Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.

Camara would like to thank a number of community and voluntary organisations who have recently donated computers, namely Gingerbread and Women’s Resource and Development Group.  They are constantly looking to source computers which meet the minimum specification of Pentium 3 Processor, 256 RAM and 20GB hard drive.  They are always looking for mice and power leads, as often they receive computers without them.

It costs £50 to refurbish and send a computer to Africa so any contribution is most welcome. Camara can organise collection when there are over 10 items of equipment.

Contact Ann Fitzpatrick, Camara Project Manager on T: 028 9033 2470 or E: belfast@camara.ie.
