£40m Good Cause Cash For NI Communities

People across Northern Ireland will benefit from a massive £40 million investment from the Big Lottery Fund over the next few years.  The Big Lottery Fund unveiled the BIG Proposals for Northern Ireland, a document that gives details on the types of programmes we hope to run up until 2012.

Last year the Big Lottery Fund carried out a wide-ranging consultation to find out how local communities wanted future grant programmes for the largest of the National Lottery good cause distributors to be developed.

Feedback from that consultation has helped develop a range of programme proposals valued at £40 million to support some of Northern Ireland’s most disadvantaged communities.

A series of events and meetings will take place across Northern Ireland between now and the end of November 2009 giving Northern Ireland communities the chance to have their say and tell us what they think of the funding proposals.

The Big Proposals for Northern Ireland gives details on how future grant could be developed in the following areas:

Alcohol Related Harm: A £5 million programme that will provide funding for up to four years for projects that reduce the harm to people, families and communities directly affected by alcohol misuse.

Young People at Risk: A £10 million programme providing funding for up to five years for activities that give young people opportunities to reconnect with school, society, employment, their families and their communities. Older People at Risk: A £10 million programme providing funding for up to four years for activities giving older people the opportunity to live more independent lives and contribute to their community.

Space and Place: A £15 million programme providing funding to improve community relations by making better use of existing spaces and places where people live and creating safe places to play, to meet others and take part in activities such as sport, learning and health promotion.

It is likely that all the programmes will be opened by Autumn 2010.

The Big Proposals document is also available on our website www.biglotteryfund.org.uk

Full details of the Big Lottery Fund programmes and grant awards are available on:www.biglotteryfund.org.uk

Community Relations Training with Derry City Council

Please find attached information on a free 4 day accredited Community Relations Training course being offered through Derry City Council's Community Relations Officers.  There are 10 places available.

'Epilogues' is a conflict transformation programme, which has been developed by Gaslight Productions.   Delivered by Gaslight, the programme is a series of facilitated workshops, through which participants will explore the underlying causes of 'the conflict' in and about 'Northern Ireland'.

The programme consists of eight modules exploring: Violence, Loss, Revenge, Forgiveness, Justice and Human Rights.  Within inclusive workshops, where every view is respected but equally where every view can be challenged, 'epilogues' will explore the conflict through the perspectives of people who were part of it, or suffered as a result of it, and found themselves compelled to react to circumstances unfolding around them with what perspective they had at the time.  It should be noted that this programme is very challenging, hard hitting and can be emotional for the participants.

The workshops will run on the following dates:

Thursday 12th November; Thursday 19th November; Thursday 26th November; Thursday 3rd December

To apply please return a completed application form (attached) by Friday 30th October to angela.askin@derrycity.gov.uk

STRIVE 2 Work

STRIVE 2 Work is a unique three-week employability workshop offered by Cresco Trust Ltd to people who are out of work in the L’Derry and Strabane areas. The workshop helps people increase their chances of getting and sustaining employment whilst acknowledging the fact that some people require extra assistance to overcome the barriers that prevent them from finding and keeping work.

Over the course of 14 days trained facilitators deliver an exciting programme that enhances the skills levels of participants and offers guidance to develop their work aspirations.

Cresco has formed a unique partnership with Business in the Community to ensure that, when participants complete the workshop, they have access to a pool of vacancies and ongoing support via a ‘Workforce Buddies’ mentoring scheme. The mentoring scheme is aimed at helping people settle into the workplace and make a successful transition to the world of employment.

Business in the Community will also continue to support employers as they address the challenges of helping those who have recently been unemployed, long-term unemployed or economically inactive make the transition to work. Cresco will continue to work with those participants not securing employment to enhance their employability and overcome their barriers to work.
