Could your organisation survive without the work of your volunteers? In many cases the answer is probably no. Due to the overwhelming demand of the previous two years and through the kind support of Lloyds TSB Foundation, Derry Credit Union and Northwest Counselling, we will be once again hosting the Foyle Volunteer Awards on Thursday 4th December at the Everglades Hotel. Why not take time out to nominate someone from your organisation to be recognised and say a sincere thank you for their contribution to the communities in the Derry City and Strabane & District council areas. There is also a special group category for people wishing to nominate a group of people who really have made a difference. The aim of the final celebration is not to favour one volunteer or group over another but to highlight and promote the variety and diversity of volunteering activity within the council areas. All nominees will be recognised during the evening celebration. In order to raise the profile of the work that often goes unnoticed and unseen we are urging you to submit a nomination so that a wide variety of volunteering activity and the people who undertake this work can be recognised. I have attached a nomination form and would encourage you to photocopy this and use as many times as you wish. Remember vote early, vote often and take time to recognise your volunteering champions! |

Caravaggio Lecture – Not to be Missed!
As part of their Enlightenment project, Greater Shantallow Community Arts will present the second of a series of art history talks by local painter and art historian, Joe Campbell. The talks are part of the same project that placed the giant Mona Lisa on the gable wall at Bloomfield Park. The Enlightenment project aims to bring art into the heart of the community with a series of giant posters, erected on billboards in the Greater Shantallow area, showing beautiful works of art from the past and the present and a series of informal complimentary talks on key moments in art history. Following the success of his first lecture, Everything You ever wanted to Know About the History of Art but were too shy to ask, Joe’s second lecture will focus on one artist in particular - Caravaggio. The quintessential tortured hero, Caravaggio’s life was one of tragedy and violence coupled with genius. This Arts Council of Northern Ireland sponsored lecture is also a chance to view Joe Campbell’s own particular insight into the artist, an oil painted copy of Caravaggio’s Taking of Christ, which took seven months to create and is one of only seven such copies in the world. The talk will commence at 7:00pm sharp until 9.00pm, on Tuesday 14th October at 7:00pm at St Brigid’s College, Glengalliagh Road, Derry, entry is free and everyone is welcome. For further details contact the Greater Shantallow Community Arts office 71357443 |
