BBC Children in Need launch new programme: Fun & Friendship

Fun and Friendship is a new grant programme from BBC Children in Need, which is specifically targeted towards organisations working with disabled young people between 12 and 18 years. The purpose of the programme is to help projects to create and enhance opportunities for disabled young people to meet friends and have a good time, as independently as possible. The £3 million grants programme was set up following commissioned research revealing a significant lack of opportunity for independent socialising for disabled young people, often leading to feelings of loneliness and isolation. BBC Children in Need are targeting organisations that can provide these opportunities for friendship, and identify and address the barriers disabled young people face as teenagers growing up.

The Fun and Friendship programme will work with projects that take place over three years, and it expects to make up to 12 grants of up to £300,000 each across the UK. The scheme is designed for organisations with the infrastructure and experience to support the participation and leadership of disabled young people, and those who are willing to engage and share with the network of Fun and Friendship projects and others in the field of disability.  The primary focus of applications should be social interaction, with disabled young people actively engaged in determining how that develops, combined with a commitment to sharing what is learned in the process.

You can apply for a grant online at http://www.bbc.co.uk/pudsey/grants/funandfriendship.shtml

The final deadline is midnight on 31 July 2009.

NESTA Programme 'Age Unlimited' Call for Ideas

The National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (NESTA) £650,000 Age Unlimited scheme will look to fund a number of demonstration projects that will help older people lead more active and productive lives.  Through their new programme, NESTA is looking to support up to 20 practical projects that will test and demonstrate new models that will help the nation work on these issues. Businesses, local authorities, social enterprises, trade unions, and third sector organisations, such as voluntary and community groups, are asked to come up with innovative ideas under one of the following themes:
Age Readiness – projects that will experiment with new methods that encourage people over the age of 50 to plan for and take actions to enable them to age well.
Age Management - projects that focus on helping older people to continue working beyond the statutory retirement age.
Grants ranging from £500 to £50,000 are available, with proposals assessed against the following criteria:
-Whether the idea has the potential to make a significant social impact by supporting older people to age well.
-Innovation and how the project clearly shows a new approach, or implements existing ideas in a fresh way.
-That the idea is ‘user-centered’ and that older people have been integral in the planning and development.
-Feasibility.
-Sustainability.
-Whether the project has the potential to be transferred and replicated in a wider context.
-Value for money.
The 19th June is the deadline for submitting ideas following which around 40 entries will be given advice and support to develop their ideas further, before a panel of experts chooses up to 20 successful projects that will share the funding pot.  For further information about Age Unlimited, visit the NESTA website at:

Rural Community Network’s annual Summer School

Thursday 11 and Friday 12 June 2009, University of Ulster, Coleraine.

Policy and social change… conversation, demonstration or both?

This year’s theme will explore the links between community development on the ground and how it should link to policy change.  Delegates will hear from Tony McCusker, former Permanent Secretary at Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, and Brian Harvey, independent social research consultant.

A highlight of the Summer School this year will be a flexible interactive workshop developed in partnership with Partisan Productions to develop policy proposals for a rural transport strategy for Northern Ireland.  While the focus is on rural transport, these techniques can be used for other policy and lobbying issues.

Free places for Rural Community Network’s Summer School still available for community groups!!  Please note that if you are only able to attend part of the Summer School, the cost will be reduced to reflect this.

For further information and application form for free places, contact Zoe on 028 8676 6670 or email zoe@ruralcommunitynetwork.org

Steps into Dialogue

Community Dialogue invites you to the official launches of our new PEACE III Project “Steps into Dialogue”.

Given that our project has a Northern Ireland and cross border remit, we have decided to hold two launches in order to facilitate as many groups and individuals as possible to join us at these events.

To compliment our major dialogue programme, another step in the process of transforming understanding in this project is entitled “Unravelling the Jargon”.

It is about taking complicated documents and reports and reproducing them in summary form in a much more accessible, user friendly format. We hope this will encourage people from all walks of life to access these documents, understand them better and make more informed choices about the relevance to their lives, the future and society in general as a result.

Venues, dates and times are as follows:

Monday 22nd June 2009 - Farset International, Springfield Road, Belfast 5.30 pm to 7.30 pm

Recycling help needed

I managed several recycling plants in the
UK but have returned to Derry to hopefully set up a small recycling entity, cans initially, then cardboard and plastics.
I have been collecting aluminium cans in the Bishop Street/Brandywell area of the city for the past three months. I started off collecting cans along the banks of the Foyle, firstly, to tidy the place up and secondly to recycle the cans.
I am currently looking at premises where I hope to set-up and develop a collection infra-structure to collect cans from pubs, cafes, offices etc.
I have been in liaison with companies in the
UK who have provided excellent educational material, so I am currently planning to implement initiatives within schools etc from September onwards.
I have been collecting cans from areas where either street drinkers/young people gather to drink i.e.
Brook Park, Foyle Valley Railway Museum, Derry Walls etc.
If your organisation or sister organisations know of any hot spots, I will pop round and collect the cans on a regular basis or take part in any "Clean the Street" initiatives.
I can be contacted via the following, Phil Thompson E Mail:  eco-can@live.co.uk or mobile: 07598 875 230
