The End Isn’t the End

Men’s Action Network with the support of funding from Derry City Council are offering a eight week  program for men who are currently going through, or have  gone through, the ending of a personal relationship or marriage . Regardless of the reasons as to why or how the relationship has ended the separation will have meant a change to the personal commitment, emotional investment and shared experiences that form the basis of relationships. Additionally if there have been children within the relationship maintaining and managing relationships as a separated father can also have many challenges.

MAN’s aim is to facilitate a safe supportive space where a maximum of 10 men can voice their personal thoughts, feelings and concerns around the often traumatic experiences of dealing with the loss of a relationship or marriage. It is also aim our aim to support men and help them cope with the change/loss of access to children, family and social networks which can often follow as a consequence and to assist men against feeling that the ending of their relationship is the ending of their world, their life or meaningful relationships.

The program will invite men to:  Speak about the emotional impact of the loss of their relationship,

Look at the life changes which have occurred as a result of the loss, Explore how to manage the more unhealthy aspects of these changes in a healthier way, Apply new self awareness / learning to aid present and future relationships, Speak about how changes to access as a parent may affect them, Gain insight; get support with possible parenting issues which may arise as a result.

As part of the program one of the eight sessions will also be given over to a legal representative who will outline and answer general enquires on the law regarding such matters as sharing assets, child access/contact or other orders. If you are a man who feels they would like to take part in, or find out more about, this eight week program ,scheduled to run on Tuesday nights, please contact Men’s Action Network at 2 Dacre Terrace before Friday 10th October 2008 in one of the following ways: Tel: 02871377777, Email: man_in_derry@yahoo.co.uk

New Production Examines Elder Abuse

Sole Purpose Productions presents SEE NO EVIL by Patricia Byrne, Directed by Shauna Kelpie.
Danny Quinn lives on his own in a remote rural area in
Ireland. He is 89 years of age. Tara Burke, his niece, comes to visit when she can. The neighbors’ are looking after him. They are trusted family friends. As time goes by Tara begins to sense that something strange is happening. Something sinister is in the air. Something that no one will believe.  This gripping play examines the issue of elder abuse. It looks at financial, emotional and psychological abuse. It illustrates the subtle dynamic that exists between the victim and the perpetrator and the difficulties in recognising this kind of abuse. The cast are Kevin McCallion, Rea Curran and Patricia Byrne. The play has been developed in consultation with Age Concern Derry and the Western Health and Social Services Board. It is funded by Derry City Council and the Lloyds TSB Foundation for Northern Ireland. Joe Brennan’s new play “Stone Soup”

Joe Brennan’s new play Stone Soup (directed by Maeve Sweeney) is a highly original retelling of the classic folktale, with a very definite Donegal flavour. The play is full of playfulness, movement, song and original stories.

Stone Soup tells the story of life in a small village, mainly through the eyes of two children, taking each of the four seasons in turn.  The rhythm of life in the village is upset one year when the sun shines for too long and then the rains come for too long in the summer. The harvest is small, no one is in the mood for celebration and hearts are hardening. It is down to Lus na Gréine to bring warmth and reassurance to the village with the help of a ‘magic’ stone.

An Grianán Theatre, Letterkenny.

Monday 13th October, 10am and 12.30pm

Tuesday 14th October, 10am and 4pm

Stone Soup is aimed at children under 7 and their families and is suitable for pre-school and school groups.
