General Medical Council seek members of the public……

Members of the public with an interest in health care are needed to participate in a Reference Community for the General Medical Council (GMC).

The Reference Community will be formed of 25 public members and 25 registered medical practitioners from England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and it is designed to help inform and influence the policies and decisions of the GMC. While members will not be asked to make policy decisions, they will be asked for their personal and professional opinions on a range of topics, such as:

The ethical guidelines that doctors are required to follow;

The GMC website to make sure it is clear and easy to use, especially for members of the public;

The process by which a doctor is regularly appraised.

There are a variety of ways to contribute, including commenting on draft publications, replying to a poll or questionnaire, and attending occasional meetings that can fit around personal or professional commitments. Ideally, each member will give around 20 to 30 hours per year, but this could vary according to individual circumstances.

People from a wide variety of backgrounds and locations are needed. Since the GMC already has ways to engage with professional bodies and interest groups, members should bring only their own opinions and not represent those of a particular organization.

For more information, visit www.gmcappointments.org.uk. The deadline for applications is 18 May 2009.

Bordering on the Ridiculous

Have you a funny story to tell about crossing the border during the last 90 years? Artists in Creative Enterprise (ACE), a collective of writers, poets and actors based in Derry and Donegal, are looking for such stories from members of the public to help shape a proposed new play for theatre, an exhibition of writings, and a talking book titled, Bordering on the Ridiculous. If you would like to contribute a story, your identity will be kept confidential. So there is no danger of a belated visit from Customs & Excise! Patrick Kearney of ACE said: ‘At a time when there’s increasingly little for people to laugh at, we feel that sharing, documenting and dramatising funny stories emanating from everyday events along the border will serve as a welcome tonic, and will indeed help a lot of people to contrast negative memories and experiences of the border with more positive ones. The idea for the project arose when hearing a story from the 1940s, about a group of women from Belfast who crossed over the border from Derry to go to Buncrana to buy extra food at a time when everything was rationed. The women were out to buy tea and sugar and such basics, which were for one of the women’s wedding breakfast the next day. Anyway, on the way back over the border, the Swilly bus was stopped by the RUC, who proceeded to search the bus, and the passengers. One of the Belfast women, who was due to enter the convent within days, and who was smuggling tea concealed in her knickers, wet herself in nervous excitement. So whenever I hear the saying, ‘Is the tea wet?’ I can’t help but laugh.’ Stories can be sent before the end of September 2009 by post to ACE, ‘Bordering on the Ridiculous’, Creeve, Rathmullan, Donegal, or by email to info@artistsincreativeenterprise.com Alternatively, ACE would be prepared to meet with you in person to collect your story. The Bordering on the Ridiculous project will aim to produce a humorous and moving theatre script, a public exhibition of writings, and a talking book based on true events which took place on and around the border areas during times of peace and war.  Further information about the project is available at www.artistsincreativeenterprise.com or tele 074 9158836 / 086 1599068.

Roads Minister announces the preferred route for the Derry to Dungiven by-pass

Roads Minister Conor Murphy today announced the preferred route for the proposed 30 kilometre Derry to Dungiven dual carriageway, including a dual carriageway bypass of Dungiven.
Speaking in Dungiven, the Minister said: "This is great news for the people living in the north west region. I know how much this means for local people who I have met with many times to hear at first-hand their desire to progress this major road development. Today's announcement is a key milestone in the planning of this major road scheme for the northwest.
"Delivering balanced regional infrastructure is a key objective of my Department. Tackling regional disparities and reversing decades of under investment west of the Bann is vital. This investment is central to the Executive's priorities for Derry and for the northwest, as a whole, in maximising and realising its full economic potential.
"Selection of the preferred route proved challenging as there are many important environmental features and of course a rich and varied landscape in the northwest. I believe the preferred route is an equitable balance of socio-economic and environmental considerations.
“For the people of Dungiven, their town will be transformed. When the scheme opens, there will be a marked change in traffic through the town, with the bypass eventually removing up to 10,000 vehicles per day. Traffic related pollutants are expected to reduce significantly for many properties in Main Street and beyond. Air quality will improve with pollution dropping below National Air Quality Standards at all locations in Dungiven.
“I can assure the people of Dungiven that we are pressing ahead with this scheme as quickly as possible."

Public exhibitions to inform the public about the preferred route are being held at two venues:
The Dungiven Community Hall,
3 Chapel Road Dungiven on:
Wednesday 6 May from
1.00pm to 9.00pm & Thursday 7 May from 1.00pm to 9.00pm
The YMCA,
51 Glenshane Road, Drumahoe on:
Tuesday 12 May from
1.00pm to 9.00pm & Wednesday 13 May from 1.00 to 9.00pm
Staff from Roads Service and their advisors will be available to answer questions.
