Friday 20th November 2009

BBC Children in Need is the BBC's UK corporate charity.  The annual telethon is one of the highs of the BBC calendar and plenty of activity takes place all across the UK around this time to help raise those crucial pennies to help improve the lives of disadvantaged children and young people across the UK.  However, Pudsey is busy all year round helping to make sure the money you raise goes to those who need it the most.  Whether you work in a shop or office, factory or warehouse, why not shake your day up a bit and fundraise for this year's campaign.  Join in the Pudsey fun by stocking up on some great products to help raise funds for this year's Appeal.  Visit www.bbc.co.uk/pudsey/ for further information and lots of fundraising ideas.

Shared Space Journal – CRC

The Community Relations Council has just published the eighth volume of its research journal Shared Space. Published twice a year the journal addresses themes of peace, conflict and community relations in Northern Ireland.

Journal editor Ray Mullan says:

‘This eighth edition of Shared Space appears as Northern Ireland and the world struggles with the consequences of a global recession. On one level this may make our own local divisions seem small and irrelevant, but on another level it makes it even more important that we put in place strategies and policies that enable us as a society to overcome our divisions and thus better position ourselves to exploit opportunities for recovery when they come.’

‘Articles in this edition of Shared Space explore some of the areas where lessons can be learned and practical action planned. The research which underpins all these articles has been funded by the Community Relations Council. The UNESCO research project at the University of Ulster was funded by CRC under the EU Peace II Programme. The research behind the other articles was funded by CRC’s annual Research Award Scheme.’

In this volume

Copies of the Journal can be obtained free of charge from the Community Relations Council, 6 Murray Street Belfast, tel 028 90 227500.  To be put on the mailing list for future issues contact rmullan@nicrc.org.uk

New Charity Commissioner appointed

Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie has announced the appointment of a new local Charity Commissioner to the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland (CCNI).
Ms Rosemary Connolly was appointed to the position of ‘legally qualified’ Charity Commissioner. Legislation says that at least one Commissioner must be a barrister or solicitor of at least seven years standing and this appointment meets that requirement.

Margaret Ritchie said: "Ms Connolly has the skills and experience to make a valuable contribution to the work of the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland. She has an extensive legal background in equality and human rights issues and, along with her personal commitment to the work of the charitable sector, she will prove to be a real asset to the Commission. I welcome this appointment which will bring the total number of Commissioners up to seven, as required in the legislation.”
Margaret Ritchie commented on the progress made to date by the Commission in putting in place a regulatory framework for charities in Northern Ireland. She said: “I welcome the progress made to date by the Commission and plans are well advanced to have a charity register in place early next year.

The Commission has also launched the consultation on its draft public benefit guidance. This will be essential to allow charity trustees to prepare for registration and application of the public benefit test in 2010. The Commission has held public road show events across Northern Ireland. These have provided a valuable opportunity to discuss the public benefit requirements and to raise awareness of the wider regulatory requirements.
The appointment of Ms Connolly has been made in accordance with the Office of the Commissioner for Public Appointments for Northern Irelands Code of Practice. The appointment was made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, details of any political activity of the appointee, if any declared, have been published.
