Regional Food Programme re-opens for applications

The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) and Invest NI have temporarily reopened the local Regional Food Programme (NIRFP) for 2009/10.
DARD will be accepting applications up to
12pm on Friday 8 May 2009 which will provide the opportunity for eligible groups to submit proposals for funding.
The aim of the Programme is to promote quality regional food and to help increase its consumption by provision of financial support in five key areas namely:

Regional fairs & shows; Information programmes; Award ceremonies; Seminars & workshops; and Market intelligence/research.
State Aid restrictions mean that only agri-food groups representative of producers and/or processors who have local membership, registered charities or regional development agencies can apply.
Within the last year, the Northern Ireland Regional Food Programme (NIRFP) has supported a wide range of initiatives which have not only promoted local quality produce, but have also led to greater collaboration across the entire local agri-food sector.
Application forms for funding to deliver the programme can be obtained from:
Ms Una Hollywood, Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Room 516A
Dundonald House, Upper Newtownards Road, Belfast, BT4 3SB
Tel: 028 9052 4497 / E-mail: una.hollywood@dardni.gov.uk

Thomas Devlin Fund – Visual Arts Bursaries 2009

Thomas Devlin, aged 15 years, was murdered in an unprovoked attack some 200 metres from his home as he was returning from buying sweets with some friends on 10th August 2005 in North Belfast.   His family would like Thomas’s death to be a catalyst for young people to acknowledge and appreciate the futility of gratuitous violence against young people, and to this end have set up a Fund in his name, managed by the Community Foundation for Northern Ireland.  The Thomas Devlin Fund promotes public awareness about the effects and impact of the type of violent attack from which Thomas met his death, and supports activities specifically targeted at young people and focused on the arts and music.

Last year the Thomas Devlin Fund awarded bursaries to 8 young people with performing arts interest.  This year the Trustees have decided to continue with a bursary scheme and to offer bursaries of up to £1500 to young people between the age of 15 and 19 in order to pursue a career or study in visual arts.

Applicants should demonstrate:

Need for financial assistance / prospect for development of their potential / how the award will make a difference to the individual and to others in their community

Click here for a copy of the application form.

The application form should be completed by the student and their teacher / tutor, and submitted on behalf of the applicant by their teacher / tutor.

Applications should be returned to the Community Foundation for Northern Ireland by 29th May 2009

Equality 2025

Equality 2025’s second regional meeting is taking place in Northern Ireland at the City Hotel, Derry.   Equality 2025 was set up in 2006 to make sure that disabled people’s voices are heard when the Westminster government decides anything that affects disabled people’s lives.  Many decision’s taken in Westminster will continue to affect disabled people with disabilities in Northern Ireland.  These include decisions on Welfare Reform, Criminal Justice and the UN Convention.

We want you to tell us what we should be telling government about these issues as well as any others that affect you.  Your chance to do that is on 14th May 2009.  We invite you to apply for one of the 50 places at that meeting.  An application form is enclosed and must reach us by Friday May 1st.

The meeting will be at 10am until 3pm. Light refreshments and lunch will also be provided.  Limited travelling expenses are available for those who would not be able to attend otherwise.  Claims for expenses must be agreed in advance.

If you are a member of any disability group or have disabled friends or family, please tell them about this meeting and encourage them to apply to come. Places are limited but even if you cannot come, we want to know your views.  It is important that as many disabled people as possible tell us what matters to them, so that we can make sure that we advise the government about what disabled people really think.

Our contact details are on the application form. However if you wish, you can e-mail me directly with your details and any access or dietary requirements.  The e-mail address is gary@equality2025.org or ni@equality2025.org.  We look forward to seeing you, either at this meeting or at some point in the future.

Street Theatre Performances

On the 1st and 2nd of May, 2009 Children in Crossfire and DesertFish Productions will be producing street theatre performances in various prominent locations throughout L/Derry as part of Community Relations Week. The theatre pieces developed are based upon workshops that explore the real experiences of people living in a diverse and sometimes divided city. From the experiences explored we will develop a forum play that will allow space for audience members to improve and better develop any community issues they may have. A forum piece can allow people from diverse communities to think about, see and rehearse options for living together constructively. Similarly, the street theatre will take a debate into the community. It will be a chance for all citizens to engage in a debate as to how to improve community relations in their city. Helen Henderson of Children in Crossfire says, “This is a great opportunity to engage the general public about issues of discrimination that affect us all.”

If you are interested in enjoying some theatre, the performances will be from 3:00pm to 6:00pm on Friday, 1 May, and 12:00pm to 6:00pm on Saturday, 2 May.  Contact Caroline Murphy for more information at  02871278948 or grainne@childrenincrossfire.org
